Editor's Note: So my Stoke City chise was cancelled because World Class is just too ****ing hard. I also want the challenge of fighting for promotion, so I'm going with AFC Wimbledon in England's 4th tier Football League Two. I will be devoting most of my energy to this as I don't feel there's much interest in my Rubin Kazan chise since most people don't really know anything about the Russian league. Sorry for all the restarts. This one should stick!

AFC Wimbledon vs. AJ Auxerre

Preseason Friendly
July 28, 2013

Dons Can't Finish Auxerre

Olivier Sorin and Auxerre were on the defensive most of the match.

Kingsmeadow was buzzing with excitement as AFC Wimbledon played host to French Ligue 2 side AJ Auxerre, and the locals saw their fourth tier English side dominate most of the game yet settle for a still respectable 0-0 draw. In the end it was finishing that let Neal Ardley's team down as Wimbledon took 14 shots in the game with only 4 of those finding their way on target. Yet the Dons can be proud of the 58% possession they held while only limiting Auxerre to 1 shot on target. That one Auxerre chance came quickly though as in the 2nd minute Souleymane Sawadogo sent a cross into the Wimbledon box that Lynel Kitambala headed off the bar as the settling down fans took a big sigh of relief. Three chances for Wimbledon followed over the next 28 minutes but none of those attempts actually forced Auxerre goalkeeper Olivier Sorin to make a save. Then in the 45th minute it was the Dons chance to be denied by the framework when Harry Pell's 8-yard header came so close to going in but hit the left post instead. After half, Wimbledon finally forced Sorin to make a save in the 49th minute on a George Porter 9-yard chance. Michael Smith almost got on a breakaway in the 55th minute, but a hounding defender on his back forced a mediocre attempt on target while another post shot occurred in the 65th minute when injured Peter Sweeney almost delivered on a glorious 28-yard cracker but instead hit the right post this time. After the match Ardley praised his boys for their performance over a second tier French club but did admit that "we should have come away with the win." The Dons will now head to Spain where they will be big underdogs again as they face Segunda División side Girona FC. Girona nearly earned promotion to La Liga a season ago with their 4th place finish, so even pulling out another draw should not be expected. However, Ardley has assured that the trip will not be a vacation as Wimbledon look to continue to improve as they move toward their Football League Two campaign which begins in a little over a month.
