Yeah, my lifelong favourite team. Been there for the ups and downs. Looking forward to running them, hopefully we can have some sustained success and get back into the playoffs.

GAME: Front Office Football Nine
In my opinion this is the best football sim there is despite some of its quirks. (For instance, although I'm using somewhat updated/modified rosters the ratings aren't all as accurate as I'd like because the game generates the ratings slightly differently every time for the sake of replayability and to replicate the unknown factor that goes into every season (Puka Nacua's season wasn't on my bingo card this preseason let's just say)).

DRAFT CLASS: Generated
Sorry if you were looking forward to Caleb Williams and Drake Maye and Marvin Harrison Jr, I don't know if there are real draft classes created yet for this game and if there are I'd rather the random route just to change it up. Also, one of the game's limitations/flaws is that the draft class doesn't show up to look at/scout until the offseason so I won't be doing running stories on prospects during the season probably (unless I can stay far enough ahead in my simming to insert them into writeups for the season).

STYLE: Varied/Creative

This dynasty will use a few different formats/styles. Sometimes there will be basic information (rosters, stats etc), sometimes recaps or article style writeups on games or off field situations, sometimes press conferences and sometimes journal entries to show/discuss the thought process of John Schneider (the GM) more casually.

FREQUENCY: Occasional
I don't intend to update this daily. Hopefully weekly on average, sometimes much more frequently and sometimes less. I want this to last and for that to happen it has to stay fun so it can't become a burden. If life gets busier updates will become fewer and farther between. My goal is to keep going, not to set some speed record then fizzle out. Don't expect constant updates. But I don't intend to abandon ship after a few weeks either.



PLAN: Observe, Analyze, Act.
Year One I will be mostly observing and reporting on the team without making big changes or being too hands on. FOF9 has incredibly detailed and realistic gameplanning options but for year one I am leaving that in the computer coach's hands. Perhaps I will eventually take over these responsibilities in future years or maybe I will leave it up to the coaches I hire. Since this season has already happened in real life (and there's no start today option - one cool thing Madden has going for it) it will be interesting to mostly observe and see how differently things shake out (will the Jets thrive with an uninjured Aaron Rodgers? What if Joe Burrow doesn't struggle with injuries all year for the Bengals? Who will have surprisingly good or bad performances? Etc.) and then take it from there. It's also worth noting in case anything goes very strangely that I have run multiple test sims with this roster and things typically come out reasonably well so if somebody sucks who should be doing well or does amazing that I wouldn't expect I'm comfortable chalking that up to random chance/aberration/etc and rolling with it. Anything can happen in the NFL.

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS 2023 Coaching Staff

Head Coach: Pete Carroll - the 71 year old bounded into training camp with his usualy energy this season and shows no sign of slowing down. He brings a positivity and enthusiasm that is infectious but some critics feel his playcalling and system have grown stale. This is a big prove it year for him and his staff. Pete is known especially for his work with the secondary and he will look to see Tariq Woolen take another step this season while also coaching up rookie Devon Witherspoon.

Offensive Coordinator: Shane Waldron - Waldron is noted for his ability to work well with younger players and for his creativity but there are legitimate knocks on his play-calling and if the season doesn't go well fans will be calling for change in this area. Waldron runs a West Coast offense and specializes in developing and utilizing tight ends.

Defensive Coordinator: Clint Hurtt - known for his excellent scouting and developing, Hurtt specializes with defensive linemen and runs a True 3-4 Defensive Front. His overall football IQ and playcalling are considered somewhat mediocre and he doesn't especially inspire his players.

Assistant Coach: Carl Smith - the 75 year old Carl Smith is regarded as one of the best at interviewing prospects and he has a sharp football mind. He isn't particularly well known for developing players but he does specialize in working with quarterbacks. He fits best with a West Coast offense. With an expiring contract this offseason it's unknown if John Schneider will keep him on staff or let him go to search for younger blood.

Head Trainer: Ivan Lewis - Lewis is great at conditioning and with only four injuries after the pre-season the Seahawks look to be in decent shape. He is not as good at strength training and his overall football IQ is unimpressive.

Pre-season has wrapped up and 53 man rosters have been announced. Seattle cut the following players to get down to the 53 man limit:

Some surprises making the roster include undrafted receiver Jake Bobo who had an impressive pre-season, Ravens fifth round pick Kyu Blu Kelly at cornerback beating out veteran Artie Burns and former starter Michael Jackson, running back Kenny McIntosh (a seventh round pick) making the team as they will run with four running backs plus a fullback in Nick Bellore and linebacker Jon Rhattigan who was expected to be a victim of the numbers game but was kept around for his special teams, experience and energy.

