The Career Of Steve Fulton(Nascar Racing 2002 Season) 2nd Attempt

I am going to do a "career" on NR2002. I have downloaded almost 1000 cars from 1997-2015 and have the car sets set up to run a "career" myself since there is only season mode on this older game. I will start out with my own upstart/sponsorless team looking to make a name for myself and get an offer to drive for an established team and/or gain sponsorship for my team.

In NASCAR the first five races of the season had provisional starting spots based on the previous years point standings. If you weren't in the top-35 in points the previous year you aren't locked into the race. Since my team is brand new we will have no points to fall back on so I will need to qualify for each race or I will simulate a DNQ(did not qualify) by retiring before the green and receive zero points. If I out qualify the last place car I make the race. After the first five races the top-35 cutoff goes to the current season's standings.

I am going to start the career on 100% difficulty. Each year it will go down 1% as a default simulating me gaining experience until I can consistently contend for championships. There may be some storylines that could cause that percentage to go back up as well.

This playthrough may not go by what happened in real life and I might make up my own story lines. For instance, drivers retiring and switching teams may not mirror real life but at the start of this all the teams/drivers I have in the roster are correct for 1997. Except my team of course which is not real.

Also to keep the races from being too long and having too many cars out or laps down I'm running 50% race length with damage turned off. A few tracks have issues with cars running into each other during a caution taking some lead cars out so I just turned the damage off to prevent this.

Edit: After season one I have decided to take race length down to 25%.

So, let's get in the time machine and travel back to when NASCAR was in the midst of it's "glory" days. When even back-marker teams had multi-million dollar companies on the sides of their cars. The stands were packed, the lights were bright, the year was 1997 and lets head to Daytona!

Sound very cool. Will definitely be keeping a eye on this.

Honestly don't remember if I ever played NR2002. Assuming I did but remember 2003 the most.

Thanks for checking it out. Yeah, 2003 is the better game and I am planning on getting it eventually. 2002 is pretty much the same game just doesn't have the amount of mods for it but it has enough to get me by. I can't stand the console NASCAR games because I was spoiled by Papyrus as a teen.

1997 NASCAR Raybestos Rookie Of The Year Contenders

15 | Larry Pearson | Bud Moore Engineering
31 | Mike Skinner | Richard Childress Racing
                40 | Robby Gordon | SABCO Racing
                83 | Steve Fulton | Fulton Motorsports
96 | David Green | American Equipment Racing

This years rookie class is headed by RCR's Mike Skinner who will be piloting the #31 Lowe's Home Improvement Chevrolet. Don't overlook Robby Gordon as he has many years of racing experience in the Indycar Series. David Green and Larry Pearson look to make their marks as well.

A young upstart from Belews Creek, NC who just won the late model championship at Caraway Speedway in Asheboro, NC is bypassing the Craftsman Trucks and Busch Series and taking his talents to the top series in NASCAR. He will be piloting the 83 for his family team which is headed by his grandfather Glenn Fulton. When asked about his goals for the year Mr. Fulton said we are just looking to make every race. He stated this year would be rough on the organization but will be worth it as a lesson for his grandson Steve.

Most veterans eye the rookies move to the top as "silly" and think he should be starting in trucks or Busch Series competition like Dale Earnhardt Jr., Matt Kenseth, Eliott Sadler and others who are sharpening their skills at the lower levels. Time will tell if the move was good or not and I can't wait to witness it.

                  1997 Season Preview

As most of the country is still experiencing cold winter weather the teams of NASCAR's Winston Cup Series make the annual trek south to Daytona Beach, Florida to kick off another season of stock car racing. The NFL just had their Super Bowl and crowned the Green Bay Packers champs to end their season. NASCAR is different, we have our "Super Bowl" to kick off the season with The Great American Race the Daytona 500. The weather is great, the teams are all eager to see if the winter testing they did will pay off this year and they can lift the Championship Trophy at Atlanta like Terry Labonte did in 1996.

This season has two new tracks on the schedule as we travel west to the brand new Texas Motor Speedway and make a stop in Fontana at California Speedway. We also get a second race in the northeast at New Hampshire Speedway. The loser in this deal is the fans of Wilkesboro, NC as NASCAR has removed the tour dates for North Wilkesboro Speedway.

Some garage area favorites heading into the season are Jeff Gordon, Dale Jarrett and 7-time champion "The Intimidator" Dale Earnhardt. Only time will tell so let's get the season kicked off with the Busch Clash at Daytona International Speedway.

*** - Replacement driver Steve Fulton filling in due to injury.

The Busch Clash is made up of the previous seasons pole sitters and past Busch Clash winners. This years race fields 18 drivers who kick off the season on the high banks at Daytona. Dale Earnhardt is the odds-on favorite to win as he pretty much dominates everything at Daytona outside of the 500. One problem though, he is by himself while other drivers have teamates that will be able to help in the draft. Hendrick, Roush and Yates all have team members a plenty to team up against The Intimidator and that's what they will have to do to dethrone Dale Earnhardt at Daytona.

If my NASCAR career write-up is half as good as your Carnegie Mellon Tartans dynasty it will be an accomplishment.

Thanks for dropping in and I look forward to doing this. I was a HUGE NASCAR fan back in the 90's and 00's so it's like I'm strolling down memory lane.

                          BREAKING NEWS!

Darrell Waltrip was taken to the infield care center after a practice crash for the NASCAR Winston Cup Series here in Daytona Beach, Florida. Reports are he suffered a dislocated shoulder when his #17 Western Auto Chevrolet flipped in practice after contact with a fellow racer.

Dick Berggren : That was a scary ride DW. How are you feeling?

Darrell Waltrip : I'm OK, just a little sore. I'm sure it will hurt worse tomorrow morning. I think I'm going to sit the Busch Clash out and get healed up for the big race.

Dick Berggren : I'm glad you are OK. We saw the team rolling out the backup car. It's a shame the fans won't get to see the car in the Busch Clash this year.

Darrell Waltrip : Well, tell the fans to cheer up because the car will be in the race tomorrow but this old man won't be behind the wheel. I'm going to let the rookie Steve Fulton get in there and see what he can do. His team has been really struggling to find speed down here but I like his attitude and drive. Not many have the guts to do what he did and jump up here with the big boys. I like that!

Dick Berggren : That is definitely a major development. You heard it here first. The rookie Steve Fulton will be participating in the Busch Clash filling in for DW as he is on the mend from his crash earlier today.

I appreciate the kind words! I'm also a big NASCAR fan, moreso in the 90s and 00s like you said, but I still follow the sport pretty regularly today. As someone who enjoys his fair share of older video games and generally nostalgic for the past, I'm really looking forward to this and seeing how the past will be rewritten!

The Intimidator does what he usually does and dominates an exhibition race at Daytona International Speedway in February. Dale Earnhardt started the race on the outside of row 3 but by lap 9 he put the GM Goodwrench Chevrolet into the wind and set sail to his 7th victory in the annual exhibition race at the world's center of racing. He was able to take the lead from young upstart Steve Fulton who was in the race as a replacement for Darrell Waltrip who was nursing a shoulder injury after a bad crash in practice. Dale Earnhardt said he would trade all his success in exhibition races at Daytona in for just one Daytona 500 victory.
