Pro Yakyu Spirits - Superstar/Interesting Players

As you can see I am really bored at work. But the purpose of this particular thread is to introduce you to some of the baseball superstars in Japan/in this game, tell you why they are good, and what are the special skills they have. I hope this will make the game more fun since I am guessing most of you have no idea who all these Japanese players are.

Also, if there particular players you like to use or you think are cool and want to know more about, please say so. Again, feel free to post some screenshots of the players and we can tell you their special skills or what not!

3 threads in 10 mins? LOL

I like the idea of this thread though. Knowing the real life strengths of npb players will definitely help me enjoy this series more. You should post your some of your own favourite players!

This is an awesome idea. I'd love to hear about the strenghs and weaknesses of the players in the japanese league and in the game. Then we know what to look for when we play the game.

If you do a team by team thing, it'd be nice to have a list of the first and last names of the players in english. Like #19, the pitcher, on the Marines is Karakara, etc. I'm sure there is an english list of this somewhere, but I don't know where to look. Maybe just an english list of players to match the default rosters of PYS 2010 by jersey number. Of course there are english names on the back of players jerseys in the game, but it'd be nice to have an english list by player number so we know who is who when scrolling through the rosters.

          Hanshin Tigers
          <O</O

I will start off with the Tigers. They are probably the 2nd most popular team behind the Yomiuri Giants.
          <O</O
          <O</O
          Default Line-up (Name - Uniform - Position):
          <O</O
          <O</O
          1. Murton - #9 - CF<O</O
          2. Hirano - #5 - 2B<O</O
          3. Toritani - #1 - SS<O</O
          4. Kanemoto - #6 - LF<O</O
          5. Arai - #25 - 3B<O</O
          6. Johjima - #2 - C<O</O
          7. Brazell - #67 - 1B<O</O
          8. Sakurai - #51 - RF<O</O
          9. Pitcher
          <O</O
          <O</O
MLB fans are most likely familiar with Murton and Johjima. <O</O
          <O</O

Murton is hitting great in Japan, .385 and 4 homeruns at the moment, and he received a nice offensive upgrade in the first roster update patch from Konami on April 26. he has C for contact now and better power so def donwload the patch if ur a hanshin fan.<O</O
          <O</O

Johjima has the "Power hitter" skill in the game meaning if you place a power swing perfectly you will most likely go yard. He also has the "Pull" hitter skill meaning he is an extreme pull hitter. <O</O

Kanemoto has the Iron Man skill (sorry, Iron Man is the Power Pro name...in this game it is just Injury Protection +3) meaning he will most likely never be injured in Pennat since he had a world record iron man streak going (even longer than Cal Ripken). The streak finally ended after this thread jinxed him (jk). He decided to sit out ysterday (APril 18), ending the consecutive, all-innings, all games played streak at 1,492. He also has the "Line Drive" special skill meaning his hits will always be lower arching, line-drive type homerun, etc.

<O</OFirst baseman Brazell has very high power rating. He is one of the few hitters in the game with the 7 arc, meaning he will hit balls very very high producing lots of HIGH flyouts, pop ups, and homeruns. <O</O
          <O</O

          Bench players to watch:<O</O
          <O</O
          - Sekimoto (#3, 2B) - you can use him as your 2B in a platoon when you face a left handed pitcher<O</O
          - Katsuragi (#33, OF/1B) - he is often used in late game situations as a defensive 1B in real life<O</O
          <O</O

          Pitching Staff:
          <O</O
          <O</O
This team doesn't really have a good starting staff. No one can be considered an ace but obviously if you look at the attributes, Nohmi (#14) is your best starter.
          <O</O
          <O</O
The superstar of the pitching staff is Closer - Fujikawa (#22). His fastball is the best in the entire game and he has a unique special skills called "the Fire Ball". Let's just say this makes his fastball really powerful and unhittable.<O</O
          <O</O

That's all for now, may come back and add more later. <O</O

Murton is hitting great in Japan, .385 and 4 homeruns at the moment, so I am betting he will get a stat boost when Konami gives PS3 users a roster update (in middle season i guess) as he is kinda weak in the game right now.

I beg to differ (no offense) but the Tigers have a solid set of SP's .....Maybe they lack a Darvsh, Wakui, Iwakuma or Tanaka...But all around they have a solid and durable rotation worthy of notice......and while Nohmi might be the most popular....I this Iwata is the ace (imho)
            MLB: Chicago Cubs
            NPB: Yokohama BayStars

as a pretty hardcore tigers fan who watch about 100-120 of their games a year i cant disagree more. no offense but i think if you tell a hardcore tigers fan their rotation is solid and worthy of notice they will laugh you out of the room. the staff is very very average, workable and usable, not definitely nothing special and hardly worthy of notice. sitting througg an andoh start should be considered inhumane punishment. he cant even get baystars out for gods sakes. and the thing that really jumps out at you when you watch the tigers starters in real life is, they got no stuff. and the game totally confirms my suspicion. you look at every other rotation in the game and you see lots of C and B and A for stuff. you look at the tigers...all their games have D fastballs, E sliders, etc etc. they are just really really average.

Awesome. Oh and do hawks as well because I've been using them in my pys6 pennant (chose them because I like their logo lol).

