July 2005 UBF Saturday Night Fights
Results

MW- Gene Fullmer defeats Joey Giambra by TKO at 2:54 of Round 4
Despite landing 34 punches to his opponent's 53, Gene Fullmer stopped Joey Giambra on Saturday night shortly after knocking him down. The loss is the first blemish to Giambra's record which now stands at 5-1-0 (1). For Fullmer, the win lefts his mark to 5-2-1 (1) and earns him a spot on next month's Monday Night card.

HW- Mickey Walker defeats Jake LaMotta by Majority Decision
Judges: 115-113, 114-114, 118-113
Mickey Walker had a cut open above his left eye in the sixth round of his Saturday bout with Jake LaMotta. The cut worsened in the tenth round, the same round in which Walker went down in what was ruled a slip. Through the course of the bout, Walker landed 128 punches to LaMotta's 105 which helped Walker eek out a majority decision over LaMotta who suffered a gash above his right eye in the third round.

The win improves the former Middleweight champ to 6-3-1 (2), while LaMotta endured his first defeat and dropped to 5-1-2 (1).

HW- George Foreman defeats James Jeffries by TKO at 0:57 of Round 5
Landing 58 punches to Mickey Walker's 35, Big George Foreman stopped the two-time former UBF Heavyweight Champion early in the fifth round for the biggest win of his career. Foreman, who will fight on Monday night in August, is now 11-6-0 (6). Jeffries dropped to 13-4-1 (5) with the loss.

Amazing that Foreman was on the cusp of being retired and now he's beaten Tyson and Jefferies and put himself in a position to fight for the belt.

Yeah. Foreman has definitely rebounded from a lot of bad luck early in his career. Now the luck seems to be with him as stopping Jeffries, especially so early, was unexpected.

I expected that fight to see Jeffries wear George out and either drop him late or win a decision.

Re: Unified Boxing Federation (Glory Days Boxing)

I received the newest card set (Supplement 1) from Glory Days Boxing yesterday and have added the new LW, WW, MW, LHW and HW fighters into the respective pools of fighters that can join the UBF in the future.

What I haven't decided is whether or not I'll do anything with the 80 fighters from the Junior divisions. The set includes 20 fighters each from the Junior Lightweight, Junior Welterweight, Junior Middleweight and Cruiserweight divisions. Some of these fighters are duplicates of fighters that are eligible for existing weight classes in the UBF (ie CW Evander Holyfield) and some are even currently active in the UBF (ie JWW Ricky Hatton).

Obviously, with such a limited number of fighters per class, there aren't enough boxers to create full divisions so I'm not sure what to do with these fighters. I've thought about considering them amateurs and holding "UBF sponsored" tournaments for them. I've also considered adding them to the undercard of UBF Monday Night Fights as "UBF Sponsored Amateur" fights being endorsed as showcases by the federation.

My gut is to either:

A) Not use them. No Need to clutter the UBF with somewhat pointless bouts.

or

B) Add them to the undercard of UBF Monday Night Fights when that particular night does not have at least 5 scheduled bouts. They would be "showcases" of amateurs in that case.

There's no need for a kneejerk decision as I wouldn't add anything until January 2006 (when I'll be adding the Featherweight Division) so I have time to decide.

I just wanted to share my thoughts here about what I'm thinking to get your thoughts on it as well. Which option (including tournaments), if any, would interest you? Would you enjoy the "showcases"? Would a tournament of these fighters be a worthwhile endeavor? Would you prefer that I just stay focused on the 6 (soon to be 7 and eventually 8) divisions of the federation and not slow things down with sideshows? Do you have an idea that I have not mentioned?

Feel free to let me know your thoughts and thank you for following along and sharing any feedback!
