Peter Whittingham, who announced his is retiring at the end of the season earlier this year, has long been a fan favourite in Cardiff but now he has cemented his legacy as the club's greatest ever player with the win in the Capital One Cup, surpassing even Len Davies. Whittingham lead Cardiff City out as captain in the finals, given to him by manager Chris Coleman as a show of his extraordinary service to the club and managed to lead the team to their first ever League Cup trophy, calmly slotting away the winning penalty against Chelsea. Last season Whittingham was heavily involved in getting Cardiff's second ever F.A. Cup trophy and their first cup win since the 1920s.
Whittingham is the only Cardiff City player to appear in four cup finals for the club and he is the only player who has scored in more than one cup final, having scored the only goal in the last game and the opening goal in last year's F.A Cup win. Whittingham's statistical record also back up his amazing run in the cups in the last two years. To date Whittingham has appeared in 488 games for the club, the second highest of any player ever, and he has scored 117 goals which also ranks second in club history. It's clear that no player has had the singular impact on the team more than the midfielder.
Whittingham is still going strong and with Cardiff still going strong in the league and the Europa League there is still time for Whittingham to add to his already incredible legacy and it is hoped that Whittingham will be able to reach 500 games for the club, a huge milestone for any player. The club are also hoping that Whittingham can be the player that leads them to their first ever Champion's League place, their first ever European trophy and if everything goes to plan their first ever Premier League title. The Cardiff City board has already announced plans to build a statue commemorating the amazing work that Whittingham has done to be placed outside the stadium near the Canton Stand.
