I don't think you're looking strictly at comparisons to the foundation. Foundation is all you can really legitimately compare here because they are both the first football games from both companies of this generation... that's where your foundation is laid... on the first game.

Re: Which do you think is better: Madden 06 or Backbreaker?
I'm not missing the point at all, it's clear it's an argument slanted in Backbreakers favor, and everyone who disagrees apparently is negative to be negative, or a troll, or a Madden fanboy according to the BB faithful, which is why all the threads get closed so quickly in the BB forum... proponents keep trying to hold it up to things they (often wrongly) feel are inferior to try and promote or reinforce their purchase/support.
Backbreaker has the most shallow franchise mode of any football game ever created (and possibly any sports game that has a 'multiple season mode'), even more so than the gutted Madden 10 online franchise. Even if the on the field experience was superior (which it isn't as, evidinced by the impressions thread and the near unanimous reviews this far), it isn't in the same league as pretty much any 3D football game created. Like I said agree to disagree, Madden 06 was feature-stripped, but the game still represented football pretty well than the arcade version of Sundays that Backbreaker represents, huge player models and exaggerated stadiums and all. Things you'll find in Madden 06 though are the basics like Fatigue, Injuries, hot routes, defensive adjustments, trades and free agency. It was football, and it's pretty clear Natural Motion needed to hire a few more football people, as things like the driving team fumbling the ball into their own endzone 4 times in a single game and the game does 3 different things (touchback, 1st down fumbling team... 1st and down on the 1 for the non fumbling team... and a safety, what should have happened all 4 times). I wonder how their replay system compared, or has there ever been a more restrictive replay system in any sports game? Good thing that the hits and player interactions aren't the emphasis in this game. Oh wait they are? Just exacerbates that mistake. Again, the comparison is absurd and setup to just try and promote BB and dump on Madden, and even in this comparison Backbreaker falls horribly short, even as a game with the benefit of being created by the developers of the magical Euphoria, as it's clear there are many problems with even that and it needs some help (the weight issue, and many quirks like players doing the splits, falling down too easy, etc). |

For fun factor (which should be the reason to play the game), I pick BB hands down. I haven't had fun with a Madden game since 1993.

Re: Which do you think is better: Madden 06 or Backbreaker?
Anyway, the thread title is a comparison of a 1st title, Madden 06, to another first title, BackBreaker. You've bringing up Madden 10, that's way off base, and that's part of why I say you're missing the point here. You can't compare a first title's completeness to a 5th title. Contrary to what the average gamer may believe, when a team gets together for the first time and makes a game, and then compounds that challenge by using a technology never used for football before, the game is going to come out like a first generation title, not a 5th or 6th. It's not going to have all of the features and smoothness you'd expect from a 5th or 6th title. That's the biggest source of disappointment for most people disappointed in BB; they expected a 1st title to have all the things a 5th or 6th title would have. They should've known better. Some of us told people to be aware of it, but they didn't listen. Secondly, the OP knew better than to compare BB to Madden 10. Both games are at completely different development stages, he understood that, so he kept the comparison to Madden 06 vs BB. His thinking is spot-on here. I see no agenda from the OP (or anyone else in this thread, since some of them are not even big BB fans) as you're claiming either. I understand why you would think of an agenda, but nothing in his post or others would indicate one at all. You mention BB's player models being huge. So were Madden 06's... they were very huge and everybody complained. It took them 2 seasons to finally cut the sizes down. Have we so quickly forgotten about that? I don't know if you're aware of this or not, but BackBreaker's theme is set in the future. The equipment style is supposed to be futuristic and that explains why they look that way. Madden 06 was set in the present, they had no reason to look like huge monsters but they did because of a poor design choice. BB's stadium's are also future-themed. Explain how stadiums set in the future can be "exaggerated"? How do we know what a stadium of the future will look like? Madden 06 had huge polygonal monster stadiums that were part of the game's slowdown issues (one of Madden 06's many game-killers). The designers eventually cut those down starting with 08, because they saw how impractical they were. ... so, some of the things you're identifying as issues in BB (player model size, stadiums, momentum, collision issues) were also issues in Madden 06. But you're not acknowledging that BB's reason for things like the stadium design and the player models was to have a futuristic theme, while Madden's reason was just poor design focus. And this part "Like I said agree to disagree, Madden 06 was feature-stripped, but the game still represented football pretty well". That part is pretty funny. I think you'll be agreeing to disagree with 99.999% of this board and most of the United States on that one, lol. Saying Madden 06 represented football pretty well is a wild exaggeration. If you call every player including kickers and punters looking like clones of Hulk Hogan for no reason (remember, Madden 06 wasn't set in the future), collision detection so bad that you'd get tackled from yards away without ever being touched, the incredibly broken passing game courtesy of the vision cone debacle (it turned every defender into a sack specialist), the tons of turnovers, the horrible framerate slowdowns that often contributed to killing plays, the horrible frame skipping of animations which also often contributed to killing plays, and the fact that just about everything in the game had some sort of bug, drawback or stripdown... if you call that representing football pretty well, then yeah we'll definitely agree to disagree. I never once said BB didn't have a number of problems, but you're making it out as if Madden 06 didn't have the same or similar issues when in fact it certainly did. Madden 06 was made by about 100 people many of which had been on football projects before. BB was made by as much as 10 times fewer people, most if not all of which weren't football designers prior to this project. Just considering that, I think NM did a good job. I don't come down hard on a first game the same way I would on a 5th or 6th title. Honestly, I didn't even come down on Madden 06 that hard. But when comparison's are made, it's fair to bring up issues. It just seems like you want to make Madden 06 out to be more than the complete disaster it was, when everybody knows it was one of the worst football games ever made from a technical standpoint just on the sheer fact of all that was broken... and they didn't even use the technology with any exceptional quality... it was all a mess. You apparently feel Madden 06 was a better game, you're entitled to that opinion. We disagree. But, if you're disagreeing about BB having the technology edge, then you're simply disagreeing with a fact. There is no question that the physics-based collisions are technologically superior to the broken standard collision-point abomination that was Madden 06 for 360. Re: Which do you think is better: Madden 06 or Backbreaker?
It should also be noted that John Madden Football released in 1989 was not EA's first crack. They'd actually had a Madden on Commodore, Apple II and MS-DOS before that, and before that there was Touchdown Football for the Atari 7800... just thought I'd throw that in there
Moreover, take a look at APF 2K8. Keep in mind, the team who made 2K8 was mostly intact from 2K5 give or take a few people. Yet, on their first try this generation even working with an engine they were well familiar with, the game was light on features and didn't even have a franchise mode. I'll also offer up that 2K's football team was and still is the most talented football development team ever assembled... yet, they released a feature-stripped title. That's what happens with a first-gen football title.
^^^ he's as wide as the Refrigerator Perry and it's not all equipment making him look like that. BackBreaker's sizes are this way because of the equipment. Madden 06, well, they just made everybody wide and bulky for some reason. Madden 06 didn't have a future angle, so what was the point? What were they thinking? Here is a shot of Vick (a QB who isn't that big at all in real life) in Madden 06: Vs a linebacker in BB: Those shots are both taken at just about the same distance, yet Vick looks as big if not bigger than the Linebacker in BackBreaker! LOL!
Look at the equipment used just 70 years ago: Look at today's equipment:
