BRENDAN RODGERS IS OUT!

Rodgers leaves the Reds after disappointing season

A sex scandal supposedly involving Liverpool FC's manager Brendan Rodgers and the favourite wife of chairman Tom Werner seems to have been the last straw after a rather disappointing 2012-13 season for the Reds. The Sun newspaper features an entire investigation about the affair in today's edition. Asked about what happened, Rodgers said "LOL these crazy peoples, I was fired because I failed in all the tournaments, that's it". Whatever was the reason behind the resignation, the fact is Rodgers era in front of Liverpool won't be something for the history books. Holding nothing better than 7th place in last season's Premier League, the most successfull Brittish club in the history of the Champions League will spend the upcoming season far away from the european competitions. Rodgers signing has brought high hopes to Anfield after his impressive work with Swansea City, but expectations came short as he goes away after only one season and nothing to be proud of, apart from the fact that he scored boss' girl.

Gonira Jones is the new strong man in Anfield

Only 12 hours after the announcement of Rodgers' resignation, Liverpool FC has announced the 31-year old Gonira Jones as new manager of the club. The announcement caught some fans in shock, as Jones is an unknown figure for the Brittish, but he got the highest regards in Brazil after participating in the victorious campaign of Clube Atlético Mineiro for their first south american title in this year's Copa Libertadores.

Gonira cheering fans on his arrival

Gonira Jones will be the first Brazilian coach in the Premier League since Luis Felipe Scolari was fired from Chelsea in 2009. Will the new coach live up to the expectations or will he have the same fate as Big Phil? Watch everything on this thread as the history unfolds.

LIVERPOOL KIDS STRUGGLE UNDER THE EYES OF NEW BOSS

Tough debut for Cissokho

It was a long first day at the office for Gonira Jones. In the morning he was presented to his new pupils and commanded mostly physical activities. The new signings Kolo Toure, Iago Aspas, Simon Mignolet, Mamadou Sakho and Victor Moses took part on the morning works, while Aly Cissokho had the mission of commanding the team's junior squad in a friendly match against french team En Avant de Guingamp later that afternoon.

Jones opted to go to Anfield and watch his children's performance instead of staying in the training ground with the main squad. He probably didn't like what he've seen. The youngsters had a very hard time to create any chances and would rely almost exclusively in Joăo Teixeira's long lobbed passes to Ngoo and Yesil, a strategy that Guingamp's defense haven't really had a hard time to deal with given the secure performance of center back Jérémy Sorbon.

In the 31st minute, Christophe Mandanne took advantage of a hole in defense to open the score in a beautiful individual play that the English defenders could do nothing against but watch from distance. Liverpool's kids were hopeless, as they ended the first half without shooting at goal even once.

As per Jones request, Joe Allen substituted Teixeira in second half with hopes of better play making, but the Reds still couldn't find their rythm. The dominance of Guingamp was even more pronounced and the visitors only haven't scored again because of the amazing participation of goalkeeper Danny Ward, one of the only Liverpool players with acceptable performance in this afternoon. Phillipe Coutinho joined the squad late in the match and had some individual sparkles trying to build up crosses with Cissokho in the left side, but the effort wasn't enough.

The Reds have two more friendlies scheduled for this preseason, against Fiorentina in the next thursday in Florence, and Olympique de Lyon, Monday 5 in Anfield. Gonira Jones has already declared that he'll gonna use the first squad in both games as preparation for the Premier League, where the team will debut in August 19 against Stoke City.

NEWCOMERS SHINE AND FIORENTINA BEATS LIVERPOOL

Mario Gomez celebrating with his new colors

Liverpool FC travelled to Italy this night to clash against Vincenzo Montella's Fiorentina in a preseason friendly. It seemed like it would be a safe win for Liverpool, who started with the upper hand and dominated the game entirely in the first 20 minutes, with incisive threats delivered one after another especially through the left wing by Luis Enrique and Luis Suárez, the latter certainly the best player for the English side this night.

In the 21st minute, a smart recovery by Lucas Leiva in the middle, followed by a long through ball to Suárez, put the Uruguayan in great conditions to score. He beat Marvin Compper with a beautiful body dribble to slot the ball perfectly in the bottom right corner of Luca Lezzerini's goal.

Up to that point, most of Fiorentina's attempts to build up plays were denied by the excellent Victor Moses, who made a great game in his Liverpool debut and owned the midfield on the first half.

It was also the debut of goalkeeper Simon Mignolet and center backs Kolo Touré and Mamadou Sakho for Liverpool's side, which went for a 3 CB's formation with veteran Martin Skrtel. Alongside with the newcomers was center-forward Iago Aspas, who started in the bench but joined the game during the second half.

It was a fiorentini newcomer though who made his presence perceived. After a corner kick deflected by Liverpool's defense, Juan Manuel Vargas shot firmly on target and, as Mignolet parried the ball, Josip Ilicic appeared with a diving header to make his very first goal for Fiorentina.

In the 8th minute of the second half, the biggest debut of the night: German superstar Mario Gomez replaced Ante Rebic for the Italian attack.

The game was mostly equilibrated on the second half, until Mignolet's bad luck showed its face again. Matias Vecino tried a shot barely outside of the box, the ball hit the bar, the goalkeeper's back and then went straight into the net: 2-1.

The last minutes of the game were of full blown English pressure from all flanks. It was Fiorentina though who was able to score again. After great play of Giuseppe Rossi, Vargas rolled the ball softly to an amazing first time shot of Mario Gomez.

Certainly not the start manager Gonira had in mind.

STOKE CITY RESISTS TO THE PRESSURE IN ANFIELD

The season starts with no win to Liverpool and Stoke

The first competitive game of the season was a battle of nerves in Anfield. Stoke City's solid midfield offered a real chess match to Gonira Jones' tactics. The challenge was certainly tougher than expected. Despite Liverpool's offensive efforts, it was Stoke who scored first, when a shot from outside in the 29th minute slipped through Agger's thig, just to find Marko Anautovic free in the box to slot it in the bottom corner of a hopeless Mignolet.

The second half of the match had an even bigger dominance of Liverpool in possession. In the 51st minute, a cross from Suárez found the head of Daniel Sturridge to score the equalizer. The pressure remained big after that. In an excellent trough ball from Gerrard, Suárez ball smacked the post at the 63th. Near the end of the match, it was Agger's header to be stopped by the post after Glen Johnson's corner kick. Luck wasn't on Liverpool's side this evening and it's Stoke City fans who will celebrate today as they leave Anfield with a precious point in the table.
