Well, just like everyone else, I'm hoping this exclusive license deal comes to an end so we can have good football games again (at least the possibility of it). While there's no news yet, at least most of the news is good that it might be coming to an end. Below are a few reasons why this might be the case:

1. The obvious one is no news of resigning the agreement, which was supposed to end in 2013. Of course they still might resign, but no news is good news.

2. The court cases with the NCAA and no longer having exclusive rights to NCAA football games might be playing a factor as well, especially due to the cost associated with the NFL license and the possibility of losing it in a future case.

3. The restructuring going on with 2K. First the cancellation of the MLB series, and second the closing of the 2K Czech and transferring some of those resources to Novato, CA, where 2K sports is located. This could just be related to what social media is saying, but it also might be an indication that they are putting together a team to work on a NFL 2k title.

I don't understand how an exclusive license is the best way for NFL to make money?

Up the licensing fees, if you have a number of groups trying just charge em all what the lowest bidder offers and you get 3x the profits.

I'm not sure that it's the BEST way but I believe it to be the safest way.

With exclusivity, they are paid an agreed dollar amount regardless of the sales.

So instead of being paid by unit, they get their money one way or the other, so if the game were to flop, it doesn't matter to them because they are getting the agreed amount.



I can be corrected if I'm wrong, but that's the way I understand it to work. I don't believe they get paid by units sold with the deal.
