Caen, Normandie (AP) - Emmanuel Mayuka scored in the dying moments on Sunday afternoon to help FC Metz stun SM Caen 3-2 at Stade Michel d'Ornano to end the first half of the Ligue 1 season. The game winner came after SM Caen had leveled the match in stoppage time on a Kenny Vermeer strike.
Nuno Reis put the visitors on the board in the 29th minute, heading home a corner. FC Metz had dominated the match to that point, outshooting Caen 7-0, and very deserving of the lead.
Caen would level the match seven minutes later when Jacsson Antonio Domingues Piazon worked a perfect give-and-go with Luigi Veldmate, then struck it into the lower right corner on Caen's first shot of the match.
The elation was short-lived though, as Metz retook the lead just three minutes later. Georges Madjeck sent in a long pass to Yeni Ngbakoto. He turned and found a streaking Juan Manuel Falcon, who volleyed it over the head of Paul Reulet to allow Metz to retake the lead.
Caen would press in the second half, but could not find an equalizer. Metz had a great chance to go up 3-1 late as Janis Ikaunieks broke in on a counter attack, but his left footed strike hit the post and stayed out.
Finally, in stoppage time, Kenny Vermeer took a pass from Jacsson Antonio Domingues Piazon, and placed it into the top of the net to level the match at 2-2 and it appeared as though Caen would salvage a point against the Ligue 1 bottom-feeder.
But with Metz appearing to look satisfied with a road point, Emmanuel Mayuka took the ball from his own end, dribbled past a couple of Caen defenders, and then stunned Caen with a right footed rocket past Reulet to give Metz the lead, and full points.
Jonathan Beaulieu came on as a substitute in the closing minutes in what is likely his final match with Caen. He has asked to be transferred in the January window. Defender Jeremt Gelin fell hard on his right shoulder defending a corner and had to leave the match. It was determined that he broke his collarbone and will miss up to two months.
The club will now have off for the holidays and returns to action on January 12th as they host Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain (13-2-4).
