As they start to rebuild, I hope these areas change some of their local laws to force developers to put some protection in. Building on sand bars, in front of dunes, etc shouldn't happen. The newer homes meet the codes for cat 3 or 4, some for storm surge, etc but it only does so much when the ocean is now on the land.

The sad thing is a lot of people don't have flood insurance in Florida. Either due to cost or thinking they're in areas that won't get hit. So by the time you get insurance money it's a fraction.

It's gotten a lot better with flood zones and forcing you to have it now. Anyone in the 100 year zones has to have it.

Things like that building need to be changed but a lot of the buildings in these areas are old. It costs a ton to meet all the new requirements so they just want to keep the old buildings. Hopefully they stop building so close to the water without proper sea walls and dunes.

I've got family in the area hit and 1 had water in the house, so guessing it's totaled and has to be gutted. Another one lives not far away but 10ft or so higher and had no damage or water.

That's bizarre to me, even here in PA we require flood insurance for anyone in a flood zone before we'll give a mortgage.

It may be (I don't know) similar to what happened here in Houston during Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Many homes that were not in the 100-year Floodplain (thus not required to have flood insurance) flooded.

Re: So what's the weather like where you live?

Remember on some shows/movies when they depict any sort of dark/scary moment or even just Halloween, how the weather is cloudy and streets are really foggy and all that?

That's what happened most of this week! I can't even remember it happening around here to this level even multiple times in a year, let alone a week!

Halloween week, it sure adds to the Halloween vibe...except it happened every day this week EXCEPT Halloween! You can't make this up.

It is snowing today and all weekend. Earliest we've had snow in around 10 or so years.
