JUNE 2003 UBF TUESDAY NIGHT FIGHTS
Results

LW- Jack McAuliffe defeats Red Baxter by KO at 1:43 of Round 7
Newly-crowned UBF Lightweight Champion took out Red Baxter in a non-title bout on Tuesday night. The champ won with a 7th round knockout to improve to 2-0-0 (2).

MW- Jeff Smith defeats Patsy Cragen by Unanimous Decision
Judges: 99-92, 97-94, 100-91
Smith was in complete control and won this one easily on the scorecards. A 3rd round knockdown of Cragen marked the only time either combatant hit the canvas. Smith is now 2-0-0 (1).

JUNE 2003 UBF WEDNESDAY NIGHT FIGHTS
Results

LW- Tony Canzoneri defeats Sergei Artemiev by Unanimous Decision
Judges: 96-93, 98-92, 97-93
Artemiev suffered a cut right eye in the 5th round and a knockdown in the 6th as Canzoneri won with ease on all three scorecards. Artemiev is 0-2-0 (0) and Canzoneri is now 2-0-0 (0).

LW- Carlos Ortiz and Tracy Spann bout ruled No Contest
At 2:54 of Round 3 of the night's second bout, a structural issue caused a portion of one of the ring's neutral corners to collapse. No one was injured but the sagging corner led to the fight being cancelled along with the rest of the night's card.

With infamous UBF super fan Money99 set to attend Saturday night's 7-bout card, rumors began to fly that he was behind the collapse. Money99 had previously been banned from attending UBF events for throwing a bottle that struck Joe Frazier during his July 2002 fight with David Tua. That incident led to the Frazier-Tua bout being ruled a No Contest and Money99 being sentenced to 180 days in jail.

Within an hour of the ring collapse, UBF President steelerfan held a press conference in which he addressed the ring issue and the rumors. In part, he stated, "the ring collapse was caused by a structural failure. I assure you, any scenario that you may have heard involving sabotage is simply false."

In addition to Ortiz-Spann the following fights were cancelled and steelerfan said there is no immediate plan to reschedule any of them:

1. WW- #27 Aaron Davis 1-0-0 (0) vs #26 Billy Collins 0-1-0 (0)
2. WW- #31 Andre Berto NR vs #30 Henry Armstrong NR
3. WW- #39 Adolfo Viruet 0-1-0 (0) vs #38 Young Corbett III 0-1-0 (0)

Nah, we cut some corners in the UBF so I'm surprised we haven't had something much worse go wrong yet

JUNE 2003 UBF THURSDAY NIGHT FIGHTS
Results

MW- Bobby Watts defeats Paul Pender by Split Decision
Judges: 96-94, 94-96, 96-94
Watts improved his mark to 2-0-0 (0) on Thursday night with a split decision victory over Paul Pender. Pender falls to 0-2-0 (0).

MW- Frank Klaus defeats Frank Fletcher by KO at 0:34 of Round 9
Klaus knocked Fletcher down in the 4th round and then knocked him out in the 9th on Thursday night. Klaus is 2-0-0 (1) while Fletcher drops to 0-2-0 (0).

HW- Henry Cooper defeats Buddy Baer by Split Decision
Judges: 96-92, 95-94, 93-95
Cooper, a known bleeder, avoided disaster on Thursday night when a gash was opened above his left eye in the 3rd round of his fight with Buddy Baer. The gash was made worse in the 4th round but the fight was allowed to continue. To make things worse, Cooper suffered a 9th round knockdown, the only one of the fight. Despite all of this, Cooper managed to win this fight on two of the judges' scorecards. Cooper earns his 10th win in the UBF, improving to 10-5-0 (5). Baer is now 5-6-0 (5).

JUNE 2003 FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS
Results

LW- Pedro Montanez and Ruben Navarro fight to a Split Draw
Judges: 96-96, 95-98, 96-95
Punches landed told the story of just how close this fight was as Montanez held a narrow 86-82 advantage. Montanez is now 1-0-1 (1) while Navarro is 0-1-1 (0).

LW- Darleys Perez defeats Manny Paquiao by Unanimous Decision
Judges: 99-90, 99-92, 97-94
Aside from a 2nd round knockdown of Paquiao, this fight was very evenly fought with Perez landing 101 punches to Manny's 92. Despite this, the judges seemingly gave all the breaks to Perez as he won convincingly on the scorecards. Perez's debut was a memorable one while Paquiao drops to 0-2-0 (0).

Note: I have no explanation for this except that the dice hated Paquiao. He should have won this fight easily (unless he was stopped). For him to lose after going the distance is just shocking. When I knew he was losing, I found myself rooting for him to get a KO but when it was over, I was glad he lost because he was terrible. I think he has become my "Foreman" of the lightweights. No breaks for him.

