It wasn't without blood and tears. 120 minutes weren't enough to tell us who the second finalist of the 2018 World Cup would be.

At the end of the first half, Vida pushed Özil for a German penalty kick, which Thomas Müller didn't waste. The solid defensive performance of Germany in the second half made it look like no surprises could happen this time, but in one of the few Croatian chances, Brozovic finished wonderfully, first time hit out of the box after Mandzukic's pass. The game was tied.

At extra-time, lots of chances from both sides, Subasic performing well in this World Cup once again and denying a German goal. And we got to the first penalty kick shootout of the World Cup, for a place in the final.

For Croatia's despair, Manuel Neuer saved the very first penalty, of Mandzukic. Gündogan, Werner and Khedira scored their penalties for Germany. Kalinic, Brozovic and Badelj scored for Croatia. Subasic gave new hope to Croatia saving the 4th German shot, of Hummels. Strinic for Croatia and Sané for Germany scored both for a 4-4. The sudden death saw Pasalic hitting the post and giving the ultimate chance for Germany. And Hector didn't waste it. Congratulations for the run, Croatia. But it's Germany again at a World Cup final to defend their championship.

Germany extend their leadership as nation with most World Cup finals. It will be their 9th in 19 World Cups played. Really amazes me how often they get there.

Another record was reached. Now Germany is tied with Argentina as team that played most penalty shootouts in history (5) - with one advantage: while Argentina was eliminated once (in 2006 - against Germany, obviously), Germany was not. They won ALL the five shootouts they played in history.

If Germany beat Russia, it will be only the third time a team succeed in the World Cup as defending champions. It only happened so far with Italy (1934-1938) and Brazil (1958-1962).
