Gaming after the wife goes to sleep?

I always see guys saying they get some game time in "After the wife goes to bed". I work 7:30am to 5pm. I get home around 5:15pm and then normally get in a game around 6pm then by 7pm I am set to go watch some TV with the lady. Then go to bed around 10 to 10:30 for work the next day.

I see people always saying they going to get a game in once the wife goes to bed. My question is, does your lady complain about you not going to bed with her? I have tried this routine in the past and her thing she always brings up is "I sleep better when you in bed next to me" or "You wake me up when you come to bed later than me".

I would rather this route of gaming once she goes to bed. It would give me time to do stuff around the house while it is still day light and then spend some time with her before she goes to bed. THEN I could get in a game or two before bed.

Just wondering how your wives/girlfriends feel about you doing this and how did you warm them up to the idea if you had to?

After 5 yrs of marriage I've worn her down.

She doesn't put up a fight, knows I'll stay up however late I want, go to sleep early when needed, etc. We still get plenty of time together once our little one goes down. I lend my ear when she wants to talk about life happenings, we watch Parks & Rec, The Office, Jersey Shore, and I've got her watching this season of Hard Knocks too.

What's funny was she would have no problem if I stayed up late watching Monday Night Football or Sunday Night Football, but if I was going to play a game of Madden, NCAA, etc oh no...bitchfest...I once asked what is the difference between the two, to which I got no logical answer, and things slowly started to simmer down after that.

With my wife being a teacher she also sets her own bedtime at like 10pm during the schoolyear. There's no way I'm going to bed that early 5 nights a week. Maybe a couple nights I'll be tired from taking the son to the playground after work, going for a jog, or staying up late the night before...but I'm 29 and set my own bedtime.

It annoys my wife but well with a kid and spending time with her there is no other time to play.

Re: Gaming after the wife goes to sleep?

Well for me, I have two 360's. I would actually just do some gaming from bed. My ex learned to deal with the noise and button mashing. Didnt really work for the times you are trying to play a friend with a mic on or the times you are playing a game where laying in bed just doesnt cut it (the shine in UFC).

On top of that I always went to bed later than my ex so I was always getting up out of bed to grab a snack or have a little session (you know what Im talking about, we share the same habit). Shes was used to me moving around so that part wasnt an issue. She used the whole "I sleep better when you around" on me too but If I was in there gaming she was fine. For the most part as long as I was in there when she went to sleep she didnt mind me going back to my room to game since I would always make one last visit to my room before bed anyway.

For me, I got her to accept it because she realized she was no longer waiting on me to be done so she could go to bed and because she realized I was more productive in general. Even when I was gaming in the other room when she was going to bed I would just remind her we were more productive during the day so that was enough. If it wasnt I would just spend another 15 mins watching TV to shut her up..... Shes an Ex for a reason.

I would not say mine "bitches". More like she complains I am going to wake her up or she sleeps better with me next to her. So it is more a sympathy play on her part I think. Now I still stay up I say at least once a week and she don't say to much. But I would like to flip flop my gaming time I am doing now to after she is sleeping. But I know this will be a issue. Granted we have been together going on 6 years so you would think this would not be such a problem. But women can make things more complicated than it should be.

Re: Gaming after the wife goes to sleep?

My wife has no problems with me playing games after she goes to bed. Like another poster, she is a teacher and is usually in bed by 10 p.m. Unless I'm extremely tired, there's just no way I could make myself go to sleep at that time; I'd end up staring at the ceiling half the night. So, I hang out in the living room and either play some video games or watch a TV show or movie and then make my way to the bedroom an hour or two later.

My wife liked to classify the time spent sleeping together as time "spent together". Because she saw it this way for such a long time it made playing a video game at night increasingly hard. Spending time together via the rationale mind would be awake, conscious, etc. Not sleeping...

I think we are at an interesting point. If you think about it there is no precedent for marriage in this day and time. Meaning w/ the advent of technology & entertainment the way it is today there is far more to distract us from our marriages.

Our fathers didn't play video games, at least not many of them, and a lot of our wives probably saw their mom and dad go to bed at the same time after watching the late show or one of their programs (Picket Fences, NYPD Blue, etc.).

Today we don't have to watch TV at the networks scheduled time, and a lot of us would rather play a video game. How we interact in our marriages will be the design that our kids go by.

Think about it. Instead of "Going out w/ the fellas" we're at home, in our basements or living rooms, playing a video game while our wives get a headstart on their winks, and they're still complaining.

                Solution: work 3rd shift.

Right now I'm playing some NCAA, she's at work. We don't live together but it's in the cards for the future.

I work when she sleeps so it's awesome. There is NO WAY I'd like a 9-5 with how I have things now.

Great view point JB and it makes a ton of sense. For instance, I am NOT a TV person. I ONLY watch TV because like you said, "she wants to spend time together". When she is out of town, my TV won't turn on. She went out of town this past weekend and literally my TV did not turn on from Friday to Sunday when she got back. I have a man cave in the back the house so I just hung out there and played some PC and 360.

I enjoyed reading your take on it, I agree with you.

Well, I don't get home from work until 10:30 PM (swing shift sucks) so I always get my gaming time in late at night.

My wife would prefer that I go to bed with her but she understands that I work late and need to wind down.

Re: Gaming after the wife goes to sleep?

My wife don't care. She is a night owl though so usual she is still up unless she has an early meeting to go to or something. Other then that, we both normally don't fall asleep until 3am anyway.

But at the times when she has to go to bed at midnight she just goes to bed and don't care if I play my game all night. Hell I can play my game when ever I want to actually.

About the only times we watch tv together at a set time is on wednesday and friday nights. Wednesday nights we watch Ghost Hunters and Ghost Hunters International.
Friday nights it is Euereka and Haven.

The other days she watches her shows by herself in the office like The Bachelorette, Boston Med, Shaq VS, Hoarders, etc. I don't watch that crap.

Re: Gaming after the wife goes to sleep?

I hardly ever game right when I get home from work. It's always the gym/ball/cook dinner so all my gaming comes a little later.

We have shows that we watch together but a lot of times she will end up falling asleep on them so I just play my game and watch them while she sleeps. She'll ask me the next day if I watched them and get upset that I did.

Right now I'm sure she is hating NCAA, lol. A week or so ago she said "you sure have been playing that game a lot". I just said "yup". In the past I would have said something smart but I pick my battles and move on these days.

I have in the past done the whole gaming after working out, time with her, dinner, etc. Then I heard "You have not come to bed with me in forever."

I am hoping if I can pull this off couple times a week it will just turn into standard everyday routine and not be a big deal.

As long as it's not every night, my wife doesn't mind too much. I hardly ever get to play right after work unless my wire won't be home until late or she is busy and my daughter isn't with us.

I'm pretty lucky in this sense, my wife will just come in the gaming room when she gets sleepy and fall asleep on the couch (she is a HEAVY sleeper), I just wake her when I'm getting ready to go to bed and it's all good.
