History
Founded in 1907, they bounced up and down between first and second division play until the formation of the Bundesliga, Germany's new professional football league, in 1963.

The next season saw them in the tier II Regionalliga Süd alongside local rivals VfR Mannheim. A string of unimpressive results finally led to relegation to the Amateurliga Nordbaden (III tier) in 1970.

Support from a new sponsor, the snack chip maker Chio, revived the team and helped their return to the second division where they played as SV Chio Waldhof Mannheim from 1972 to 1978.

They continued to play as a middling side until they broke through to the Bundesliga in 1983. Waldhof spent 7 seasons in the top flight until a 17th-place finish saw the club relegated at the end of the 1989-90 season.

They played for 7 seasons as a 2. Bundesliga club until slipping to the Regionalliga Süd for 2 seasons in 1997-99. Their return to the 2. Bundesliga in 1999 was cut short in 2003 when financial irregularities saw the German Football Association deny the team a license, dropping them to the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg (IV tier).

Waldhof again had their license withdrawn in 2010 and were demoted back to the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg, now the 5th level of German football.

On June 11, 2011, they defeated FV Illertissen in their final league match to clinch promotion and also set a new 5th division attendance record of 18,312.

In the 2018-19 season, the team secured the Regionalliga Südwest championship and direct promotion to the 3. Liga.

City
Mannheim is a city in the southwestern part of Germany, the 3rd-largest in the German state of Baden-Württemberg after Stuttgart and Karlsruhe with a 2015 population of approximately 310,000 inhabitants. The city is at the center of the larger densely populated Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region which has a population of 2,400,000 and is Germany's 8th-largest metropolitan region.

Ground
Carl-Benz-Stadion has a capacity of 25,667 and was opened in 1994. In 2008, it also hosted TSG 1899 Hoffenheim for the first-half of that club's first season in the Bundesliga, until Hoffenheim's new stadium opened in January 2009.

Notable Product
Current AC Milan and Turkish international Hakan Çalhanoğlu was born in Mannheim in 1994. He spent his youth career at Waldhof Mannheim from 2001 until 2009.