Star rookie Jaxon Smith-Njigba will be out with an elbow injury to start the season and is expected to miss the first 2-4 weeks. Projected starting Nose Tackle Jarran Reed will be inactive for week one, he is listed as questionable with a leg injury. Depth receiver Cody Thompson is also listed as questionable and defensive end Dre'Mont Jones is probable for week one.

TRADE: CAR acquires DT Maliek Collins, 2024 HOU 7th; HOU acquires 2024 CAR 5th, 2024 CAR 6th.

NOTABLE INJURIES:

• Arizona C Pat Elflein will miss the entire season and his career may be in doubt with a serious achilles tear.
• Baltimore will be without DE Justin Madubuike for 2-4 weeks.
• Baltimore's starting LT Ronnie Stanley should miss most or all of the season with an ankle injury that will require surgery.
• NT Michael Pierce of Baltimore will also likely miss the season
• Chargers LB Joey Bosa is expected to miss up to 14 weeks with a torn ankle ligament.
• WR Juju Smith-Schuster of the Patriots is likely to miss all of the regular season with a serious leg injury.

What kind of season will the Seahawks give us this year?




September 9th, 2023 -

As the Seahawks wind down their final practice before their meeting with the Rams tomorrow for the season opener we as fans have a lot of questions, some hope and probably even more cynicism.

How did the offseason go? Well, we stuck with Geno at QB after a surprisingly solid season from him and also kept Drew Lock around as his backup. Geno Smith could have another impressive year throwing to Lockett, Metcalf and co, provided his offensive line can keep him healthy and give him time to make his throws. Kenneth Walker III should have another dynamic season and we drafted another RB in the second round (probably too high in this journalist's opinion) in Zach Charbonnet to be the thunder to Walker's lightning. Seventh round running back Kenny McIntosh impressed enough at camp to stick around but if everyone stays healthy it's unlikely he sees many snaps. We took Jaxon Smith-Njigba in the first round, a prodigious talent who will struggle to get targets in an offense with Metcalf, Lockett and three worthy tight ends. Once he's healthy that is. Jake Bobo was a nice surprise and he made the team but he won't move the needle much in that receivers room. The Offensive Line needed more help than it got and while Lucas and Cross both have exciting potential as they enter their sophomore season they still have work to do to establish themselves as starting NFL tackles. The interior line is uninspiring as well, with mediocrity all around and really only Damien Lewis looking like a legitimate starter on a good team. Haynes and Brown are serviceable veterans but they are going to be asked to do a lot of the heavy lifting.

On the defensive side of the ball the consensus of fans and analysts is that not enough was done to improve the line. Games are won and lost in the trenches and with Edwards, Jones and Reed the Seahawks will at least be fielding a competent 3 down linemen but none of them moves the needle or dominates like you want to see in a 3-4 front and Reed is injured to start the season which will thrust either Bryan Mone or rookie Cameron Young into a starting role for opening day. Boye Mafe has taken some good steps at edge and Nwosu looks like he could have a decent season as well, but neither of them are exciting needle moving defensive players either. Darrell Taylor is a passing downs specialist who is relatively good at getting pressure but his game isn't well rounded enough to play regularly and sophomore Tyreke Smith and rookie Derick Hall have some work to do before they are ready for a consistent role. In the middle an aging Bobby Wagner will bring leadership, intelligence and competitive fire and should pack a decent punch alongside Jordyn Brooks but will teams be able to take advantage of his declining coverage skills? Devin Bush is a good insurance policy at linebacker although he may never live up to his first round pedigree. The cornerbacks look solid. Not all-world but solid and Pete has a great history of doing great things with this position group. Witherspoon will hopefully continue to develop as the season goes on and should step in alongside last year's outstanding rookie at the position Tariq Woolen. Coby Bryant looks to have earned the nickel back role and Tre Brown will be the fourth cornerback and looked very competent in pre-season. At safety Jamal Adams still looks dangerous even though injuries have clearly deteriorated his play. If he can stay healthy and keep his attitude in check he could be a difference maker for them on defense. Quandre Diggs is slowing down a bit and Julian Love really stepped up in training camp and pre-season to earn a spot ahead of Diggs. Rumours are that Diggs is not impressed with the situation, it will be interesting to monitor how the coaching staff manages him.

