THE MANCHESTER DOUBLE
&
---------------------------------------------------
West Ham United vs Manchester City
After a very successful transfer window, West Ham United are 4 games into the league season, and after spending low on 13 players, they come up against the big spenders of the Premier League; Manchester City. The faces of Adebayor, Touré and a certain ex-Hammer Carlos Tevez would not shove fear into the eyes of the opposition, but with their home faithful behind them, West Ham had all chance of pulling off a win.
The Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola started newboys Amr Zaki, Christian Lell and Ryan Shawcross, while there were places on the bench for Pawel Brozek and Roy Beerens. The former Hammer Tevez was almost on the scoresheet, beating Shawcross and Upson before getting a shot away, but it was blocked by Green. West Ham then won a free-kick on the edge of the box. It was chipped in by Noble, nodded down by Cole, but the end product by Boa Morte was hammered over the bar.
Niether team could create any more chances in the first half, and fans were hoping for a more exciting second half. Still there was not a lot of chances made, and the breakthrough could of came on 66 minutes. Cole was brought down on the edge of the box by Lescott, but Given paried away a curling, low shot by the Swiss midfielder Behrami.
After the Hammers made a treble substitution with 20 minutes to go, they were destined to go ahead. Brozek, Beerens and Jimenez were on for Cole, Boa Morte and Noble, and on of them assisted the goal on 80 minutes. After a few passes in the middle part of the pitch, Polish striker Brozek sent Zaki down the middle. The Egyptian held off Lescott, before slotting the ball underneath Given. He was already showing the predatory instincts that he produced at Wigan, and he was looking to continue his goalscoring in the EPL with west Ham United.
The win was sealed just a few minutes before the end of the game. Behrami was sent with a chase for the ball down the right, beating Sylvinho for pace, and after Lescott, who had a poor game, headed the ball straight to Jimenez, the Chilean sub smashed the ball past Given, who was rooted to his spot. It was game over for City, and three points for the Hammers.
FULL TIME: West Ham United 2-0 Manchester City (Zaki 78', Jimenez 89')

Manchester United vs West Ham United
Zola named the same team as he did for Man City, but they needed to work harder than ever, as they faced England's champions, Manchester United. United had 72,000 fans behind them, whilst West Ham brought 4,000 to the "Theatre of Dreams." The last 10 minutes of the City game were crucial, and that's what could be the key today.
It was West Ham though who started the brighter, and almost had a goal in the first few seconds of the half. Evra ran out of position, and Behrami beat Nani down the right. If Evra was there, he would of put in a challenge, but Nani left the Swiss international to cross the ball into the box, but luckily for United, Noble headed the golden chance over the bar.
West Ham had ran out of steam by the half hour though, chasing around the shadows of Rooney and Valencia. Rooney was struggling down the left wing, but picked out an unmarked Berbatov with a pinpoint cross, leaving the £30 Million man to head home, past Green in the West Ham goal. It was a cruel blow to the HAmmers' spirit, as they had worked their socks off for the whole game so far, and they came crashing back down to earth.
West Ham's engine had definately blown, and Nani added a second goal. Nobody dealt with Berbatov's run, and after his cross, Scholes smashed a volley towards goal, but it bounced back off the post. Green had just got back up off the floor, but Nani squeezed the ball in-between the post and Green. 2-0. Nani did his celebratory flip, and West Ham's chances of winning were almost gone.
Suddenly, a revitalised West Ham side were in the game once more after the break. Behrami pawned the hell out of Evra, after rainbow flicking the ball over the Frenchman, but the cross was turned behind for a corner. Noble volleyed the ball towards goal, after Vidic cleared the cross away, and it was inches away from Van Der Sar's top corner.
And a goalkeeping error put West Ham out of the game for good. Green thought he had collected a long ball, but Rooney intervened, poking the ball past him, and setting up Berabtov for an easy finish. Some fresh legs were needd, and that came in the shape of, yet again, Brozek, Jimenez and Beerens.
That put West Ham to bed, and there was no goals from there on in. Zola was left startled at his team's performance, while Green must of been green-faced at the performance of his shambles defence, even though he was to blame for one of the goals.
MANCHESTER UNITED 3-0 WEST HAM UNITED
Berbatov 29'
Nani 36'