But yeah man, no rush. Do them when ever you feel like it, really appreciate it

                      Softbank Hawks

They have a bit of everything – a really good ace, some great bullpen guys, dynamic high speed 1-2 hitters, some aging sluggers, and so on. Overall I think they are a very fun choice for season mode (I am also using the Hawks myself in pennant) and this post will be REALLY LONG since, well, I like using them!
                      <O</O
                      Default Line-up
                      <O</O

                      1. Honda – #46 – 2B
                      2. Kawasaki – #52 - SS
                      3. Ortiz – #49 – LF
                      4. Kokubo – #9 – 1B
                      5. Matsunaka – #3 – DH
                      6. Tamura – #6 – CF
                      7. Hasegawa – #30 – RF
                      8. Tanoue - #70 – C
                      9. Matsuda – #5 – 3B

Notable hitters:<O</O<O</OKawada is hitting lead-off in real life and Honda 2nd, so swap them in your game too if you want. They are very similar players with the same great speed and gold glove calibur defense at their respective position. <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<ST1Kawasaki</ST1</st1:City> is better at contact and good at stealing (Steal + 1), but Honda is better at chance hitting and has an even better base stealing skill (Steal +2). Just to give you an idea of their style, <st1:City w:st="on"><ST1Kawasaki</ST1</st1:City> had 44 SB in 2009 and Honda had 43. They both have the opposite field contact skill so use the O button and enjoy all your singles into left field. <st1:City w:st="on"><ST1Kawasaki </st1:City>idolizes Ichiro and they have become good friends/teacher-student. They train together every spring in <st1:country-region w:st="on">Japan</st1:country-region> and <st1:City w:st="on"><ST1his </st1:City>jersey number 52 is also a tribute to Ichiro’s 51 as he wants to follow in Ichiro’s footstep. If you see some Ichiro-like follow throughs and animation from <ST1Kawasaki in PYS 2010, now you know why!
                      <O</O
Kokubo is pretty good guy for RBIs. He has the arch ability (which allows the hitter the hit high flyballs that stays in the air longer) for hitting homeruns, Chance +1, and also the skill Strong Presence which causes pitchers to suffer a drop in abilities when facing Kokubo in a chance situation.
                      <O</O
Matsunaka is sorta like Japan's <ST1David Ortiz. He was the most feared hitter in the country just a few years ago but has dramatically declined due to injuries and age. He actually won the Triple Crown in 2004 (leading the league in HR/AVG/RBI) hitting .358, 44 HR, and 120 RBI but you probably can’t tell looking at his in-game ratings. He has the Pull ability and the Arch ability and even a unique defensive shift called the Matsunaka Shift against him since he pulls so much. He may also the slowest guy in the entire game with a G speed.
                      <O</O
Hasegawa was a breakout young player from last season and he is rewarded with high contact and the Average Hitter ability in this year’s game, meaning his hits will more easily become solid line-drives. However his defense in right is only a E so he might cause you a few runs on defense.
                      <O</O
Finally Tanoue, the most powerful #8 hitter in the whole game. He is the only guy with the pure Power Hitter skill in the lineup but his meet is pretty weak and also his defense at Catcher is below average.
                      <O</O

                      Pitching Staff <O</O
                      <O</O

Ace #47 Sugiuchi is a beast. Oh he is so fun to use. His fastball, change-up, and curve/slurve pitch are all top pitches. You can attack in the strike zone with the fastball, then throw intentional balls below the strike zone with the change and slurve and the CPU, even on Hard+ or perfect, will chase all day long and embarrass themselves. This guy is basically an automatic 10 strike-outs complete game shut-out possibility every game. SO MUCH FUN TO USE. PS – he is also this damn good in real life
                      <O</O
As for the other guys, Holton is rated very highly in this year’s game so he is a clear #<st1:chmetcnv w:st="on" UnitName="in" SourceValue="2" HasSpace="True" Negative="False" NumberType="1" TCSC="0">2 in</st1:chmetcnv> the rotation. But after him the other starters are really hit and miss. I really suggest dumping 1 of the #5 or #6 starter and bring up #17 Ohba from the minor league. He has much greater potential than either guy when you awaken him. Also hidden away in the minor league roster is #66 Saitoh. He used to be one of <st1:country-region w:st="on"><ST1Japan's</st1:country-region> best pitchers from 2002-07 but injures have pretty much destroyed him and he hasn’t pitched in 2 years. If you have the patience to awake him 2 times or Max(which will take quite a long time in season mode; probably easier if you just buy the upgrades in VP shop, edit him into your team, then start the season with the edited team) his abilities will go back to respectable but still not quite close to his prime-days.
                      <O</O
                      Bullpen
a triple threat in the bullpen, all with great stuff:
                      <O</O
#50 Settsu – the real life 2009 Rookie of the Year. He has 3 great pitches all rated C as well as good skills like Pinch +1. If you don’t care about realism, just make him your closer in your game and never worry about blowing a save again.
                      <O</O
#25 Falkenborg – set-up man in real life. His A-rated fastball and his unbelievable curveball really stand out in my mind but he also has a good forkball as a third pitch. Another near unhittable guy and closer candidate if you don’t care about mimicking real life.
                      <O</O
#14 Mahara – He is the closer in real life but in-game he is not as good as either Settsu or Falkenborg. His fastball is still above average at C and his forkball is B with huge break but the other 2 guys have so much more quality options that Mahara doesn’t have. The developers also gave him some skills that a closer would not want such as Easily Rattled, inconsistent fastball speed, and Quick – 1 (meaning a longer stride allowing easier steals).

                      that's all for now

Weeknight games are usually at 6pm japan time, while weekend games usually around 1pm.

There are live streams on justin tv. I'm in australia so the time difference is only an hour which is great for me. If you're in the US however, weeknight games are probably very late at night or early morning depending on your location. If you're interested i'll post some links when i get home tonight.