Basically without having made any big improvements at D-Line or O-Line this could be a team that is mired in mediocrity. PFF Ranks their roster as 26th in the league but with Geno's chemistry in the offense and Pete Carroll coach they are expected to finish higher than that. They should win at least 7 games still and maybe even push for a playoff spot but they don't scare anybody and if Pete's magic squeaks them into the Wild Card Round somehow don't expect them to go any farther than that. Unless they surprise us this year this team could be due for some bigger changes, either with the coaching staff or the roster or both. For now let's sit back and enjoy the season.

NFL Season Preview

San Francisco is the favourite to win the Super Bowl - Kyle Shanahan has a strong team on both sides of the ball with difference makers at key positions. Brock Purdy will have weapons like Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle at his disposal and their defense has Nick Bosa terrifying quarterbacks, Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw patrolling the middle of the field, Charvarius Ward shutting down top receivers and Talanoa Hufanga at safety. The development of backup runninback Elijah Mitchell and backup quarterback Brandon Allen have been big pre-season stories that just add to their overall depth as a team.

Baltimore is another team in the mix this year, led by dual threat star QB Lamar Jackson. Star LT Ronnie Stanley is out and we will see how that affects Jackson's rhythm and confidence this season. Jackson will again be throwing to star TE Mark Andrews but he has a lot better and deeper WR corps than he has had in the past as well, with Duvernay, Agholor, Bateman, OBJ and Zay Flowers all looking like capable targets. The Ravens vaunted defense is led by linebackers Roquan Smith and Patrick Queen and safeties Marcus Williams and Kyle Hamilton. They will be missing Justin Madubuike on the line to start the year as well as Nose Tackle Michael Pierce. If they can weather those injuries they have a good chance to do some damage.

The third best odds at the start of the season belong to the Buffalo Bills. Could this be the year that Josh Allen finally breaks through? Stefon Diggs may be the best receiver in the league if he can keep his focus on the field. If Von Miller stays healthy he could be a difference maker on the defensive line. The Bills boast a strong secondary, with Tre'Davious White and Taron Johnson forming a solid cornerback tandem and Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer making an effective duo at safety. Their offensive line isn't great beyond Center Mitch Morse and they will have to grow as a unit to give Josh Allen and co the best opportunity to win games

Miami is a popular choice this year, and their offense is possibly the most exciting in the league. Tyreek, Waddle, Mostert and Cedrick Wilson are all weapons for Tua Tagovailoa who is eager to prove he is who he looked to be at the start of last year. Vic Fangio commands a defense that has a strong secondary with Xavien Howard and Jalen Ramsey locking down receivers while Jevon Holland patrols at safety. Bradley Chubb should bring the heat as an edge rusher for them. Look for Mike McDaniel's squad to push the pace and play with creativity on offense as they aim for their best finish in years.

Detroit could build on last year and make some noise, surprising some people and maybe even winning a playoff game for the first time in decades. They have a solid offensive line, a great one two punch at runningback with Montgomery and first round pick Jahmyr Gibbs and a number one receiver in the reliable Amon-Ra St. Brown. The defense will depend on Aidan Hutchinson getting pressure as they don't have a lot of big names but this offense should be able to move the ball well and keep the pressure off the defense. Rookie TE Sam LaPorta earned the starting job out of camp and look for him to continue developing throughout the season.

Cincinnati has one of the top rosters in football but their weakness in the trenches, especially on defense, and Joe Mixon's nagging injury could hold them back this year. There is a general lack of cohesion in their roster this season, especially on defense, and that could limit their success as well. They have one of the best QBs in the game in Joe Burrow and he forms a dynamic duo with star WR Ja'Marr Chase while receiver Tee Higgins goes under the radar but also has gamebreaking skill and could be a WR1 on a lot of teams in this league. Logan Wilson leads their defense from the MLB position and he will have to be sharp with a rookie Jordan Battle starting at safety.

Oddsmakers are low on the Chiefs this season, with some analysts skeptical that they will even make the playoffs but Reid and Mahomes always seem to find a way. Mahomes doesn't have a lot to work with outside of top TE Travis Kelce. With a wide receiver room of MVS, Richie James, Kadarius Toney and Justin Watson that looks mediocre and a runningback tandem of Pacheco and Edwards-Helaire that doesn't really move the needle Mahomes will need to be in MVP form to carry this offense but there are few who doubt he is capable of just that. Chris Jones will play a huge role on the defensive side of the ball, he should consistently get pressure and enable Steve Spagnuolo to count on rushing the QB even with only a four man rush.

