Try and learn "Satellite" and if you can pick that you'll be good for most anything.

Re: The OS Guitarists thread

I've had a red sunburst Fender Stratocaster since August 2006; along with that I have a Vox Valvetronix 30 watt amp and some doohickey for my computer called a Line6 TonePort, which effectively lets me use my computer as an amp / effects bridge / etc.

I've sort of hit a plateau recently in terms of playing skills, but I love playing songs like Muse "Hysteria" and AC/DC "Thunderstruck"; admittedly not the hardest riffs to learn as they're mainly all hammer-ons and pull-offs, but they can be difficult to play cleanly and it took me a fair amount of time to not be so sloppy with them. I've got a good number of the more commonly-used open chords down and have been slowly picking up more barre chords over time, though given my reluctance to look at tablature and/or take lessons this will probably happen gradually.

If I ever get time I'm going to figure out how to use my TonePort to record audio to my computer and lay down some stuff, combine it with some drum and bass tracks that I can sequence using Propellorhead's Reason 4 (great program for audio sequencing, IMO, if expensive), and maybe write an original song or two.

Jeff Beck stuff would definatly help your finger picking. Eric Johnson has a finger picking lesson on youtube too.

I'd actually like to sell my amp. It's great for studio work, and since I was using my guitar to add a live guitar track over my beats the effects on my amp and amp models were great. However, w/ my E-MU soundcard I can layer the effects that way much better.

I'd rather have a nice Fender amp w/ a simple clean/distortion switch, and add a crybaby wah and a Boss Delay to go w/ my Boss tremolo and flange setup.
I have a Vox Valvetronix 30 Watt with a Line 6 Pod X3 Live for effects and a Squier Strat for guitar. I started really cheap and upgraded everythinge except guitar for now.

Hysteria is really fun to play. How much is that reason 4 program? I really want some drumtracks.

And also does anyone know how good the Schecter Hellraisers are? I'm looking to upgrade to one of those soon.

Re: The OS Guitarists thread

Thanks for all the help, fellas.

My setup: Currently playing with my 85 Charvel--active pickups. I also have an acoustic and a BC Rich 7 String Beast.

I'm playing through Logic on my laptop, using an M-Audio interface, but these days I'm mostly practicing unplugged.

Anyone have any tracks recorded that we can hear?

It's probably not the best way to learn but it worked for me because it kept me interested. I have a short attention span so just playing chords alone would lose me fast.

Give it a try, its a blast.

(Acoustic Guitar by the way)
This is what I'm doing right now actually, with an accoustic as well. I'm having a blast so far although I don't have a ton of time to play...especially in the summer.

Anyone want to recommend any good, somewhat beginner accoustic songs to learn?? I have a hard time deciding on songs, especially ones that I can play...

It'll run you $400 easily, $500 at Propellerhead's website (www.propellerheads.se). It can be had for less if you look for it beyond places like Guitar Center, though.

It looks like the same company is also soon releasing a program called Record, which appears to combine the functionality of Reason, Line6 Gearbox (software that comes with the Toneport thing I have to modify/distort sound from guitar before speaker output; I think amp modeling is the term for what it technically does), and also some sort of program for capturing the audio played through Gearbox (Gearbox doesn't capture audio natively, so far as I know).

Re: The OS Guitarists thread

Heh, I recorded an album when I was 16 but I don't really want to post it because my puberty-stricken singing voice (and me being forced to sing because our female bassist's voice was too delicate for most blues/rock stuff) ruins it for me. I do have one where she was singing, so here's that: 02 Tin Pan alley.mp3 - 8.18MB

It's a cover of "Tin Pan Alley" and I think it's the best song on the album simply because I'm not singing on it haha... And the guitar work isn't bad for a 16 year-old kid, though I go on YouTube and see these kids that straight-up put me to shame, even today.

My main guitar is a Fender Roadhouse Strat (think it's a 1998, can't remember), but I also play my jazz guitar a lot, which is a DeArmond (forgot the model name.. jeez I suck at guitar nerd talk these days).

Here's me playing the jazz box:

Main Strat:

First Strat (1997-98 Mexican Strat w/ swapped out pickguard):

My Dad's 1972 "Josh Model" Dobro, which I really need to play more:

I just checked some of the reviews on amazon. It seems pretty sweet. Is there anyway that you can set up so that you can get effects through the computer and still have the sound come out of an amp?
