Canada takes it in shootout

BOGOTA (CP) - Lee Ramsey shot wide in the 8th round, giving Canada a 7-6 shootout win that will send them to their first U-20 World Cup Quarterfinal since 2003.

Both teams were scoreless for all 120 minutes of play, but there was no problem finding the net on penalties. But after Ethan Gage missed wide, Adam Street made a huge stop on Aidan Buckley to keep Canada in the match.

The Canucks now go on to play Uruguay in the quarterfinals. The last time they were here they lost to eventual champion Spain 1-0 in 2003 after defeating Burkina Faso in the second round.

Re: Allez Les Rouges - Canada MNT (FM '10)

Canada falls in San Pedro Sula

TEGUCIGALPA (CP) - Canada traveled deep into the heart of Central America, and while they put on a valiant effort, it wasn't enough in a 3-2 defeat to Honduras.

Rob Friend and Atiba Hutchinson scored for the Canadians, who will start qualifying for the 2014 World Cup next June. David Suazo, Oscar Garcia and Carlos Costly responded for the Hondurans, who continue their general dominant streak over the Canadians. Honduras has only lost once to Canada in the past 6 years, in last June's Gold Cup quarterfinal.

While Canada still has a couple of friendlies left before qualifying starts, most notably a trip to Austria in just over a month, this match was a good indication of what Canada has to expect in CONCACAF qualifying. The Canadians haven't made it to the final round of qualifying since 1997, and will need to win in Central America to advance this time around.

Scoring
First Half
HON: David Suazo (Ortiz) 41'
Suazo comes forward and drives a low blast by Hirschfeld

Second Half
HON: Oscar Garcia (Nunez) 51'
Garcia just blows by de Jong and beats keeper in brilliant effort

CAN: Rob Friend (Gala) 62'
Gala makes his first cap, and finds Friend on a cross for his first assist

HON: Carlos Costly (Leon) 76'
Leon's corner finds Costly who volleys it home

CAN: Atiba Hutchinson (Gerba) 82'
Gerba's shot deflects off Hutchinson and past helpless Honduran keeper

Cards
HON: None
CAN: Andrew Hainault, Michael Klukowski

Stats
Shots: 17-7 Honduras
On Target: 7-3 Honduras
Possession: 55-45 Canada
Corners: 7-7
Fouls: 16-8 Honduras

Attendance: 30,286

Man of the Match
Oscar Garcia scored a beautiful goal and added an assist to lead his country to victory.

Upcoming Matches
November 16, 2011 - at Austria
May 5, 2012 - vs Netherlands Antilles
June (TBA) - CONCACAF Qualifying
July 8, 2012 - vs Venezuela
August 5, 2012 - vs Malta

Street carries Canada to semis

MEDELLIN (CP) - For the first time ever, Canada has one of the four best U-20 teams in the world.

In what is a historic point for Canadian soccer, the Canucks beat Uruguay 1-0 in Medellin to send them to the U-20 World Cup Semi Final, the first time in the country's history that has occurred. Canada will take on Germany, while the other match will feature Mexico and Brazil.

Jorge Gordon scored the lone goal for the Canucks, but he also suffered an arm injury. He will not be available for the match against the Germans, meaning Simon Boytchuk will get the start up front.

Canada will be without two more players due to suspensions. Mario Kulis was handed a straight red on the 42nd for a vicious two footed tackle, and FIFA has suspended him for the remainder of the tournament. Franjo Pamic also picked up a yellow card which means he will be unable to play in the semis.

The game turned on the Kulis red card, as Uruguay fired volley after volley towards the Canadian goal. The defense did a solid job of shutting down the attack, but in the 89th minute Ethan Gage went in a little too hard and a penalty was given. Santiago Iriogoyen took the kick, and Adam Street ranged to his right to make a fantastic diving save, then recovered quickly to stop the follow up attempt.

Lineups
Uruguay: D. Lopez (E. Rodriguez 58), Sanchez, J. Lopez, Irigoyen, Gonzalez, Mendez (Baes 45), Borges, D. Rodriguez, de Souza (Artigas 45), Barreto, Curbelo

Canada: Street, Kulis (off 39), Castro, Zaballos (Brown 90), Gage, Pamic, Kliment, Whitehead (King 39), Johnson (Franks 80), Teibert, Gordon

Scoring
First Half
CAN: Jorge Gordon (Johnson) 32'
Johnson floats a cross and Gordon gets up over defender to head it in

Second Half
No scoring

Cards
URU: Santiago Iriogoyen
CAN: Mario Kulis (R), Franjo Pamic

Stats
Shots: 10-9 Uruguay
On Target: 5-5
Possession: 55-45 Canada
Corners: 5-2 Uruguay
Fouls: 13-11 Canada

Attendance: 13,453

Man of the Match
Adam Street came up huge once again, making a huge penalty stop and then another save on the follow up to preserve the lead.

Upcoming Matches
October 11, 2011 - Germany (U-20 World Cup Semi Final)

Germans too much for Canada

BOGOTA (CP) - Gentian Krasniqi scored in the 67th minute to give Germany a 1-0 win over Canada in the U-20 World Cup Semi Final.

The loss will send Canada to play Mexico, who lost to Brazil 2-1, in the 3rd place game.

Canada was outplayed throughout the entire match, and could only manage one shot on target, which was in stoppage time of the second half. Germany has seven shots on goal and the score would've been much higher if Adam Street wasn't very solid once again.

The Canucks clearly missed the offensive output of Jorge Gordon, but he should be back for the 3rd place match against the Mexicans.

Lineups
Germany: Frings, Reimann (Hartman 45), Walther, Roth, Langkamp, Lechner, Hermann (Hartmann 45), Anastasiadis, Kamisnki (Berger 45), Beckmann, Schwabe

Canada: Street, Brown (Clarke 81), Castro, Zaballos, Gage, Whitehead, Kliment, Franks (Baker 69), Johnson (Radosavljevic 45), Teibert, Boytchuk

Scoring
First Half
No scoring

Second Half
GER: Gentian Krasniqi (Schwabe) 67'
Schwabe sends striker through and Street has no chance

Cards
GER: None
CAN: None

Stats
Shots: 13-4 Germany
On Target: 7-1 Germany
Possession: 52-48 Germany
Corners: 7-3 Germany
Fouls: 9-9

Attendance: 21,574

Man of the Match
Danny Walther set up plenty of German attacks from the rear and thus gets this award

Upcoming Matches
October 14, 2011 - Mexico (U-20 World Cup Third Place)
