Champions League Review: Eagles soar high as they defy the odds and gain 2-0 lead in series

Game HighlightsTeam ListMatch FactsMatch Events

You can put away any ill thought about Benfica's team after their inspiring 2-0 victory against Bayern Munich last night.

Despite many of the squad being under 25, they looked cool, calm and collected under pressure to perform at home against the German giant. With their elusiveness and speed, Benfica defeated Bayern 2-0, goals coming from Cristian Tello and Quaresma.

The added edition of El Shaarawy showed how quick the Benfica front six is. Countless times, Ola John, Gervinho, Tello and El Shaarawy dribbled around their defenders in cruise speed before taking off like a jet towards the goal, giving the Munich defenders fits all night.

Goalkeeper Artur Moraes also played exceptionally well when called upon, showing that his blunders in the past game were forgotten one-offs.

With a 2-0 aggregate lead, Munich will need 3 goals more than Benfica to progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, something that will be hard to do with no away goal scored.

"We played well, it was evident," said the Benfica manager. "It was also a very hard and tough fought game, both sides played well but we took our chances, I believe their goalkeeper played above and beyond their whole team -- it was hard to score and we are fortunate to have a 2-0 lead in this series."

Although it's not decided, it looks like Benfica will play Manchester City in the next round, with winners progressing onto the Semi-Final, which could be against Chelsea or A.C. Milan, which would seem fitting for a homecoming for El Shaarawy who flashed some of his talent tonight.

What went down...
Although another slow start by Benfica, after El Shaarawy opened the scoring they dominated throughout and deservedly won the game 3-0. That's two clean sheets in a row in different competitions for Artur Moraes.

Injuries happen...
Just as Benfica start the ball rolling during the 2nd act of the season, Quaresma goes down for three weeks, see you in 3.

Round 21: Benfica draw ahead of Champions League showdown

Team List
Match Facts
Match Events

What went down...
In a game where Benfica outplayed Barcelos, it looked apparent that they are going to miss Quaresma, who is still nursing his hyper extended knee injury. Benfica didn't take their chances and were lucky to come back twice to salvage a draw. Losing now could derail their season with Porto virtually behind.

Champions League exhaustion?
On the verge of going to the quarter-finals, with just 3 days away, how much rest will Benfica have? Will they all be fresh enough to play well and keep fit?

Champions League Review: Draw not enough as Benfica push on to the quarter-finals with 4-2 aggregate win

Game HighlightsTeam ListMatch FactsMatch Events

Despite Javi Martinez scoring late in the 90th minute, Bayern Munich's Champions League run ended this season after goals from Gervinho and Crisitan Tello in the 28th and 32nd minute led Benfica to a 4-2 aggregate win in the two legs played in the last 16.

Kroos scored early for Munich as they led after just two minutes played, however, they couldn't capitalize on the minor injury of Tello during the second half and the Miguel Vitor sending off late in the game.

Bayern looked like the better side for the majority of the game, however, with a 2-0 away goals lead, Benfica didn't look too aggressive in this game despite having to defend from the likes of Ribery, Robben and Schweinsteiger, who wasn't available due to injury during the first leg.

Benfica will now face the defending English champion, Manchester City, in the quarter-finals with the winners going on to face either A.C. Milan or Chelsea -- with what looks like Celtic and Porto bowing out soon.

Is this over, or are you just running two series at the same time?
