News and Notes following FN 3 and UFC 3

FN 3 Notes

- John Lineker had his second straight TKO victory. He may not be ready for a title shot yet, but another TKO against a Top 5 contender would all but seal it for him.
- Jury and Gomi won the Fight of the Night Award and Roy Nelson won the KO of the Night.
- With Fight Cards in Sydney, Australia and London, England coming up in February 2015 expect both Mark Hunt and Micheal Bisping to be out of action so that they can headline those cards

UFC 3

- Dominick Cruz versus Takeya Mizugaki was canceled the day of the fight. Those two are expected to reschedule at a later date.
- Tim Kennedy impressed with a big 1st round knockout of Olympic silver medalist, Yoel Romero. He's still a few fights away from a title shot, but with a few more performances like this one then that shot will come sooner rather than later.
- Some say that Rory MacDonald looked the best that he's ever looked in avenging his first UFC loss against Carlos Condit. I don't think that many would disagree with that, however the Million Dollar question is what will happen if GSP comes back. Previously, the two have said that they wouldn't fight one another, but it's apparent now that Rory is ready for his turn now. Whether the next shot is his or GSP's is up to the UFC brass as well as whoever holds on to the belt (Hendricks or Brown) after UFC 6 on December 6th.
- There's a new Light Heavyweight Champ now and the question on everyone's mind was who was going the next title shot? Would it go to Cormier as promised previously or would the long-time champion Jon Jones get his rematch... Well, it didn't take long for us to get an answer from the new champ - At the post fight presser Alexander Gustafsson said that he had to wait on Jones to get a rematch, so Jones can do the same. Jones scoffed at the notion that he would have to take a fight rather than getting an immediate rematch. However, Gus said that if this was a controversial decision that's one thing, but a 2nd Round Knockout, that's another. Jones then fired back and only said "Challenge Accepted". Expect both fighters to be back in action early in 2015.
- Gustafsson took home both the Fight of the Night Knockout of the Night awards

News and Notes from UFC 4 and 5

UFC 4 Notes
- Fight of the Night went to Barao and Dillashaw.
- Knockout of the Night went to Phil Davis with his 2nd Round knockout of Glover Texieira via Roundhouse kick
- Big Nog won Submission of the Night by catching Josh Barnett in an Omaplata in the 1st Round
- No decision has been made yet on Barao's next opponent following his knockout of TJ Dillashaw with just 8 seconds left in the fight. Some believe that TJ deserves a rematch considering how he dominated their first fight and others think former champion Dominic Cruz should get the next shot at the belt he vacated. Cruz is set to face off against Takeya Mizugaki at UFC 6 and if he wins expect him to get the next shot, if not TJ or someone like Raphael Assuncao could get it.

UFC 5 Notes
- Fight of the Night went to Eddie Wineland and Erick Perez for their back and fourth bout in which Perez dominated the 1st Round. However, Wineland came back in the 2nd to get the knockout by a huge front kick (which he also won KO of the Night for)
- Cain Velasquez won Submission of the Night, by catching Fabricio Werdum in a Guillotine Choke late in the 4th Round. However, Werdum was actually dominating the fight with his striking and takedowns up to that point. Werdum shouldn't drop much (if at all) in the rankings after that performance.
- No word yet on who will be the next contender at HW. Cain already has two victories over Dos Santos and Bigfoot Silva, so those two are likely out of the picture (for now). Expect guys like Travis Browne or Stipe Miocic to get a shot if they win their next bout. Browne is fighting Frank Mir at UFC 6 and Miocic is facing off against Dos Santos at UFC 7. Assuming both win then whoever is more impressive will likely get the next shot. If both lose, then no telling who will be next in line for Cain. Fan favorites like Alistair Overeem or Roy Nelson could be dark horses despite being ranked 7th and 8th respectively.
- The Fly and Lightweight divisions had two top challengers earn impressive victories over other top contenders. Josh Thompson looked great in his Unanimous win over the previously unbeaten Khabib Nurmagomedov and Brad Pickett had his second 1st Round Knockout in as many fights. Both guys cemented themselves atop their divisions, however both will be waiting in line for their shots. Thompson behind Melendez and Bendo and Pickett behind John Dodson.

- Suspensions for UFC 5 and 6 are as follows
TJ Dillashaw and Thiago Silva both out 6 months

It was a pretty good fight, but I believe that Barao had probably won 4 (possibly 3) of the 5 rounds.
