Southampton FC: The Pochettino Era

The Pochettino Era

New Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino speaks to the press

With his club mired in 15th place and facing relegation, Southampton executive chairman Nicola Cortese made the very unpopular decision to sack incumbent manager Nigel Adkins despite the fact that it was Adkins who had guided the club to two straight promotions.
His choice to replace Adkins was none other than 40 year old former Espanyol gaffer Mauricio Pochettino, a well thought of Argentinian who was widely linked to a future role at one of Europe's top clubs. Said Cortese: " This decision has been made with the long term ambitions of Southampton Football Club in mind. Mauricio is a well respected coach of substantial quality who has gained a reputation as an astute tactician and an excellent man manager. He also shares my belief that the most successful clubs are built by nurturing young players through a developmental system that provides a clear path to the first team, thereby creating a culture that keeps them at the club for the long term," and with that a new era was born on the south coast of England.
In this dynasty I will record the trials and tribulations of Mauricio as he attempts to build Southampton into a perennial contender for hardware, not only domestically but across Europe as well. If at some point his journey takes him away from the south coast and to another destination, we will follow him there as well. I hope you enjoy the ride.

Expert's View

-BBC Radio Solent's Adam Blackmore: "Saints have acquired all three of their top targets in Wanyama, Lovren, and Osvaldo and look to have more backbone, defensive solidity, and scoring depth.
With Osvaldo now in the fold I fully expect Southampton to be a top ten side."

-Southampton midfielder Steven Davis: "Over the course of the preseason we've managed to test ourselves against different styles of play, against good opposition. Preseason is all about building your fitness and getting ready for the first game of the season, so now that we're getting that little bit closer everyone's getting a bit more excited. We've got a lot to look forward to this year and hopefully we can get off to a good start at West Brom."

See you decided to go with a Premier League team. Southampton's a great squad to go with, I think. What made you change your mind? I almost changed the other day myself, but decided to stick it out, and after last night's game with the new patch, I'm glad I did.

Good luck with it!

In the end I just wanted to play top flight football, and have the chance to make it into Europe. I nearly went Italian with Fiorentina, Vincenzo Montella is one of my favorite gaffers, I love his aggressive style but I wanted to earn Europe.