LW- Lew Tendler defeats Al Singer by Unanimous Decision
Judges: 97-94, 96-94, 97-95
With a 120-77 advantage in punches landed, Tendler was in control for most of the bout as he scored well with the judges. Tendler is now 1-0-1 (0) while Singer is 2-1-0 (1).

WW- Paul Williams defeats Curtis Cokes by Unanimous Decision
Judges: 99-92, 100-91, 100-90
As the scorecards tell, Williams met little resistance in his debut from Cokes. Williams landed 92 more punches than his counterpart (144-52) in picking him apart for the win. Cokes falls to 1-1-0 (1).

WW- Milton McCrory defeats Marcos Maidana by KO at 1:52 of Round 10
McCrory was the clear winner in this one, even without the knockout, as he landed 122 punches to just 39 for Maidana. But with each fighter hitting the canvas earlier in the fight (Maidana 2nd Round, McCrory 5th Round) he was better off ending this fight early to avoid Maidana's considerable power catching him off guard. McCrory is now 2-0-2 (1) while Maidana falls to 1-1-0 (1).

JUNE 2003 UBF SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS
Results

MW- Ken Overlin defeats Ronnie Harris by KO at 1:44 of Round 5
It was a very close bout for 4 rounds but Overlin caught Harris with a devastating left hook to end the fight early. Overlin is 2-0-0 (2) and will fight on Tuesday Night Fights in July. Harris is now 0-2-0 (0).

MW- Rocky Graziano defeats Alan Minter by Unanimous Decision
Judges: 98-90, 100-88, 100-89
Graziano, in his UBF debut, knocked Minter down in the 4th and 6th rounds on his way to a convincing decision. For the night, Rocky landed 124 punches to Minter's 39. Minter is now 1-1-0 (0).

MW- Bernard Hopkins defeats Nigel Benn by Split Decision
Judges: 93-97, 97-94, 97-92
It's rare to have a split decision with such differing views from the judges but Hopkins was the rightful winner in this one. He held a 35-punch margin (104-69) in punches landed and was the clear winner in 6 rounds in our eyes. Hopkins is 2-0-0 (0) while Benn was the loser in his UBF debut.

HW- Max Schmeling defeats Anthony Joshua by TKO at 1:14 of Round 3
Schmeling improved to 12-2-0 (8) as one of the most underrated fighters in the UBF continued to take out opponent after opponent. Joshua falls to 7-4-1 (5) while the "Black Uhlan of the Rhine" will fight next month on Tuesday Night Fights.

HW- George Foreman defeats Cleveland Williams by TKO at 0:54 of Round 7
Avenging a disgraceful 3rd round TKO loss to Williams in August of 2000, Foreman hopes to have found himself and put the troubles that followed that loss behind him. His impressive win over Big Cat Williams tonight is a step in the right direction. Big George is now 5-5-0 (3) while Williams slips to 4-5-0 (3).

HW- Muhammad Ali defeats Joe Frazier by Unanimous Decision
Judges: 95-94, 94-93, 94-93
In another act of revenge, it was Ali serving it up in response to his September 2001 loss to Frazier. At the time, Frazier was the UBF Heavyweight Champion and he handed Ali an embarrassing 1st round TKO loss. This fight looked to be headed towards another Frazier win after the former champion scored a 3rd round knockdown of Ali. However, Ali turned the fight on it's head by scoring a pair of knockdowns of Frazier in 40 seconds in the 8th round. Ali is now 7-1-2 (1) while Smokin' Joe is 10-3-1 (7).

Full disclosure: Contrary to conventional scoring, I score rounds with one fighter being knocked down twice as 10-7. Had I scored the 8th round 10-8, this fight would have been a draw. The punches landed totals were very close (98-89 for Frazier) so I feel the right man won this fight since Ali put Frazier down twice. In recent times, I have considered switching my scoring of such a round to 10-8 but now I think I'll stick with what I've been doing. If anyone has any input, I'm open to hearing it.

HW- Gene Tunney defeats David Tua by Unanimous Decision
Judges: 97-92, 97-91, 97-91
Each fighter wit the canvas once (Tunney in the 2nd round, Tua in the 8th) but this fight went the distance with little surprise as to the winner. Tunney dominated this fight after the 2nd round and landed 150 punches to show for his effort. Outclassed on this night, Tua could manage to land just 52 punches of his own. The Fighting Marine is now 11-0-1 (5) while Tua drops to 9-3-0 (7).

Any update of tonight's fight would not be complete without a word about the appearance of Money99. Watched closely by police, Money99 sat ringside with George Chuvalo and enjoyed the big night of fighting without incident.
