Re: Unified Boxing Federation (Glory Days Boxing)
JUNE 2003 UBF SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS
Results
MW- Ken Overlin defeats Ronnie Harris by KO at 1:44 of Round 5
It was a very close bout for 4 rounds but Overlin caught Harris with a devastating left hook to end the fight early. Overlin is 2-0-0 (2) and will fight on Tuesday Night Fights in July. Harris is now 0-2-0 (0).
MW- Rocky Graziano defeats Alan Minter by Unanimous Decision
Judges: 98-90, 100-88, 100-89
Graziano, in his UBF debut, knocked Minter down in the 4th and 6th rounds on his way to a convincing decision. For the night, Rocky landed 124 punches to Minter's 39. Minter is now 1-1-0 (0).
MW- Bernard Hopkins defeats Nigel Benn by Split Decision
Judges: 93-97, 97-94, 97-92
It's rare to have a split decision with such differing views from the judges but Hopkins was the rightful winner in this one. He held a 35-punch margin (104-69) in punches landed and was the clear winner in 6 rounds in our eyes. Hopkins is 2-0-0 (0) while Benn was the loser in his UBF debut.
HW- Max Schmeling defeats Anthony Joshua by TKO at 1:14 of Round 3
Schmeling improved to 12-2-0 (8) as one of the most underrated fighters in the UBF continued to take out opponent after opponent. Joshua falls to 7-4-1 (5) while the "Black Uhlan of the Rhine" will fight next month on Tuesday Night Fights.
HW- George Foreman defeats Cleveland Williams by TKO at 0:54 of Round 7
Avenging a disgraceful 3rd round TKO loss to Williams in August of 2000, Foreman hopes to have found himself and put the troubles that followed that loss behind him. His impressive win over Big Cat Williams tonight is a step in the right direction. Big George is now 5-5-0 (3) while Williams slips to 4-5-0 (3).
HW- Muhammad Ali defeats Joe Frazier by Unanimous Decision
Judges: 95-94, 94-93, 94-93
In another act of revenge, it was Ali serving it up in response to his September 2001 loss to Frazier. At the time, Frazier was the UBF Heavyweight Champion and he handed Ali an embarrassing 1st round TKO loss. This fight looked to be headed towards another Frazier win after the former champion scored a 3rd round knockdown of Ali. However, Ali turned the fight on it's head by scoring a pair of knockdowns of Frazier in 40 seconds in the 8th round. Ali is now 7-1-2 (1) while Smokin' Joe is 10-3-1 (7).
Full disclosure: Contrary to conventional scoring, I score rounds with one fighter being knocked down twice as 10-7. Had I scored the 8th round 10-8, this fight would have been a draw. The punches landed totals were very close (98-89 for Frazier) so I feel the right man won this fight since Ali put Frazier down twice. In recent times, I have considered switching my scoring of such a round to 10-8 but now I think I'll stick with what I've been doing. If anyone has any input, I'm open to hearing it.
HW- Gene Tunney defeats David Tua by Unanimous Decision
Judges: 97-92, 97-91, 97-91
Each fighter wit the canvas once (Tunney in the 2nd round, Tua in the 8th) but this fight went the distance with little surprise as to the winner. Tunney dominated this fight after the 2nd round and landed 150 punches to show for his effort. Outclassed on this night, Tua could manage to land just 52 punches of his own. The Fighting Marine is now 11-0-1 (5) while Tua drops to 9-3-0 (7).
Any update of tonight's fight would not be complete without a word about the appearance of Money99. Watched closely by police, Money99 sat ringside with George Chuvalo and enjoyed the big night of fighting without incident.
