Bama recruiting assessment 2019
It's coach MauricXe's second year at The University of Alabama. The tide will graduate 13 or so seniors, and probably a few underclassmen, so their class was a bit smaller when compared to last year's top class. However, the coaching staff believes this might be their best class. The coaching staff needed a new quarterback, and a halfback on offense. They also needed a quite a few pieces on defense. For the most part, these concerns were met with top quality recruits. The coaching staff tells us that working without 'insta-commit' has been manageable albeit they have had to make a few recruiting sacrifices. It's tough not being able to sign some of the kids you want, especially if you have the inside track, or choosing which kids to chase early and which ones to let go. Setting priorities is key.
Offense
At quarterback, the crimson tide enlisted (81ovr) five-star athlete Maurice Blalock from Alabama. He's got a laser arm (90 throw power), decent accuracy (81) and decent speed to boot (88/84).
At tailback, the tide picked up four-star (80ovr) gem prospect Josh Franklin out of Texas. This speedster has 95 speed and 97 accr. The coaching staff isn't sure if he will take a redshirt next year or if he will see immediate playing time. he is good enough to start but there are a few upperclassmen that can play.
On the offensive line, the Tide picked up three offensive linemen. The biggest pickup was gem prospect 306 pound Jamal Cox at left guard. The coaching staff have an eye for talent...this kid was only rated 74ovr and graded out at 82ovr. 303 pounder John Collins from Alabama, rated 75 ovr graded out at 80ovr. He will start at right guard in the coming years.
Three-star gem recruit Luis Cabral from New York rounds out the offensive line at 299 pounds. He was rated 68ovr but graded out at 78 overall. The offensive line haul over the past two years will provide quality depth for the Tide as they chase championships.
Wide Receiver haul was less than stellar. The Tide are going to focus on developing their speedy receiving haul from last year. They did pick up a five-star wide receiver out of Arkansas in Joey Salyer. He is an average balanced receiver that is expected to provide depth and contribute in his later years.
The Tide had no needs at TE or FB. They already secured the #1 and #2 tight end from last year. They have 3 full backs on scholarship one of which is a converted Tight End.
Overall the coaching staff is very very pleased with their offensive haul. They addressed all of their needs.
Defense
The defensive line recruiting this year was a homerun. The tide coaching staff picked up 4 defensive line commitments. All of them are defensive ends, but two of them are big enough to play on the inside.
(81ovr) five-star Damon Johnson out of California will move inside
(81ovr) five-star Micah Merrick out of TSUN will be a SSDE
(80ovr) four-star Devon Hogan out of Miss. will play RE
(79ovr) four-star Cornelius Wilsonout of Texas will move inside
Combined with last year's class, the tide will have a strong two deep
Linebacker will be a bit thin due to graduation in the coming years. The coaching staff secured (81ovr) Markell Wheeler out of california and (79ovr) five-star Matt Johnson out of Ohio to play OLB. both of these guys are FAST and have great cover skills.
At middle linebacker, #1 ovr (81ovr) Jason Webb out of PA will roam the middle of the field. he isn't the fasted guy on the field but he is probably the best tackler. That will compliment the speedy linebackers on the outside that have average tackling. His block shedding is better than many defensive linemen.
It's no secret that the tide have a poor secondary. outside of Thorpe finalist Sharp, the secondary has been torched all season with their jekyll and hyde performances. it cost them a title last year. The coaching staff signed (78ovr) Edgar Lawrence out of TN. He is a speedy corner with good instincts. With last year's recruitment, that makes 3 good corners for the coaching staff to develop. The secondary losses 3 starters this year so the underclassmen need to perform immediately. The coaching staff is battling for another five-star corner.
At strong safety, (81ovr) 6-5 four-star gem prospect Andre Young out of Alabama signed with his childhood team. This kid can tackle and hit. expect to see him cause havoc.
At full safety, we have (76ovr) 3 star-gem Travis Thomas from Arizona and (78ovr) athlete Jim Brooks out of LA. 6-4 Thomas has exceptional speed for his position and Jim Brooks is a well rounded cover specialist. Brooks may slide over to corner, SS, or even QB in certain situations if not permanently.
Coach MauricXe is very happy with his haul. The number of 80ovr kids + redshirts will pay dividends down the road. Their elite talent will be young next year.
On offense, they didn't pick up a blazing fast wide receiver but the coaching staff expects that to be addressed in the coming years through development. They might pick up a power back next year, and another QB to play backup.
On defense, they are disappointed they haven't secured another CB. Having insta commit would have helped. They are in a battle for one atm so it might be all sunny skies in the future. The secondary is a work in progress but with the safeties, corners, and even the linebackers recruited this year, coverage should improve dramatically in the next couple of years.