Tampa Bay doesn't look like much on paper but they have solid coaching and teamwork and one of the most cohesive rosters in the NFL. Their players play hard and work together well and that attitude and unity can sometimes lead a team on to greater things than the sum of its parts. Star NT Vita Vea was a bit banged up in pre-season but should still start in Week 1. The left side of their line looks strong with Wirfs at Tackle and Ryan Jensen at Guard. Baker Mayfield will have a couple of prime targets in Evans and Godwin but neither Chase Edmonds nor Rachaad White looked very effective in pre-season running the ball. Inside Linebackers Lavonte David and Devin White are going to be a key part of that defense while cornerback Jamel Dean locks down his side of the field and Antoine Winfield and Ryan Neal form a dangerous duo at safety.

Pre-Season Presser with Pete Carroll and John Schneider

Reporter: Pete, who impressed you the most in camp and pre-season?

Pete: Well, even though we know him well I was still super impressed with Bobby, just his attitude, leadership and compete is off the charts as always. Always pushing the guys, he's gonna be a great mentor Jordyn at linebacker and he's really going to help our run defense. We have a couple of young receivers who earned spots on our 53 man roster in Bobo and Cody Thompson, they just outworked everybody and did everything we asked them too with an awesome attitude and they're going to be great depth for us going forward.

Reporter: Do you have any comments on Jaxon Smith-Njigba and his injury?

Pete: Well, he competed and showed really well in camp, it's hard to see him hurt like this, he was really ready to go to start the year. When he gets healthy he's gonna be a great complement to D.K. and Tyler and we expect to use him a lot of different ways but right now we really want him to focus on getting healthy and being 100%. That guy is going to have a long and productive career in front of him and we want to get it started on the right foot.

Reporter: John, a lot of the media scrutinized your selection of Devon Witherspoon 5th overall. How has he looked to you and do you feel vindicated so far in drafting him ahead of other positions of greater need.

John: Yeah, well we believed he was a special player and we still do. He's looked great so far and should be a day one starter with room to improve. Devon is a motivated competitor with incredible football instincts and he is going to be a difference maker for our defense for a long time. We stand by the selection and are super pleased with how he has come along and what he's shown us so far.

Reporter: Could you also comment on complaints from the fan base that the defensive line hasn't been adequately addressed?

John: Mario Edwards and Dre'Mont Jones have both shown us everything we wanted in pre-season and I think you guys are going to be impressed with them this year. Jarran Reed is a good nose tackle and it's unfortunate he's injured but when he's ready I believe we have a very solid defensive front, especially with Nwosu and Mafe, who I think is going to take a big step this year, attacking from the edge.

Reporter: Pete, how has the offensive line come together so far? Are you confident in the group you have protecting Geno?

Pete: I'm really excited for our guys to show what they can do. It's not a lot of big name guys we have but everyone knows their job and does their part and we all support each other. Charles and Abe are great young tackles and it's awesome to be able to watch them develop and mature on a daily basis, I think soon they're both going to be stars in this league. Our offensive line is underrated this year and we're excited to prove everybody wrong.

Reporter: Is there any truth to the rumours Quandre Diggs is wanting to be traded and is disruptive in the room?

Pete: Quandre is a competitive, fiery guy and we love that. He hasn't taken it the best that he isn't going to start Week 1 but he's a leader for us and still going to be playing a role on our defense. We have full confidence that Quandre is going to give us his best and put the team first. I have a good relationship with him and we talk regularly. He'll be fine.

Reporter: Any final comments guys?

Pete: Yeah, we're just excited to get out there and play football again in front of the 12s, looking forward to it, we're going to have a fun season. See you guys out there!

Publicly I have to keep a positive face on things but I have my concerns this year. Our roster isn't strong, we haven't seen our guys progress as much in camp as I was hoping and some of our veterans are clearly slowing down.

Jamal could become a problem. I don't like his abrasive attitude and it's rubbing off on some of the younger guys. He's probably our best defensive player so there's not much I can do though. Quandre isn't happy that he isn't starting Week one and he's a vocal leader for us so I hope we can keep him in line and on board.

Without a ton of cap room I'm wondering what to do about Geno. He's going to be expensive next year but we don't really have anyone to replace him. Drew Lock doesn't cut it. Maybe we can move Lockett or Metcalf to save some salary but their bonuses will minimize our actual savings. Adams or Diggs at safety might have to go so Julian Love stepping up is a huge encouragement on that front. The media's right we have to improve in the trenches and that is probably going to take cap space we don't have right now.

