2018/2019 Top 5 League Final Standings

It is now time to review what happened across the 5 Major Leagues this season. A year ago, the winners from the major nations were Manchester United, FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus, and PSG. It's quite fascinating to keep a tracking history of this because you get a decent gauge of the history and what changes over time. For example, Real Madrid made the record purchase for Sergio Aguero from Manchester City in this past Summer Window, and we all saw how massively that impacted City this season with them completely sucking. Another club I'm fascinated to see how they fared is RB Leipzig, since they had to sell a crap ton of their players due to all of the vultures circling around their talent. Plus, you always have your under-dog stories such as those in the Portuguese league in Rio Ave and hell, even Bayer Leverkusen finished in the Top 3 a year ago. Let's take a look!

Top 3 in the English Premier League:
#1. Chelsea (23 wins, 10 draws, 5 losses) | 79 points
#2. Manchester United (21 wins, 11 draws, 6 losses) | 74 points
#3. Crystal Palace (21 wins, 11 draws, 6 losses) | 74 points

Review: We've already discussed this to death but truly, the run that Chelsea went on to finish the year is completely admirable. You can debate how they fared earlier in the season, but they earned the title. United ended up finishing 2nd over Palace on goal differential, but I have no real qualms. We talked about Spurs being bottlers, but now let's look beyond that! Watford and Southampton each had phenomenal finishes by their standards, and when you consider Watford also made the League Cup Final like us they had a truly sensational season. Liverpool finishing 7th was a rebound from 13th a year ago, and Arsenal going from 18th to 8th at 18 games to 38 is good improvement. Leicester City looked good, Manchester City finished 11th which will be hell for Pep Guardiola. We did have two newly promoted teams stay up in the from of Aston Villa and Wolverhampton, which sadly means Swansea City and Huddersfield placed in 20th will go back down. Also a random note, isn't it insane that clubs placed 1-14th all finished a positive goal differential? That typically never happens, yet I guess that means everybody beat up and bullied the final 6 clubs in the league.

Top 3 in Spanish La Liga:
#1. FC Barcelona (26 wins, 9 draws, 3 losses) | 87 points
#2. Real Madrid (23 wins, 10 draws, 5 losses) | 79 points
#3. Atletico Madrid (20 wins, 14 draws, 4 losses) | 74 points

Review: Okay, so FC Barcelona are the Champions of Spain once again, who the hell cares. It's crazy to me that Real Madrid after all those purchases did not see a meaningful rise up the standings, and even regressed in points compared to their 85 from a season ago. Atletico Madrid being right there with both Barca and Madrid in goal differential is a bit stunning. Sevilla finished in 4th, so not a huge drop for them. Seeing Celta Vigo climb from 12th a season ago to 5th this year is just a tiny bit stunning. Tough to see Deportivo Alaves and Las Palmas go do down but they just did not produce at a proper level. Real Betis finishing with the same number of points as Villareal despite the massive disparity in their goal differential is interesting. SD Eibar in 7th with -5 is also something, but they finished in that same spot a year ago. I really would love to see Real Madrid get back to challenging FC Barcelona at the top though, they're too good to always play 2nd fiddle to them.

Top 3 in German Bundesliga:
#1. FC Bayern Munich (24 wins, 9 draws, 1 loss) | 81 points
#2. Borussia Dortmund (18 wins, 13 draws, 3 losses) | 67 points
#3. FC Schalke 04 (19 wins, 6 draws, 9 losses) | 63 points

Spoiler

Review: Hey we have a new club in the Top 3 here! Last season it was Bayer Leverkusen who finished with the bronze but they came up 4th this season, and taking their place was FC Schalke 04 who improved from their own 4th place finish a season ago! Alright so that means barely any change happened whatsoever but still that's not the point. VfL Wolfsburg saw a slight drop in the table, but considering how much everyone from 4th to 8th is bunched up it kind of suggests that really not all that much separated these sides. RB Leipzig like I had predicted saw an even further drop-off and finished in 8th place, if I'm correct I'm almost positive that means no European competition for them next year. One big shocker is the fact that Hertha Berlin finished in 17th place, and I'm certain that means that they've been relegated down to the 2nd Bundesliga! Stunning for them since they finished 7th a year ago, but only picking up 2 wins in 34 matches? Yeah, they deserve to go down.

Top 3 in Italian Serie A:
#1. Juventus (27 wins, 7 draws, 4 losses) | 88 points
#2. Inter (22 wins, 12 draws, 4 losses) | 78 points)
#3. Lazio (23 wins, 9 draws, 6 losses) | 78 points

Spoiler

Review: Another season, another Serie A title for Juventus. It's as if they'll never get tired of their dominance. A ridiculous +60 goal differential is something to be proud of as Juventus conquered the Italian landscape even more than they did a season prior. Still, you had the same two clubs finishing in the Top 3 in the form of Inter and Lazio. The only change that happened in the Top 6 in fact was that Roma and Napoli flipped places from a year prior, and Roma "technically" finished in 2nd but their goal differential did not compare with the other two sides. AC Milan is comfortable with their 5th place finishing. A few clubs dropped here and there like Sassuolo and Sampdoria but nothing too major, especially when you consider how bunched up everyone is. Genoa finishing 8th despite that -10 differential is surprising. There was no overly terrible club either, and it's expected the likes of Benevento and Pescara will be back up for next season.

