You can put away any ill thought about Benfica's team after their inspiring 2-0 victory against Bayern Munich last night.
Despite many of the squad being under 25, they looked cool, calm and collected under pressure to perform at home against the German giant. With their elusiveness and speed, Benfica defeated Bayern 2-0, goals coming from Cristian Tello and Quaresma.
The added edition of El Shaarawy showed how quick the Benfica front six is. Countless times, Ola John, Gervinho, Tello and El Shaarawy dribbled around their defenders in cruise speed before taking off like a jet towards the goal, giving the Munich defenders fits all night.
Goalkeeper Artur Moraes also played exceptionally well when called upon, showing that his blunders in the past game were forgotten one-offs.
With a 2-0 aggregate lead, Munich will need 3 goals more than Benfica to progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, something that will be hard to do with no away goal scored.
"We played well, it was evident," said the Benfica manager. "It was also a very hard and tough fought game, both sides played well but we took our chances, I believe their goalkeeper played above and beyond their whole team -- it was hard to score and we are fortunate to have a 2-0 lead in this series."
Although it's not decided, it looks like Benfica will play Manchester City in the next round, with winners progressing onto the Semi-Final, which could be against Chelsea or A.C. Milan, which would seem fitting for a homecoming for El Shaarawy who flashed some of his talent tonight.