I need to make some decisions about extensions eventually. All three of my interior offensive line starters are up this offseason. I need to evaluate if any of them move the needle enough to extend them and if not I need to find suitable replacements that hopefully will be upgrades. My inside linebackers all have expiring contracts as well. Do I re-sign Bobby? He's a great leader but also getting slower and probably will still want a lot of money. Are Bush or Brooks worth extending? What about Rhattigan? If I let them all walk how will we rebuild our linebacker group? Fant and Parkinson both will need new contracts but I can't afford to keep all three of our starting calibre tight ends. Let's see how Shane uses them this year and make a decision later. If he isn't using them all frequently enough maybe we can move one of them for a draft pick mid-season.

There's going to be a lot of pressure to move on from Pete if we struggle this year. Hopefully we can exceed expectations and I won't have to deal with that. It would be nice in some ways to bring in my own coach and have more full say in personnel decisions instead of running everything by Pete but we also have a great working relationship and I really appreciate him and how much he's been able to get from our guys and the culture he's built. His coordinator hires have been sloppy and I'm not very impressed with Shane or Clint so we're going to have to evaluate that this offseason as well. I'm personally leaning towards finding a coordinator who will bring in a 4-3 front instead of 3-4 but that would involve changing a lot of personnel around at this point so we'll see.

Week One, LA Rams @ Seattle Seahawks

Recap:

1st Quarter
The Rams took possession first and earned two first downs before being stopped at the Seattle 45 when Cooper Kupp dropped a pass on 3rd and 1. The Seahawks went three and out for their first drive of the year, with Geno going 3 for 3 but all the completions being short. The Rams would fair catch the Michael Dickson punt at their 28. Matt Stafford hit backup tight end Hunter Long on a playaction pass that went for nineteen yards and then on the second play of the drive Kyren Williams ran outside the right tackle with a good block and took it to the house for a 53 yard touchdown run as the Rams struck first. Seattle would start the ensuing drive from their 22. Smith would work the ball downfield, getting first down runs from Charbonnet and Walker and hitting Jake Bobo for a 24 yard first down to get to the Rams 29. After a sack on first down and a Kenneth Walker run around the left side that was stuffed for only one yard the Seahawks were facing 3rd and 14 from the LA 33. Geno stepped up and hit D.K. Metcalf for 32 yards and a first down at the one. He went back to Metcalf the next play for touchdown to tie the game up at 7. On the Rams next drive they ran Puka Nacua on a reverse on 2nd and 3 and Devon Witherspoon sniffed it out and shut it down for a four yard loss. Stafford hit receiver Tutu Atwell for a first down on the next play to keep the drive alive. A couple big runs got the Rams into Seahawks territory with a first down to start the second quarter.

2nd Quarter
Stafford looked to be hitting his stride, throwing first downs to Tutu Atwell and Tyler Higbee in his first two plays of the quarter. On the next play Riq Woolen took an unnecessary roughness call to move the chains and give the Rams a 1st and 10 from the Seattle 11. A sack by Mario Edwards and an offensive holding call the next play pushed the Rams back to the 27 for a second and very long. They would move the ball forward the next couple plays but not enough for a first down and would settle for a Brett Maher field goal to take the lead. The next Seahawks drive saw Lockett catch a first down pass, Kenneth Walker III run for a first down and then a 48 yard pass to D.K. Metcalf to put Seattle at the LA 4 yard line. After Walker was stuffed on an inside run play Geno Smith went to the air on second down and connected with Jake Bobo for the touchdown. Seahawks in the lead 14-10. The Rams would go 3 and out with Seattle corner Tre Brown breaking up a third down pass intended for Cooper Kupp. The Seahawks would go 3 and out as well in their next drive, with Geno Smith being sacked on 3rd down. Puka Nacua was banged up earlier but was back in the game and caught a 14 yard pass on 3rd down to keep the Rams drive going. Matthew Stafford hit Cooper Kupp on a 57 yard pass play. Kupp earned 27 of those yards after the catch, getting to the Seattle 3 yard line. Stafford went back to Kupp for the 3 yard touchdown pass to give the Rams the lead back, 17-14. With two minutes left in the half both defenses stiffened up and held until the end of the half.

