Round of 16 Review / Quarter-Finals Preview:

Round of 16 Review

Results:

C1 vs D2: Australia def. by Argentina 1-3 (a.e.t.)
A1 vs B2: Russia def. Morocco 2-1 (a.e.t.)
B1 vs A2: Portugal def. Saudi Arabia 3-0
D1 vs C2: Nigeria def. by France 1-3
E1 vs F2: Switzerland def. by Mexico 0-1
G1 vs H2: England def. by Poland 1-2
F1 vs E2: Sweden def. by Costa Rica 0-1
H1 vs G2: Senegal def. by Belgium 1-3

Main Event Match Outcomes and Major Stories:
  • Australia vs Argentina: Argentina once again just slipped through here, after a 90th minute penalty by Mile Jedinak hit the crossbar and forced the game into ET where Argentina would take advantage of the tired Australian's. With Russia once again advancing it will be interesting to see if Argentina can hold them off, although the Aussies will be hoping that answer is no.
  • Nigeria vs France: No surprises here after all as France would just dominate all game and Lloris would of kept his clean sheet if it wasn't for Victor Moses' last kick of the game goal, but an easy win for the French.
  • Switzerland vs Mexico: We said this would be one of the closest games of the world cup and this definitely was it, a nail biter throughout. A lot of fingers were pointed and risks taken by Mexico with the fact they played recently injury Javier Hernandez and after his sub before half time the raised questions were dropped and the man who he was subbed for, Raul Jimenez would score the game winner. In what was a heartbreaking loss for Switzerland, Mexico finally get through and now look forward to an easy run to the finals.
  • Senegal vs Belgium: It is sad to say that there is no more African teams left in this years world cup and that Senegal's great run has come to an abrupt end. An absolutely dominant game from the Belgian's, who had Senegal in the palm of their hand for the whole game, would prove their favoritism and move closer to the coveted trophy.
  • Penalties: One of the biggest parts of this world cup is the penalty kicks. It has been very talked about and some of them very costly. We saw Vardy's missed penalty for England against Belgium nearly cost them the game but in these last eight games a few have been seen. Australia could of made the quarter's had Mile Jedinak nailed his last minute PK before Paulo Dybala would later miss his own spot kick in that game. Next, Morocco had an 80th minute penalty that was saved and that would have won them the game and stopped them from being beaten by Russia. Finally, Belgium stomped on the already down Senegal with a penalty to make it 3-0, ruining their hopes of a come back and you could see the side had given up. Controversially, these penalties have been game changers and there is no problem with that, but it has been a huge influence on some teams, and the question is whether that will continue heading onto the quarter-finals and even later in the tournament.
  • Quarter-Final Surprises: All or at least most of these round of 16 games had an obvious winner but some real surprises are going through as we head to the final eight. Poland took out one of the biggest dangers in England, Mexico broke Switzerland's heart and the biggest of all, Costa Rica, a team everyone counted out of even making it past the group stage, got past Sweden to make a huge appearance in the quarters against Belgium.
  • Awards: The race for the Golden Boot is now up to two men mainly unless something dramatic happens, after Cristiano Ronaldo and Eden Hazard would both score goals to be equal on five. The Golden Ball race could be even harder to pick, as Eden Hazard leads once again from two of Portugal's best Ronaldo and William Carvalho as Polish midfielder Piotr Zielinski also joins the race. John Obi Mikel is also still being mentioned but a miracle would have to happen for him to win the award. The Golden Golve has not changed much with former leaders Caballero and Sommer now being joined by Mexico's Guillermo Ochoa and Portugal's Rui Patricio, as clean sheets are hard to come by as Belgium have taken off in favoritism to win it all as France and Portugal face each other next, who are second and third favourites, as all three teams are on the same side of the bracket.
  • Statistics: The yellow card count continues to rise as the total is now 68, after nine in the eight round of 16 games. Russian Fyodor Kudryashov would be the fourth man to be red carded at this years' tournament and Marcos Rojo the first to receive two yellow cards and get suspended, but his injury will keep him out of his upcoming match anyway. Speaking of injuries, there are still six major injuries to the eight teams left here at the world cup.

