Miami enters the new season optimistic after finishing a 10-3 season under Al Golden. Each of the Canes losses last season came to top 10 teams and were all 7 points or less. This is a different team but the coaches and fans like the direction of the program.
Miami's offense will have a new feel this year for several reasons. The biggest change will be the new playbook and spread offense which is not what Golden prefers to run but with the offensive line being one of the worst in the country, Golden hopes the spread will cover that weakness.
The QB position will be split between true freshmen David Richard and Rodney Houston. Golden admits that Houston will likely be the Canes future QB but Richard who was a 4 star athlete will be used in another attempt to help with the terrible offensive line. The Canes running game will go through JR John Hunt and FR Travis Wade. Wade is the more explosive of the 2 but Hunt will get the bulk of the carries. The WR core will look similar to last years but a little faster overall. All American JR Mike Ross returns as the leading reciever and return man with former CB Chris Freeman and Juco transfer Shelton Godfrey as the other primary recievers. Golden says this offense can go as far as the OL will let them.
The Miami defense should be strong again this year even after losing 8 starters. The DL will be led by SR DE Josh Reid who finished with 11 sacks last season. The linebacking core will be a good again with SRs Thomas Jordan and William Daniel getting most of action. The Canes lost 2 amazing safeties last year who will need to be replaced. Those spots will be rotated between returners Reggie Williams and Ben Reid and standout FR Jordan Smith and Danny Scruggs. Reid is who the coaches are most excited about with a 6'5 228 lb frame. CB will be the strength of the team with All American CB Sean Hollis and SR Freddie Wright on the outsides. Hollis who had 8 interceptions last season switched his number to 1 and wants to prove again that he is the best CB in the nation.