3rd Quarter
Seattle started with the ball and big plays to Will Dissly (40 yards) and Tyler Lockett (16 yards) led them into scoring position. After getting a first down at the LAR 2 yard line Geno Smith found his favourite target, D.K. Metcalf, for the score to put Seattle up 21-17. The Seahawks defense forced the Rams to punt after only four plays and Seattle got the ball back on their own 35. Deejay Dallas and then Will Dissly both converted 3rd downs with clutch catches to keep the drive going into LA territory and on a first down from the Rams 36 Geno threw a screen to D.K. Metcalf who did the rest, going all the way to the end zone to give the Seahawks a 28-17 lead. The Rams would again go three and out after a third down screen pass to Kyren Williams was blown up five yards in the backfield by Quandre Diggs. Taking the ball at their 36 Seattle would again drive down the field with a steady diet of Kenneth Walker and Deejay Dallas running the ball and moving the sticks. From the Rams 45 yard line Geno and D.K. Metcalf hooked up for three straight completions, the final one being a ten yard touchdown as Seattle moved into a commanding 35-17 lead. The Seahawks defense forced a three and out but on the punt return Deejay Dallas fumbled the ball and Ronnie Rivers recovered it for Los Angeles at the Seattle 44. After a big sack by Dre'Mont Jones the Rams found themselves in second and long but an unnecessary roughness call on Mario Edwards gave them a first down at the 34 on the very next plass. A 27 yard completion to Tyler Higbee set the Rams up with 1st and goal at the 7.

4th Quarter
Three straight runs got the Rams to a 4th and goal on the 1 yard line. They ran a QB sneak and Matt Stafford got into the end zone to make the score 35-24 for Seattle. Geno Smith and the Seahawks offense wouuld start from their 25 after a touchback on the kickoff. They methodically marched down the field, their biggest play of the drive a 17 yard catch by Noah Fant, and were eventually stopped at the 2 after two tries on second and third down from the four failed to punch it in. They settled for a Jason Myers field goal to go up 38-24 and make it a two touchdown game with 6:52 to go. The Rams got nowhere, gaining two yards in four plays on their next possession, turning it over on downs after Riq Woolen deflected a pass intended for Cooper Kupp. The Seahawks kept the ball on the ground and ended up adding another field goal, 41-24. Los Angeles got the ball down seventeen with 2:20 to play. They battled hard to drive it down the field quickly but Seattle gave up only one play over ten yards, an 18 yard completion to Puka Nacua, and the Rams ran out of time without scoring.

FINAL SCORE: Seattle 41, LA Rams 24

Seattle gave up 101 yards to Kyren Williams on only 11 carries but they held Matthew Stafford to 188 yards passing, going 21-34. Cooper Kupp was absolutely shut down, largely by Tariq Woolen, as he was targeted 10 times but caught only two passes (although one of those catches was 57 yards and the other was a touchdown). Wagner had 5 tackles and an assist, Woolen had 5 tackles and 3 assists. Quandre Diggs, playing almost exclusively on passing downs, was credited with 2 tackles for a loss. Mario Edwards and Dre'Mont Jones both registered a sack. Nick Bellore had 3 special teams tackles. Abe Lucas struggled in pass protection, allowing 2 sacks and a hurry in 39 plays. Damien Lewis was solid run blocking, making 3 of 5 key run block opportunities. He also allowed only one hurry in 39 pass plays. Geno Smith completed 28 of 35 for 386 yards and 5 touchdowns. D.K. Metcalf caught 13 passes for 191 yards and 4 touchdowns, an historic game for both of them as they put the league on notice.

Week 2 Pre-Game Press Conference

Reporter: Pete, the oddsmakers have your team as four point underdogs going into this matchup, do you feel that's fair?

Pete: Well, I have a lot of respect for Dan Campbell and he has his team playing good football but, well, we've always been underrated. Geno, Geno's an amazing quarterback in his league, you saw that last week and you guys don't really give him his credit but especially with the talented guys he's throwing to out there, I expect he's going to execute another excellent game for us.

Reporter: Analysts say that Detroit has the significant advantage in the trenches, what do you have to say about that?

Pete: They can say what they want, that's why we play games. Our guys don't get the credit they deserve but one game at a time we're going to show you who we are and maybe after a few weeks some of those analysts will change their tune. We've been working hard all week in practice and our guys are fired up for the challenge.

Reporter: Abe Lucas really struggled in pass protection last week, are you going to be doing anything to insulate him or how do you see him correcting that this week with the likes of Aiden Hutchinson on the pass rush?

Pete: We've been working with Abe all week, Shane might have some more help with backs staying in to block if we need that but we're confident. This line is a unit and if we all work together and do our job Geno is going to have the time he needs to make his throws and we should see a lot of success.

Reporter: Just one last question, coach. D.K. obviously was amazing last week, do you expect Aaron Glenn and his defense to focus on him and if they do how will you counter that?

