Taylor Takes Over Portsmouth F.C.

In a surprising move Portsmouth F.C. announced on Tuesday that it had hired a new manager. Taking over the position is American James Taylor. Taylor has had some previous experience running minor league baseball teams in the United States but has never handled a project like this before.

"I may not be a world class strategist in this game but I am a good motivator and I know what it takes to revamp a club. Until I learn so more about the game I will have some help with some of the things that I might not understand but by the end of 2014 I'm sure I will be able to handle almost everything by myself," Taylor said in his press conference interview.

This club has recently fallen on hard times. Portsmouth were moderately successful in the first decade of the 21st century, especially during the 2007–08 Premier League season, when they won the FA Cup, beating Cardiff City 1–0 in the final. They subsequently qualified for the 2008–09 UEFA Cup competing against European heavyweights such as seven-times European Cup winners A.C. Milan. During this period, Portsmouth were recognised to have a large number of international footballers, including England players Glen Johnson and Jermain Defoe, as well as Peter Crouch, David James and Sol Campbell. However, financial problems soon set in and Portsmouth were relegated to the Football League Championship in 2010. In 2012 they were again relegated, to League One, and again, in 2013, to League Two. They began the 2013–14 season in the fourth tier of the English football league system for the first time since the late 1970s.

Taylor now looks to turn around a club that still has recent memories of success but has more recent memories of utter failure. Could this American be the solution to the problem in Portsmouth? Only time can tell and it will be interesting to see when Portsmouth takes on CD Mirandes in a friendly on July 27th.