Match Day 21:

Portugal vs France, 1B vs 2C, Fisht Olympic Stadium, 21:00 MSK

Main Event Matches

We couldn't give you a list of main event matches as all four are equally as good and main event quality, so instead we have covered all of the matches.
  • Russia vs Argentina: The home nation here has been one of the real sides to continue to progress and they proved that late against Morocco. Both of teams are the only ones to have played games in extra time so far and both look not as strong as they could be, especially Argentina, who were lucky to make it past Australia. The winner of this should prepare for a huge semi-final match, but either way it would be a great story to either see the hosts make it or even Messi win back to back.
  • Mexico vs Poland: So unexpected from both of these nations to make it this far as everyone had eyes on a Switzerland vs England clash in this slot. Poland have proved they are not a one man show with so many key figures stepping up for the team as Mexico's lineup will be full blown and ready to go against the Pole's, but expect a low scoring match and maybe even penalties.
  • Costa Rica vs Belgium: Costa Rica even being here is a huge achievement by itself, but they are not going to sit down and let Belgium stomp on them like Senegal. As one of the last non-european teams left Costa Rica will not give up and have hopes of making it to the final and even with three at the back it is so hard to score against them. But then comes Belgium, the favourites for the whole tournament and the biggest star studded squad here, a huge match presents itself for them here and they are hoping for a blowout and an easy run to what will be a difficult last two games if they make it.
  • Portugal vs France: It was seen as one of the biggest maybe match-ups of the tournament and it is going to happen in a huge Euro 2016 final replay. France are stronger and you could argue Ronaldo is in his absolute prime as these two giants go head to head. The winner will go through as favourite if Belgium fall, or the only team with hopes to beat them in what will set up a huge world class semi-final. Both teams will want the win and this could be a huge high scoring affair, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see the winner of it all to come from this game.

1A vs 2D: Russia def. Argentina 1-0
2F vs 2H: Mexico def. by Poland 0-2
2E vs 2G: Costa Rica def. by Belgium 0-3
1B vs 2C: Portugal def. by France 0-2

Main Event Match Outcomes and Major Stories:
  • Russia vs Argentina: Argentina played the same risk that Mexico did against Switzerland, playing their injured star man to start the game. Messi was done by the half still feeling the effects from his injury. That was the point that Argentina would give it up holding on still in it until the last five minutes before Aleksandr Yerokhin would score an amazing header to set the hosts up for the semis.
  • Mexico vs Poland: Poland made us eat our words here as they scored twice in the first 15 minutes, with their first coming from an amazing first play of the game goal by new star Piotr Zielinski. Mexico tried all they could but only would have two shots in the entire game and they quite literally would choke, as Poland looked even more dominant than against England and Fabianski this time got his clean sheet.
  • Costa Rica vs Belgium: Every game Belgium play things look easier for them and that was shown here once again against Costa Rica. Kevin De Bruyne stood up for the Belgian's and score in the first five before nearly nailing a second, but he was called for offside. Luckily for him though a huge mistake was made by Keylor Navas and KDB got it right back and put it in the back of the net. This game was all about Belgium though and they move forward to their hardest match yet...
  • Portugal vs France: For the first time this tournament, Portugal (and Cristiano Ronaldo), did not show any of their firepower. France made this game look like nothing more than an exhibition and if Portugal didn't have Rui Patricio in goal the score could of been 10-0. Some new names showed they were stars for the French as they gave it all in the first half and just held off any Portuguese attack with their star defense and Lloris in goal.
  • Awards: Eden Hazard scored once again to become the outright Golden Ball leader as Ronaldo no showed. His main danger is Polish midfielder Piotr Zielinski who has four and is really making Poland his side at the moment. The Golden Ball race is also believed to be down to those two men as Hazard is favourite with Zielinski catching him, with a few eliminated names such as Ronaldo and William Carvalho still having claims, but they are very unlikely. The Golden Glove has become the biggest talking point with no keepers being able to get over two clean sheets, as eight all share the lead with two. All four teams' goalkeepers share favouritism with Russia's Igor Akinfeev, Poland's Lukasz Fabianski, France's Hugo Lloris and Belgium's Thibaut Courtois. Belgium have shortened even more to win the tournament as France are seen as underdogs in their semi-final clash.
  • Statistics: The yellow card count is now at 72, with N'Golo Kante becoming only the second player to receive two yellow's, as no more red cards were shown. The injury list is also shortening as Belgium are the only team with a player on there, as they have two.

Match Previews
  • Russia vs Poland: Once again we have one blockbuster and one smaller semi at this years world cup and I bet you can guess which is which. First up we have two absolute underdogs facing off for the first place in the final. Russia have improved bit by bit after their final group game against Uruguay and the hosts are looking to win their own world cup, a feat only achieved three times before. Poland are coming off their best run ever and they are the feel good story for this one, as they were counted out completely for their final group match. Either team will be underdog if they make the final and what a huge match this is for both nations.
  • France vs Belgium: In what we wish could have, and should have been our FIFA World Cup final, has been delivered early as one of these star-studded nations will not be competing for the illustrious trophy. France continue to find form when it is needed most, as all of the teams' players continue to stand out as Belgium have proved why they have been favourites nearly since day one, dominating opponents everywhere they go. It has been said this winner is certain to take the trophy, but stranger things have happened. But we all know it is a must for both of these teams that they make it, but the question is who will it be?