Pete: D.K. was lights out unbelievable. He's a physically dominant receiver, one of the best in the league I think, and even if they want to focus on him, double him I think he can still get his touches and make his plays. But we have a talented group catching the ball and if they focus on D.K. we can spread it around to a lot of the other skill players we have who can also make plays. We're going to be hard to defend and we're going to be ready to compete tomorrow. Thank you.

1st Quarter
Seahawks take the opening kickoff and start at their 25. Second play from scrimmage is a 35 yard pass to Cody Thompson down at the Detroit 41 yard line. On 2nd and 2 Kenneth Walker III runs outside the right tackle for ten yards and a first down at the Detroit 23. After a first down catch by Fant the Hawks have a first and goal at the ten. Walker catches a pass for 8 yards but is stopped short of the end zone. Charbonnet tries to take it around the left end on second down and is stopped for no gain. On 3rd and goal from the two it's a screen pass to Metcalf and he battles his way into the endzone as the Seahawks go up 7-0. A 3 and out for the Lions sees Seattle get the ball back but despite a first down catch by Lockett they aren't able to generate anything further and have to punt it away. Michael Dickson's punt bounces into the end zone for a touchback. Riq Woolen makes a huge sack on third down but Mafe is offside on the play, giving Detroit a fresh set of downs. They work it down the field, with Gibbs and Montgomery tag teaming their way to a second and one at the Seattle 45. Goff throws a long pass on second down that is batted down by Jamal Adams and David Montgomery is stuffed for no gain on third and one. On fourth down they go for the sneak and Dre'Mont Jones makes the stop for no gain as the ball goes to Seattle on downs. The Seahawks can't make anything of it and on third and six Nick Bellore is in at fullback and misses a block allowing a sack and Dickson punts it 48 yards. The Lions start their drive from their own fifteen.

2nd Quarter
On a third down inside their own 20 the Lions get a clutch third down reception from rookie TE Sam LaPorta to move the chains. On the next set of downs a 19 yard pass to TE James Mitchell gets the Lions a first down near midfield. Jameson Williams gets them another first down with an 11 yard reception. A short pass to LaPorta on first down is blown up in the backfield by Witherspoon but on second and long St. Brown makes a 14 yard catch and Jahmyr Gibbs runs for the first down on third and one. The Seattle defense holds strong, with Coby Bryant defending a third down pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown and the Lions attempt a 50 yard field goal that misses wide to the left. After a three and out Seattle's special teams comes up big with Michael Dickson punting it 51 yards out of bounds at the Detroit four yard line. Myles Adams is flagged for face masking on a third down stop, giving the Lions fresh life. On a 2nd and 7 Sam LaPorta catches a short pass over the middle and turns it into a 19 yard first down. On a 3rd and 1 at the Seattle 43 Jahmyr Gibbs runs inside the left tackle for seven yards, fumbles it but Detroit recovers with a first down. Goff hits WR Marvin Jones for 23 yards on second down and then from the Seattle 12 he throws a completion to TE Brock Wright for the touchdown to even things up at seven with 2:26 left in the half. After another Seattle drive sputters out with just one first down Michael Dickson punts it 51 yards to the Detroit 5 yard line where it is downed by Jon Rhattigan. Detroit runs the rest of the half out on the ground and we go to the second half tied 7-7.

3rd Quarter
Detroit gets the ball to start but goes three and out. DeeJay Dallas fair catches it at the 14. Dallas comes in for third and six and gets the toss outside right, gaining 16 yards. Charles Cross pulled all the way over and made the key block to spring him. Lockett beat his man cleanly to get another first down, making Romeo Okwara look foolish on the play and also drew an unnecessary roughness penalty at the end. On 3rd and 3 from the Detroit 26 it was Lockett again with a 16 yard reception for first down, all of it after the catch on a screen pass. Geno then hit Metcalf for a seven yard gain on first down to set up second and goal from the three. Kenneth Walker III ran behind Right Tackle Abe Lucas and scored the three yard touchdown. Seattle 14, Detroit 7. Detroit was determined to stay in the game and drove down the field, getting a 33 yard catch from St. Brown and a 12 yard run from Montgomery. At the Seattle 22 on fourth down they proceeded to take two straight penalties pushing them back to the 32 but Badgley still hit the 49 yard field goal to make it 14-10 for Seattle. Seattle started their next drive in rough shape, at 3rd and 13 on their first set of downs when Geno threw a bomb to Cody Thompson for 39 yards with a face masking penalty at the end to boot. Deejay Dallas got them a first down inside the twenty with a six yard run on third and three. Geno passed to Noah Fant for nine yards on first down and from the two yard line Kenneth Walker III ran it into the endzone behind Phil Haynes. Seattle 21, Detroit 10.

