MATCH REPORT:

After a tame opening period to the game, the home side were awarded a penalty in the 14th minute following a foul on Verhoek. Schindler played a perfectly weighted ball over the top to Bartels, who's shot was parried up in the air and Verhoek was bundled over attempting to head the rebound into the danger area on the left byline. Nehirg stepped up and sent the Paderborn 'keeper the wrong way, making it 1-0 to Sankt Pauli.

Paderborn had three good chances to equalise in a period of 10 seconds as, in the 24th minute, Meha's cross was met by the head of Bruckner and palmed away by Tschauner. Kachunga then stabbed the ball to Bruckner who let it run for Wurtz, and his shot was well saved at close range. Bruckner got another chance as the Tschauner's parry fell to him and his shot from 16 yards was wide.

In the 40th minute, Kachunga found space on the edge of the box after a lobbed pass, and his shot was again well stopped by Tschauner before Wurtz tucked in the rebound from an offside position. 1-0 at half time.

On the first attack after the break, good pressing from Rzatkowski and a burst of pace allowed him to cross from the right side to Verhoek who did well to win the header, but harshly it cannoned off the bar and away from danger.

The controversial incident of the game came in the 75th minute when St. Pauli were awarded another spot kick. Verhoek won a free kick on the right corner of the 18 yard box which was floated in by Schindler and Koc was adjudged to have handled the ball as it struck his upright arm on the penalty spot. Nehrig stepped up again, aimed for the same place but lashed the penalty wide and into the stands, keeping it 1-0.

The game could have been all over in the 88th minute when Bartels, moved to right wing, found space on the edge of the box and laced his shot straight at the 'keeper. The Buccaneers hung on for a vital 1-0 win.

Full time: FCSP 1-0 SCP

    Quote:
I thought in the first half we were very sloppy, the passing wasn't crisp enough but we got the goal which gave us something to defend. Obviously they [Paderborn] are a good attacking side so the clean sheet pleases me a lot. Marcel [Halstenberg] was superb, as were the whole defence and given the fact we had a penalty it could have been even more comfortable, not that I will hold it against him! [Nehrig]

Really great work with this. I'm loving how detailed all of your reports are. St. Pauli have such an interesting history and fan culture, and those kits are class. Good luck!

Thank you so much man! Means a lot! I am an aspiring sports journalist so I use this for practice and the frequency it allows me to write at. I also love using the graphics and making it look authentic.

As for St Pauli, I have followed the since 11/12 when they had the famous turn around from 2-0 down against 1860 Munich and ended up winning 4-2, that pretty much firmed my allegiance. I love everything they stand for and I will visit one day for sure!

Many thanks for the feedback and please keep following and keep writing yourself! Any suggestions let me know.

Note to other followers; I will be updating the top scorers/assists etc. in the Matchday 10 round-up, as well as standings! Thanks everyone!

MATCH REPORT:

Vrabec set Sankt Pauli up slightly differently for the game, with a 4-3-3 formation preferred, including Rzatkowski as a left winger and Bartels as a centre attacking midfielder, with Schindler on the right wing plus Kringe and Buchtmann the holding midfielders.

In the 6th minute, the away side earnt a free-kick on the halfway line and almost caught the hosts sleeping as Gonther rolled it to Kringe who had peeled away into acres of space. He fired a 25 yard shot which the 'keeper gratefully clutched.

The next and only other main chance came in the 17th minute, when after a one-two with Schindler, Nehrig crossed towards Rzatkowski's head but the 'keeper arrived a fraction of a second early to punch clear of danger.

After a tedious first 44 minutes, the visitors finally made the breakthrough right before the break, and they had the conditions to thank for their opening goal. Diring of Erzgiberge played a 20 yard pass across the halfway line which held up in the wind and the soggy pitch, allowing Buchtmann to intercept before finding Verhoek who rolled it to Rzatkowski on the wing. The tricky winger then drove a low shot from the left corner of the box which was parried straight to Verhoek who beat the defender to tap in, making it 1-0 to St. Pauli at the break.

A battle with the elements was producing a dull encounter, the closest being a Verhoek shot following a knock down that fizzed into the 'keepers arms on the hour mark. The closest the hosts came was a header from a tight angle that hit the post and bounced away.

The Buccaneers did double their lead in the 79th minute after a long ball was flicked on by Bartels 20 yards out and Buchtmann ran on to smash it in to the top right corner to surely seal the game at 2-0.

The game was finally killed off in the 85th minute following a break in which Rzatkowski picked up the ball and set Kringe through on goal with no defenders around. Kringe's shot was well saved, but the rebound fell to Rzatkowski who had continued his run, and he slotted in to make it 3-0 with minutes to play.

    Quote:
I think that is our most efficient performance of the season. Of course we have made a habit of not putting teams away and not being clinical enough, but today we were very good and sealed the game at the right time. Defensively we were solid also, a very pleasing all round performance.

1899 HOFFENHEIM 2-1 FC ST. PAULI

St. Pauli bowed out of the Pokal for another year with a valiant effort at Bundesliga side 1899 Hoffenheim, after conceding twice in an 8 minute spell and despite coming close late on.

MATCH REPORT:

It was der Braun-Weiß who started the game brighter, and had the first real attempt of the game when a cross from Bartels, who had been played through by Halstenberg, was cleared to the edge of the box where Daube was waiting, however his drive was caught by the home 'keeper.

Despite the early pressure it was Hoffenheim who took an early advantage in the 19th minute. Firmino picked up the ball 20 yards out before dinking it through for Volland to smash it on the half volley into the bottom left corner, making it 1-0.

It didn't take long for Sankt Pauli to restore parity, as in the 24th minute Gonther pressed and won the ball in midfield before finding Verhoek, who timed his arial through ball to perfection to find Schindler. Schindler beat the offside trap, dribbled to the right side of the box and smashed the ball in the bottom left corner to level it at 1-1.

The pendulum swung back in the hosts favour in what was a remarkable spell. Volland once again got the goal after a Firmino shot from the left side of the box was parried straight in to his path by Tschauner, and he slotted in the easy chance to make it 2-1 with 28 minutes played.

The Buccaneers had a penalty shout late in the first half following a corner in which Thorandt's shot was blocked by Polanski on the ground, but the referee waved it away and it was 2-1 at the break.

There was plenty of fight on show in the second half, but it wasn't to be for the visitors. The home side maintained solidity and restricted St. Pauli to long range efforts mostly. The best chance came when Verhoek found space to shoot roughly 12 yards out from a narrow angle, but it was well saved and cleared. A valiant effort, but falling just short and the cup run is over for another year.

    Quote:
I thought we showed a lot of spirit. We matched them in terms of pace, passing, creativity and other things, it was just concentration that let us down. Against quality opponents, you have to be switched on the whole game, and sadly we weren't today. Our best wishes go to Hoffenheim and good luck to them in the rest of the tournament.
