Re: The rise -AFC Wimbledon-
Wimbledon continues to scorch through the 2nd league
9/14/13 - AFC Wimbledon 4 v. Wycombe 1
9/17/13 - AFC Wimbledon 1 v. Fleetwood Town 0
9/21/13 - AFC Wimbledon 1 v. Rochdale AFC 0
9/28/13 - AFC Wimbledon 2 v. Plymouth Argyle 1
10/1/13 - AFC Wimbledon 1 v. Portsmouth 1 DRAW
10/5/13 - AFC Wimbledon 3 v. York City 1
No one saw the blitz of ability from this AFC Wimbledon side in the preseason. It's still early yet but this team is atop the League 2 table through eleven and they aren't showing any signs of slowing down. With the second best goal differential in the league, this team has been on an absolute tear and they continue to rotate young pieces in.
Wycombe was projected to be a tough matchup with both squads in the top three spots in the table standings and both teams on winning streaks coming in. Even so, that streak for Wycombe came to a grinding halt as the Don's punished them 4-1, which would start a bad run of form for a squad that would lose four straight en route to falling outside of the top 7 teams and promotion range a position they didn't want to be in.
Up next was Fleetwood Town, a team that is sitting in the bottom half of the table, but even so their defense gave the offensive side of the Don's fits and it would take almost the entirety of the game for a goal to be scored, when Ismet Hejiblok tapped in an easy goal past a sprawled out goal tender to give them the late lead. It would serve as the youngsters only point to date in league action.
Rochdale brought about another tough game but with the defense rising to the occasion for a second consecutive clean sheet, the Don's continued to punish the opposition, albeit the chances were spread thin, the few mistakes the other side made would lead to the 1-0 differential and ultimately the win for Wimbledon.
Plymouth Argyle was another team that has itself entrenched in the middle of a very well stablized table, stuck in the middle of just being a few points shy of a playoff birth, a win would've been a big leap forward even this early into the season for the Argyle said, yet they couldn't quite convert it into anything meaningful. An early goal would be erased easily as Harry Pell knocked in a goal from just inside a box to tie it in the 43rd minute. George Francomb would add the game winner on a chip shot from inside the box with 11 to go in the game.
Once more in a battle against a side that was in promotion territory, number one went head to head with number four and the disparity was nearly non-existant. A well fought match that had both sides clawing for victory ended in a 1-1 draw that kept both teams at pace in the league.
Concluding this stretch of games prior to the Johnstone Trophy matchup, the squad got a matchup against the winless York City squad. York City posed absolutely no threat, Wimbledon scored 3 in the first thirty minutes and subbed out it's tired players and coasted to a 3-1 decision. "Embarrassing!" stated the York City manager that watched as his team was wrecked.
The opposite can be said for the Wimbledon side, AFC has not lost since their opening game against Newport, and shows no signs of any wear and tear. The youth system has been built up in a big way and youngsters are already seeing minutes with the first team, showing just how well off this squad truly is. As they aim to make their roster more acclimated for the push for League 1 birth and ultimately League 1 play, this team could very well make moves in the transfer window in December, but at this point, no one is out managing Ray Edwards, no one is outhustling his side, and no one is beating AFC Wimbledon.
