Something just feels off. GOALS feels like that friend that's trying to get you in on the ground floor of this amazing opportunity if you just sit through this half hour presentation and tell 10 friends about it

As a comparison the news from USL always feels like an actually game studio announcing an upcoming project with a TBD date.

The rise of card collecting modes like Ultimate Team and Diamond Dynasty are all you need to see to know this is the next evolution. Whether you're gaming competitively or for fun, you're spending time. Eventually the question is going to be do you want to potentially make money or earn something while doing it -- Something you can carry forward within the ecosystem or trade for value.

Just think about all the yearly sports games you've bought and spent countless hours playing only to have to start over from scratch on the next one because you can't carry anything over. Why not have the option to trade what you've earned for some sort of compensation and start over from scratch by choice?

I do think that such an option would be welcome in sports games.

That said, MLB The Show’s franchise game save carry-over and Madden NFL Mobile’s seasons feature set demonstrate by their mere existence that this functionality is achievable without using an instrument as financially manipulative and exploitative as NFTs.

Almost everyone here preferred franchise updates over card collector modes. But they dominate games because they generate more income. Franchise modes continuously became overlooked. Despite what we want, all it's going to take is more gamers gravitating to play to earn games and bigger corporations losing players because of it. Even if it is possible without using NFTs, trading your time for some sort of income will become more common place as web3 grows.

I figure it's just amount of time before certain people find the exploits when it comes to the likelihood of NFT's being incorporated in sports games and with a company like GOALS likely having a smaller budget I'd worry a lot about security, privacy, etc...

My understanding is that Ubisoft tried NFT's but ran into some issues so it's just a matter of time before they figure it out. Once they figure it out, the copy cat's will soon try. Either way, it's a crappy path we're heading down but at this point it seems inevitable. I'm just surprised games like FIFA and Madden haven't found a way to monetize career mode yet.

I really don't think it's inevitable because NFTs themselves aren't really inevitable. You still can't explain them to people, and until you can, it's hard to find the right avenue to bang it home. Like, at least with crypto -- and this point I'm making purely because it ties back to the game component not to go into non-game stuff -- is you can maybe just sum it up as "I want to make my own casino currency so the govt can't track me." Or just say "crypto = digital money" or whatever. You can't really do that with NFTs.

Ubisoft ran into issues because no one wanted to buy them or cared about getting them after the initial "grind" of snagging the ones through playtime vanished. So through these secondary markets they were using to snag the transaction fees (with random crypto no one cares about) no one was selling them, and thus they don't matter. Plus, the negative PR was IMMENSE and has led to many games simply tapping out and not doing it.

Also NFTs are not some thing that just are without cost. NFTs have a utility cost, hence why so many are just ugly anyway. You need people to make them still, it's not some zero-sum thing like crypto where you can just make a bunch of it through buying graphics cards.

Regardless, happy to see a KG article with some comments on it. (Ohhhhh, burnnnn)

Wow. Well the expectation and positive thinking for an independent sort soccer match immediately turned out badly hear with the NFT babble. I feel like as a solitary player disconnected gamer I am being pushed out of sporting event totally haha.
