Re: One Man's Journey: The Karl Robinson Story
2014-15 MK Dons Season Preview
Play-Offs Or Bust As Robinson Enters Pivotal Year Number Five
Hopes Are High For Arsenal Loanee Afobe
The MK Dons return for their 11th season this upcoming week, and after a good summer of strengthening hopes are high for Karl Robinson's side.
The last campaign was one the club will want to forget as they failed to even make a proper challenge for the playoff positions, but the squad has gone under a major overhaul and now has much more strength in depth.
With three forwards now on the books - Tom Hitchcock, Will Grigg, and Benik Afobe - Robinson will be hoping the goals return after they dried up following the exit of Patrick Bamford in January.
And Dons fans will also be delighted that Pete Winkelman has spent some money on players this summer by paying fees for both Crawley's Kyle McFadzean and Aston Villa's Samir Carruthers.
Danny Green, who spent time on loan at Dons, has joined on a free transfer, and other than Stephen Gleeson, none of the players who have left will have a major impact on the side.
Even Brendan Galloway, who controversially handed in a transfer request to force through a move to Premier League side Everton, didn't feature much or even look great when he did.
Now the Dons just have to hope they can hold onto young sensation Delle Alli as he will be vital in the team's push for promotion.
There is no question Alli will play Premier League football in the future, even against Leicester City in the 2-0 defeat, the midfielder looked composed and showed a maturity beyond his age.
But hopefully he will be able to continue his growth in League One for at least one more season and help the Dons make a push for that all important promotion to the Championship.
They will also be boosted by the fact that no massive clubs have been relegated to this level as they have done in the past few years such as the likes of Wolves and Charlton.
Instead the three teams joining them will be Yeovil Town, Doncaster Rovers, and Barnsley, who are by no means certain to be fighting for promotion at the end of the campaign.
This season is important for Karl Robinson and he needs to show that with a squad which finally has depth, he can get the best out of it and lead the Dons to, at the very least, the play-off places.
Sheffield United, Preston North End, Bristol City, and as always Peterborough, will be expecting to battle it out at the top of the table, but the Dons should be able to take one of the top six positions if this year is to be described as a step forward.
