Re: The OS Guitarists thread
Thanks anyway. I'm going to look around online for some ways to do that. That's the only reason I haven't gotten any direct recording software yet. I want to hear what I'm playing while i'm doing it so that if it sounds like crap I can just cut it first and my speakers for my computer aren't well suited for a guitar blazing through them.Comment

Re: The OS Guitarists thread
does anybody have any advice for a really good cheap or free recording software or device? Right now I use Sony Acid Music studios and that is just acoustic and singing but the sound quality is really quiet and badComment

By no means am I playing shows or anything like that; just a hobby I have on the side while I get my CS degree
While I haven't recorded anything per se, I have written and sequenced music for homebrew video games using Reason 4. Turned out pretty well and I suppose I could post it here to give an example of what a relative novice can do with Reason 4 can put together using only point-and-click editing (the program's meant for using with a MIDI keyboard, but it's not needed to get use out of it).Comment

Re: The OS Guitarists thread
Man, I love music. My favorite bands are Rise Against, Funeral for a Friend, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, and Strung Out, among others. So I'm in to that post-hardcore and punk-rock type of stuff.
Problem is, I never got into actually playing music. Outside of the standard issue recorder they made us play hot-cross-sponge on in like 3rd grade, I haven't touched a real instrument.
Recently, the fire of wanting to play music has gotten hotter. I recently decided that in the near future, I'm going to invest in an electric guitar and start playing music. The idea is to do it for my own enjoyment and to show family and friends, but if it takes me places, I'm all for that too.
The problem is I don't know anything about it. I've read this thread and don't know any of the terms, what's a good beginning guitar (affordable, but not a cheapo that won't be worth it), or pretty much how anything works. I'm completely clueless.
So that's where you guys come in. Advice, links to websites, anything to help me get started on playing an electric guitar. It will all be appreciated very much!NHL - Philadelphia Flyers

MLB - Cincinnati Reds

Those are some pretty good sites.
For beginner guitars, if you want to buy new, the Yamaha Pacificas and Agile brand guitars are pretty good. Stay away from First Act beginner guitars. But personally, I would checkout ebay and pawn shops to find used gear. You might be able to find a Jackson, ESP, LTD, Ibanez, for cheap which will suit your style better than a Pacifica. I got a Schecter C1FR for 180 bucks on ebay, and it was only 4 months old and in near perfect condition. You can find some pretty killer deals now with our crap economy and everyone having to get rid of stuff to pay bills. Just don't get anything from China on ebay. There are a lot of counterfeit guitars coming out of there so it might not be safe.Comment

Re: The OS Guitarists thread
I picked up my guitar (Just a $300 Ibanez) for the first time in a long time the other night. I'd forgotten how much strings hurt when you're fingers aren't used to them.
Felt great to play even if the guitar sounded horrible and I wanted to chop my fingers off afterwords.Comment

Re: The OS Guitarists thread
I've been playing an acoustic lately. I never played it much, mostly sticking to electric, but my chord work is cleaning up as a result of it. I really like the sound dynamics you can apply to an acoustic guitar. If I remain steady on it for a few more weeks, I'll intensify the playing to full out practice. My finger picking is not even developed enough to call crap, haha.Comment

Re: The OS Guitarists thread
I'd go for the amp. I'm not sure what most recommend but I'm upgrading my guitar last. I currently have a vox valvetronix amp. And a squier strat for a guitar. I will be upgrading to a shecter hellraiser before the year is over though. And as stumble said depending on your style it might be better to get some effects too first. I got a line 6 pod x3 live for my effects and it does great for what i do. It also has amp modeling so you can also get an okay tube amp sound out of it using that.Last edited by RAZRr1275; 07-16-2009, 07:09 PM.My latest project - Madden 12 http://www.operationsports.com/forum...post2043231648Comment

Re: The OS Guitarists thread
Amp, easily. A crappy guitar would sound decent out of a good amp, but not vice-versa. I always suggest tube amps, but unless you're serious about playing, it's probably not worth a $450 investment or so to get an amp. I liked the Fender Blues Junior a lot when I used one a while back and those can be found used for ~$300... solid not-too-loud practice-type amp, but it still has nice Fender tube sound.
Depends what kind of music you like though if a tube amp is worth it or not. If you're playing chords, modern rock, etc., then you might just go solid state and get a decent effects processor to give you some sounds to play with. Tube amps are mostly if you want a really nice clean sound and a typical overdrive (think Stevie Ray Vaughan or something)...Send your Midnight Release weirdo pics/videos to my new website: http://www.peopleofmidnightreleases.com!Comment
