I have been saying this for years, that 2k should get into the college market.

Now all they have to do is re negotiate with the CLC to make said type of games without the NCAA LOGO's. The CLC has control of Bowls, Conferences, stadiums, and logos. All they would need to do is develop a football engine with physics. That should be a new project with 2k Games

Nothing has changed regarding that, other than a lot more people know what CLC is. It was already known that NCAA would be non-exclusive as of 2014.

Alas...I thought about the Wii U. Madden has elected not to move forward, at least for now, in supporting Nintendos latest console. Madden had some very cool features on the WiiU, most notably the playcalling using the gamepad (pro controller support was also available). Without EA and Madden, WiiU is left without a football title.

2K has an opportunity to do something here. They can develop an NCAA or unlicensed game for the WiiU without competition from Madden. This would allow them to build their brand and give the WiiU some legitimacy amongst the sports gaming community. After all, football is this nation's most popular sport. Without a football title in its library, I'm leaning towards the PS4 but really like the WiiU and what it offers.

Thoughts?

I honestly don't get why 2K can't release Football game for PC and let the modders do the work. Like come on

ROI is questionable on a competitor in general, a one-off product that allows people to never spend a cent on their franchise again if they wanted? Even more so. Toss in a side of liability from providing the tools to violate copyrights. In the end it's ROI and legal liability that don't add up to a very successful proposition, or a risky one at best.

What's not to get?

Seeing as the article took place in 2004, there should be little fear at this point in terms of giving the user community an opportunity to create logos and assets. IP law has changed drastically since then. Look at games like Backbreaker, NCAA's Team Builder, WWE, Forza, etc. The tools are there. So long as a dev team doesn't blatantly place specific shapes, color schemes, fonts, etc. then allowing the community run free should not be an issue.

What specifically has changed about copyright law since then? The likelihood of a lawsuit is determined by the egregiousness of the violation and the interest in protecting their IP. Either way it's another factor no matter how you paint it into why we aren't getting a magical game that can do everything people want from it.

If Backbreaker did better perhaps we'd have seen exactly how far EA and the NFL would have gone to protect their brand/license.

In the end it doesn't matter, it's just yet another risk, there's little to 'not get'

The only football game the Wii U might get is Mario Football lol. In all seriousness that would never happen.
