It's true but I shed a lot of cap this year and it's only a 1 year deal. I really love what Neil brings to the table and will be an excellent fit with Hendricks and Jones on a checking line. Thanks for following.

I should have a preseason wrap up posted tomorrow including an updated Team Depth Chart, Line Projections and a look at the teams Salary Cap situation.

EXPECTATIONS ARE HIGH AFTER PRESEASON SUCCESS
Neil Mackenzie - Edmonton Journal (C) 2014

The Oilers have wrapped up their preseason with a 4-1-1 record, there losses coming in the form of a 3-1 Loss to Phoenix and a 4-3 Overtime loss to San Jose. Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle led the team in points and Nick Schultz led all players with minutes logged.

The team had several rookies competing for a roster spot. Aaron Ekblad, Oscar Klefbom and Darnell Nurse were competing for a possible top 6 pairing roster spot. In the end Ekblad played the best, registering 3 assists while logging 15 minutes a game. Klefbom was assigned back to Oklahoma City and Nurse was sent back to Junior.

In the forward position, Edmonton will keep two prospects from the 2014 draft for a team tryout. Nikolaj Ehlers and Axel Blomqvist both had an excellent preseason, playing on a line with Boyd Gordon. The pair combined for 5 goals and 3 assists in 6 games while being +5. Both rookies will get a 10 day trial with the team before Murray decides if they will remain with the club for the season.

In perhaps the biggest surprise of preseason, Edmonton Goaltending prospect Niko Hovinen came into training camp in the best shape of his life. In 3 starts for Edmonton this preseason, the 26 year old Finn registered 2 Shutouts and 3 wins. His success led to a goaltending controversy as Scrivens struggled in his 2 outings giving up 4 goals and 3 goals in each of those games. In the end, Oilers management has decided to keep Hovinen on the opening roster and Scrivens will start the season in Oklahoma City.

The Oilers will begin their campaign in two days time when they have their home opener against Los Angeles. There has been no news yet from Coach Eakins on who will start the game.

According to CapGeek my current Team Salary is $52,925,000 so I'm $14,315,000 below the League Salary Cap and $4.3M below Ownerships Internal Cap.
