JULY 2002 SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS
Results

Oscar Bonavena defeats Henry Cooper by TKO at 1:58 of Round 6
Bonavena earned his first win in 3 professional fights on Saturday night by TKO. The fight was stopped by ringside doctors as Cooper suffered a cut right eye in the first round and it horribly worsened throughout the bout. Bonavena was in control from the opening bell and even knocked Cooper down in the 3rd round for a 6 count.

Note: Fight was stopped due to 4th occurrence of Cut Right Eye.

Buster Douglas defeats Ossie Ocasio by Unanimous Decision
Judges: 98-90, 98-90, 97-91
A month after his fight with Frank Childs was ruled a No Contest, Ocasio was back in the ring to take on Douglas. Buster scored 2nd and 10th round knockdowns and won comfortably with the judges.

Tyson Fury defeats John Ruiz by Split Decision
Judges: 94-97, 96-94, 96-94
Fury scared his faithful fans on Saturday night by squeaking out a split decision over heavy underdog Ruiz. The difference in the fight likely came from Fury's 82 punches landed versus 65 for Ruiz.

Max Schmeling defeats George Foreman by Unanimous Decision
Judges: 95-94, 97-91, 95-94
Schmeling became the first to 10 wins in the UBF as he outfought a reeling George Foreman for a unanimous decision. Foreman had the early momentum, scoring the fight's only knockdown in the first round, but squandered the lead and faded late.

Note: I don't know what to say. Big George is cursed in this federation. He has a great card and great ratings. It's not about the game, he's just had crap luck. The thing about him is that if you can avoid being knocked out by him his stamina is terrible. He fatigued during the 6th round and that was pretty much it. This was not a factor in his other fights (they were mostly flukes) but it was tonight.

David Tua and Joe Frazier bout ruled No Contest
For the second consecutive month, the UBF had a fight ruled a No Contest. This time it was the main event. The fight was stopped 1:25 into round number 2 when Joe Frazier was struck by a bottle thrown by a fan. What ensued were a few moments of bedlam. Fans went after each other and the fighters and their corners tried to go after fans but security and police surrounded the ring within a minute and order was restored.

Police arrested the fan and have identified him as Canadian national "Money99". Apparently, he was in attendance to disrupt the main event as a display of his angst with what he calls "unfairness" towards number 9 ranked contender and fellow Canadian George Chuvalo. Charges are pending.

In the aftermath of Saturday night the UBF announced that Tua-Frazier would not be re-scheduled in the immediate future but on Sunday they reversed direction. The federation released a statement that read, in part, "After discussions with the fighters, security and police, we have decided to re-schedule the fight as part of a 6-fight card next month. We will have additional security and police presence to ensure our fans do not have to have a repeat of last night's disturbing theatrics."

For now, the UBF just wants you sent back to Ontario. No decision has been made on a lifetime ban so stay in line and we may let you attend a fight in the future.

AUGUST 2002 UBF SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS
Results

James Braddock defeats Luther McCarty by TKO at 1:14 of Round 5
Braddock put McCarty on the canvas for an 8 count early in round 5 and then brutalized him until the fight was stopped after it resumed. The fight was extremely close until the knockdown with the majority of analysts favoring McCarty through 4 rounds.

Anthony Joshua defeats Arthur Pelkey by TKO at 1:46 of Round 10
Joshua would have won this fight without the TKO as he dropped Pelkey in the 5 round and again in the 10th. For good measure, AJ pounced after Pelkey arose from an 8 count in the final frame and beat him until the bout was stopped.

From ringside, Pelkey immediately announced his retirement following the loss. He finishes his UBF career with a record of 0-5-1 (0). London's Frank Bruno will replace Pelkey as he enters the UBF rankings this month at #31.

Max Baer defeats Jake Kilrain by Unanimous Decision
Judges: 96-92, 95-93, 95-92
Baer was knocked down in the opening round and spent the rest of the fight playing catch up. Baer countered with a knockdown of Kilrain in the 6th round but likely won the fight in the 9th round when he scored a second knockdown. Kilrain suffered a cut to his left eye in the 1st round that was so bad by the 8th (CLE4) that his corner considered throwing in the towel when the doctors at ringside did nothing.

Wladimir Klitschko defeats George Godfrey by TKO at 2:20 of Round 6
Dr. Steelhammer finally wore down and knocked Godfrey in the 6th round after landing a barrage of punches from the opening bell of Round 1. Following the flash knockdown, Klitschko went right after the wobbled Godfrey and finished him.

Bob Fitzsimmons and Muhammad Ali Fight to a Split Draw
Judges: 97-92 Ali, 95-95, 96-95 Fitzsimmons
If not for an 8th round knockdown of Fitzsimmons, Ali may very well have lost this fight. The bout was surprisingly close throughout, as indicated by the total of punches landed which favored Ali 97-92.

David Tua defeats Joe Frazier by KO at 1:34 of Round 7
In the main event, which was rescheduled after last month's bottle-throwing incident, Tua surprised the former champion Frazier on Saturday night by knocking him out in the 7th round. Tua had previously scored a knock down in the 2nd round and had gone punch-for-punch with Smokin' Joe throughout unlike Tua's loss to Jim Jeffries which saw Jeffries heavily out-punch David.

Judges: 58-56, 58-55, 59-54
By the end of this one, Vargas had a moderate gash above his right eye, a cut above his left eye and swelling to his left eye.