Top 3 in French Ligue 1:
#1. PSG (29 wins, 6 draws, 3 losses) | 93 points
#2. AS Monaco (24 wins, 10 draws, 4 losses) | 82 points
#3. Olympique Lyon (26 wins, 4 draws, 8 losses) | 82 points)

Review: Once again, no surprise here. PSG finish as back-to-back Champions of Ligue 1 with their victory this season. AS Monaco saw a slight drop in points but they still managed to finish 2nd, and just like last season Lyon finished in 3rd. PSG are just in a class of their own compared to everybody else in France. Still, some clubs like OGC Nice and Saint-Etienne had good seasons. Crystal Palace fans aren't too chuffed to see Marseille finish in 6th but hopefully that means we won't have to worry about ever facing them in the future. Many of the normal clubs you'd expect to find bunched around the middle. The one other club that interests me personally is Toulouse FC due to all of the connections that Lucien LeClair has built from there, and their 42 point finish and 13th place landing isn't too terribly shabby. It'd be really cool if they could get a LeClair-equivalent of a manager and rise their way up a bit to the upper half of the table though.

There you have the major Top 5 leagues! Basically, 4 of the 5 major leagues had their Champions repeat with the exception of the English Premier League, and even then you just had a Chelsea win as opposed to Manchester United. You had one upset in the fact that Perth Glory finished ahead of Sydney FC in the Australian league, but RB Salzburg took Austria again. RSC Anderlecht finished as the Champions in Belgium, finishing ahead of Club Brugge. KAA Gent fell down to 4th place. In Denmark, Brondby IF finished as the new Champions ahead of FC Midtjylland, Aarhus GF, and FC København! The Netherlands saw Feyenoord as Champs with 74 points, finishing ahead of Ajax with 70 and FC Utrecht with 66. Molde FK conquered Sørloth's Rosenborg BK again as Norwegian Champions. In Portugal, Sporting CP won with 88 points, in 2nd was SL Benfica with 83, and in 3rd was FC Porto with 74. Rio Ave finished in 3rd a year ago, yet this season finished 15th! Damn! Finally, Zenit were the victors again over CSKA Moscow by just 3 points. Oh and despite our battering them, FC Basel won the Swiss league!

Well done, now on to review what happened in the Europa League and Champions League!

2018/2019 Champions and Europa League Winners!

It's now time to check out the winners of the Champions League and Europa League! Since it's a bit difficult to breakdown all of the group stages, I'll do a brief summary here. In Group A of the Champions League, defending Europa League Champs Lazio who won it last year finished in 3rd, so they got another crack at defending their title that way. Bayern Munich and Besiktas finished ahead of them. Spurs and Napoli advanced from Group B, Zenit who made the Europa Final a year ago finished in 4th. In Group C it was Real Madrid and Arsenal passing through with Borussia Dortmund finishing 4th. Group C saw Manchester United and Benfica go through, Leverkusen finished in 3rd. Group E had Atletico Madrid and Inter, while Schalke 04 finished 3rd. Then Group F saw Chelsea/Sevilla, Group G Barcelona/PSG, and Group H Juventus/Man City with AS Monaco coming up short in 3rd. In the Europa League, the one upset was CSKA Moscow finishing last in a group, and a number of surprising teams getting knocked out in the Round of 32 that are far too numerous to mention.

Recap: Let's start off in the Europa League. Crystal Palace's competition. Marseille, the club that defeated us did not last very long as they went out to the eventual Champions in the Round of 16. It was a hotly contested two legs, but ultimately the Italian side Roma came out on top. Lazio failed to defend their Europa League title as they were ousted by AC Milan, who did their best but they could not topple RB Leipzig who thoroughly dominated this tournament all the way up until the Final. Hell, Timo Werner made this competition his b!tch in general. Roma defeated Sporting CP and Bayer Leverkusen and then toppled the German side in an entertaining final, well done and well deserved by them. Over in the Champions League, just about all the under-dogs were smashed early. Bayern crushing Arsenal is HILARIOUS, Spurs failed to defend their reign as they lost to Barcelona, Madrid beat City on penalties, United going out to Spurs was crazy, and talk about one hell of a final between Barcelona and Chelsea, and it seems Messi finally conquered his short-comings against the top flight English side.

Lucien LeClair has taken the Ivory Coast job. That means no major tournaments in 2019, but we do have the South American Cup! Let's see if Messi can come through and finally deliver a big trophy for Argentina!
