Borussia-Park

Monchengladbach 0-2 Leverkusen

70' YC- P. Hermann (MON)
73' H. Calhanoglu (LEV) 1-0
87' J. Tah (LEV) 2-0

Bernd Leno makes several huge saves in the first half (left), while Hakan Calhanoglu opens his account from a brilliant free kick (right).

Monchengladbach, Germany - Leverkusen was tested early with Monchengladbach coming out with a barrage on Bernd Leno's net. The Leverkusen goalkeeper was up for the challenge and kept the game scoreless heading into the half. The second half was a different story with Leverkusen controlling much of the action. As the half wore on, Monchengladbach seemed frustrated, creating many set pieces for Leverkusen's dangerous Hakan Calhanoglu. On his second attempt, Calhanoglu was able to break the deadlock in the 73rd minute as his free kick went up and over the wall to Jan Sommer's dismay in the 'Gladbach goal. The game was put to rest in the 87th minute with a loose ball from a corner that was volleyed home by Jonathan Tah, the Leverkusen defender.

Leverkusen 2-2 Hamburg

7' YC- A. Halilovic (HAM)
31' K. Volland PEN (LEV) 1-0
51' A. Halilovic (HAM) 1-1
61' J. Brandt (LEV) 2-1
70' P. Lasogga (HAM) 2-2

Pierre-Michel Lasogga finds the equalizer in the 70th minute to rescue a point for Hamburg who outshot Leverkusen 15-11.

Leverkusen, Germany - Both home and visiting supporters walked away from this one entertained as Hamburg were able to level twice in a 2-2 draw. Hamburg found themselves behind early when Douglas Santos took down Karim Bellarabi in the box, resulting in Kevin Volland's first Bundesliga goal for his new side. It stayed that way into the break, but Hamburg came out rejuvenated and capitalized on a failed clearance to draw level in the 51st minute. The game seemed to be teetering back towards Leverkusen's control when Julian Brandt lashed home a close range effort just ten minutes later, however Pierre-Michel Lasogga evened the score with a scrappy finish on a bouncing ball in the box. Neither team should be overly excited or frustrated from the result. It was a game that could have gone either way but ended in a deserved point apiece. Up next, Leverkusen opens their Champions League adventure with a trip into Poland to face Legia Warszawa mid-week.

Legia Warszawa 1-1 Leverkusen

47' INJ - N. Nikolic (LEG)
54' Guilherme (LEG) 1-0
65' K. Volland (LEV) 1-1

Kevin Volland strikes for the second game running to rescue a point for Leverkusen who were outplayed for lengthy periods of play in Poland.

Warsaw, Poland - In the first Champions League matchday, Leverkusen traveled to Poland to take on Legia Warszawa. The match was much more difficult than expected and Legia Warszawa saw the better of play for the majority of the game. Although Leverkusen had the advantage in shots (11-9), Legia Warszawa held a 54-46 edge in possession and looked the more dangerous team. The Group A clash finally saw the first goal in the 54th minute as Guilherme crushed a loose ball from a corner kick into the back of Bernd Leno's net. It didn't take long for Kevin Volland to collect a ball, spin his defender, and head in one-on-one with Arkadiusz Malarz who could do little with Volland's bending shot that found the top corner of the goal. Volland's goal in the 65th minute would turn out to be the last quality chance for Leverkusen as they held on for dear life with Legia Warszawa pushing for the three points at home. Ultimately the final whistle blew with a full-time score of 1-1 and a point apiece. Elsewhere in Group A found Neymar striking three times in Barcelona's 4-1 thrashing of FC Basel in Spain.
