Hamburg (AP) - Heartbreak!
Once again, the Red Shorts fall in dramatic fashion in the DFB-Pokal, this time giving up a goal in injury time to fall to rival Wolfsburg 3-2 in the round of 32, after rallying with two late Ihlas Bebou goals to tie the match.
It was an evenly played match through much of the opening half, but a defensive breakdown allowed Bas Dost to come in alone on Mitchel Langerak in the closing moments of the first half and he made Hamburg pay as he blasted one into the left corner of the net to give Wolfsburg a 1-nil halftime advantage.
Vieirinha got behind the Hamburg defense in the 53rd minute and ripped one into the top right corner to put Wolfsburg in control at 2-nil, with Hamburg down a man. Michael Mancienne was sent off in the 29th minute on a hard tackle at midfield.
Klaus Jung went to his bench late and it paid off. Ihlas Bebou came on as a sub in the 73rd minute and gave Hamburg a spark. He drew a penalty in the 84th minute and scored on the penalty kick to draw Hamburg within one. He then scored a spectacular goal in the 87th minute as he ripped a left footed shot across the goal, hitting the top right corner to tie the match at 2-2 and allowing Imtech Arena to erupt.
But the euphoria was short-lived, as in the closing moments on injury time, Raffael centered a beautiful ball for Kevin De Bruyne who beat Mitchel Langerak on his left side to send Wolfsburg into the round of 16 and once again send Hamburg home with a difficult second round defeat.
"We have had a tough stretch," said manager Klaus Jung. "We played valiantly down a man, but it wasn't enough. At some point moral victories are not enough."
Hamburger SV has now lost four consecutive matches that began with Wolfsburg ending their long unbeaten streak with a 2-1 victory here just 10 days ago. Hamburg returns to Bundesliga action this weekend as they face fourth-place Bayer Leverkusen in what is suddenly a big match for the Red Shorts.
Kevin De Bruyne ends Hamburg's DFB-Pokal journey.

Seems like I get the worst draws for the DFB-Pokal too. I always play teams that are in the top 6 in the Bundesliga in the round of 32.....poor luck, I guess.

Hamburg (AP) - The Red Shorts finally broke out of their slump on Saturday afternoon, but it wasn't easy. Hamburg SV overcame an early second half goal from Gilberto Castro, scoring twice within 11 minutes, then held on for a 2-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen at Imtech Arena. The win snapped a four match losing streak that spanned the Euro League, DFB-Pokal and Bundesliga.
On a rainy afternoon, Hamburg came out determined to turn around their fortunes. But the first half was controlled by Bayer Leverkusen, outshooting Hamburg 9-1. However, the teams went to the break scoreless.
Bayer Leverkusen would get onto the scoresheet first, in the 59th minute. Roberto Hilbert dribbled the ball into the box, then centered one for the trailing Gilberto Castro. He struck it into the right corner past Onur Kivrak, who had no chance on the play.
Hamburger wasted no time responding. Instead of hanging their heads, the Red Shorts came right back and tied it as Ihlas Bebou took a pass from Hakan Canhanoglu in the box, returned the pass and Canhanoglu struck a nifty shot into the top right corner to tie the match at 1-1.
Eleven minutes later, Tolgay Arslan stole the ball from Roberto Hilbert, dribbled past a defender and struck a left footed shot into the top right corner to put the Red Shorts in front 2-1. They would hold on to the lead and take home full points, moving them back in front of Wolfsburg and into a tie with Bayern Munich atop the Bundesliga standings through 14 match days.
Matti Steinmann was the Man of the Match with an 8.0 rating. The youngster was a menace in the midfield and had an assist on one of the goals.
Up next for Hamburg is a pivitol Euro League match on the road at Sporting Club Bastia in Corsica. Hamburg currently sits in third place, three points back of Bastia and SL Benfica with three match days left in the group stage.
Tolgay Arslan came through. He was a late line up addition by manager Klaus Jung.

Bastia, FR (AP) - Hamburger SV escaped from Corsica with a 1-nil victory over SC Bastia to remain in the hunt to advance to the knockout stages in the 2015-16 Euro League. Super subtitute Irlas Bebou came into the match in the 74th minute and scored the game winner one minute later for the Red Shorts.
Hamburg played a much tighter defensive match this time against Bastia after allowing three markers in the first meeting back at Imtech Arena. SC Bastia pressed the entire match and had Hamburg on their back foot at times, but they packed it in defensively and took advantage of Bebou's counter attack goal late to escape with a huge three points.
Hamburg outshot Bastia 11-5 and placed ten of those shots on target, making Bastia keeper Mickael Landreau work hard. But in the end, it was the Hamburg back four that was the story in this one. Slobodan Rajkovic, Marcell Jansen, Aymeric Laporte and Dennis Diekmeier were solid, each earning match rating's above 7.2. Rajkovic was the Man of the Match with an 8.1 rating. He was a rock at center back.
Hamburg moves into second place in the Group B table with the win. They are tied with Odense Boldklub with six points, but Hamburg holds an edge in goal differential at +1, while Odense Boldklub has a -3 differential. SL Benfica leads the group with nine points.
Irlas Bebou fired this cracker into the left corner of the net to send Hamburg to victory.

Hannover, Lower Saxony (AP) - Hamburger SV once again could not come away with points and dropped a 2-1 decision to rival Hannover 96 at HDI Arena on a snowy Sunday afternoon. Salif Sane slipped the match winner past Mitchell Langerak off of a corner kick in the 74th minute to give Hannover full points against a slumping HSV side.
Hannover grabbed an early lead in the 5th minute as Lars Stindl scored on a perfectly placed shot into the right corner of the net past a screened Mitchell Langerak.
Hamburg would tie it as the Bundesliga's leading scorer Irhas Bebou dribbed into the box and unleash a powerful right footed shot that beat Ron-Robert Zieler. For Bebou, it was his 11th goal on the season in just 15 matches.
Hannover 96 outshot HSV 6-3, placing three shots on target. They had the majority of possession and generally looked like the team at the top of the table, instead of the team battling to avoid the relegation zone.
HSV is (0-0-3) at HDI Arena since Klaus Jung took over the side in 2013. "Rivalries are always tough matches," said Jung afterwards. "But we seem to have lost some of the intensity that we had early on this campaign and he need to get that back."
The team will now have two weeks off before returning to action after the International break to take on Borussia Dortmund at Imtech Arena.
Lars Stindl put Hannover in front very early on this screened shot.
