How do people create scenarios in a specific year?

I'm kinda losing my mind. But I don't know how people are able to upload scenarios with accurate rosters in a specific year. Not only accurate rosters, but also accurate timeline. How do y'all do it????

My routine is to finish a year's schedule (say the 1983-84 season, where the Magic-Larry Era begins), complete all offseason transactions (trades, free agency, draft, lineups, etc), then on the first day of the new season, I upload a scenario for the new season ("1984-85").

It's my way of sort of time capsuling classic teams year in, year out. So if I ever want to go back and re-play as, say, the Dale Ellis, Tom Chambers, Xavier McDaniel Sonics, hopefully I should be able to download my scenario for that year and have at it.

You recreate the real offseason every time? How do you square that with things playing out differently on the court? For instance, if Jordan gets hurt in the Finals vs. Portland, resulting in a Portland victory, maybe Drexler doesn’t ring chase with the Rockets later. I feel like literal realism would feel unrealistic in that case.

Yeah I've loved it so far, because everything feels 95 percent legit for my own liking while also allowing just enough small bits of variance to keep things sort of uniquely interesting.

I don't get too caught up in many of the why's of the the trades and moves I make. If Joe Barry Carrol gets dealt, I deal him. I'm not too phased by whether Warriors fans actually grew disgruntled with his performance on an underwhelming team or not.

On the flip side though, I do have a few exceptions I've had play out. Namely, I brought David Robinson to San Antonio the year he was drafted rather than having him serve two additional years with the Navy (I'm a big Robinson fan and thought it'd be interesting to see what'd happen if he'd debuted then). I also had Len Bias survive. And at times, I allow certain players decimated by injuries remain healthy, just to see how things otherwise may have shaken out..

Of course, as you said, that opens all sorts of sliding doors. If Robinson debuted in '87, the Spurs probably don't nab Willie Anderson and Sean Elliott in '88 and '89, two big pieces to their 90's rebuild. And if Len Bias lives, something likely needs to change sooner in Boston to give him a chance to get off the bench instead of sitting behind Larry Bird and Kevin McHale on into the 90's. But those are the things I just don't lose too much sleep over on account of just suspending disbelief and enjoying the otherwise realistic feel of it all.

Yeah, I created scenarios for 92 thru 96. I didn’t worry too much about in-season transactions but then controlled free agency and all teams in the off season to then get players on the right teams and the right draftees with the proper teams. The expansion draft in 95 was difficult.

It would take way too much time to get everything perfect.

You really had my hopes up. Until the Xbox part. I would really love to start a season from 88/89.