4th Quarter
Detroit started the final quarter with a 3rd and 4 but took a holding penalty to push them back to 3rd and 14. Despite an 11 yard pass to Montgomery they would be forced to punt it away. The 62 yard punt enabled a 20 yard return by DeeJay Dallas to start the Seahawks on their own 34. Seattle kept the ball mostly on the ground but sustained a drive with consistent gains and a couple big passes to Lockett and to Metcalf. From the 3 yard line Geno Smith passed to TE Will Dissly for the touchdown as Seattle would go up 28-10. Down by three scores the Lions pushed the ball downfield but were called for holding on a first down at midfield. They struggled to bounce back with three straight short plays and then on fourth and long they went for it but Darrell Taylor rushed Jared Goff's throw and it fell incomplete. Seattle took over on downs and immediately Geno Smith hit Tyler Lockett on a playaction pass for 41 yards and a touchdown. Seattle 35, Detroit 10. Detroit worked the ball back down the field on a successful but slow moving drive. On a 3rd and 4 from the Seattle 29 Jared Goff's pass to St. Brown was intercepted by Julian Love. The Seahawks ran out the rest of the clock with DeeJay Dallas getting a couple of key rushing first downs to keep the drive going and the clock moving.

Final Score: Seattle 35, Detroit 10.

Geno Smith was the player of the game, going 20-26 for 281 yards with 3 touchdowns and no interceptions. Detroit did succeed in limiting Metcalf's touches but Smith successfully spread the ball around, using Tyler Lockett effectively. Lockett caught all six of his targets for 112 yards and a touchdown. DeeJay Dallas had an impressive game with 61 yards on ten carries. Seattle held Jared Goff to an 81.8 Rating, he went 30-43 for 243 yards with a touchdown and an interception. LaPorta caught eight passes on eight targets for 49 yards for Detroit. Seattle's Offensive Line was stellar, with second year tackles Lucas and Cross allowing no pressures and Aidan Hutchinson kept from getting a single pressure all game. Neither team was able to generate much of a pass rush, with both teams combining for only six pressures and Detroit DT Isaiah Buggs with the lone sack of the game. CB Cameron Sutton had an excellent game for Detroit, allowing no catches and defending two passes. Tariq Woolen allowed 3 receptions while defending two passes for Seattle. Devon Witherspoon allowed 5 catches and looked suspect in coverage but he did make six tackles including one for a loss. Jamal Adams led the team with 11 tackles and 3 assists.

Preview:

One of the big storylines here is going to be the injuries the Panthers are trying to battle through. Everybody deals with them in the NFL but the injury bug has certainly bit Carolina hard early on this season. Colt McCoy, signed in pre-season, stepped in to start week 2 after Dalton lost the opener and he impressed, leading the Panthers to a 41-16 victory but sustaining an achilles injury in the game. Both their starting guards are out. D.J. Chark is their number two receiver and he won't be suiting up. Xavier Woods is their best safety, Derrick Brown their top D-Lineman. Starting NT Shy Tuttle will play but he's banged up as well. Meanwhile the Seahawks are very healthy. Nwosu is banged up a bit. Smith-Njigba is still not quite 100% but he will make his season debut. Seattle coaching staff have said they are going to play it by ear and see how he's feeling as the game goes along and they won't give him too many snaps if he doesn't seem up to it.

Another storyline to watch will be the Seahawks anemic pass rush (2 sacks through 2 games, tied for 27th in the NFL) going up against Carolina's abysmal pass blocking. The Panthers have surrendered a league worst 12 sacks through two games. Missing their starters at guard plays a big part of that, you can't just slap together an ad-hoc offensive line in this league and expect to have much success. Boye Mafe has been coming on and looking better in each of the two games he's played this year, look for him to maybe step up even more and take advantage of some mismatches. Seattle's two sacks have come from the defensive ends Mario Edwards and Dre'Mont Jones and with the Panthers interior line rolling with two backup guards maybe they are the benefactors.

A good matchup to keep an eye on this game will be Seattle's dual threat at wide receiver, Metcalf and Lockett, going up against two good cornerbacks in Jaycee Horn and Jeremy Chinn. Carolina has some solid depth as well with former first rounder C.J. Henderson and nickel back Troy Hill ready to matchup against Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Cody Thompson.

Andy Dalton won the starting job out of camp, breeding a lot of controversy as some fans want to see first overall pick Bryce Young starting right away. After Dalton lost in the opener veteran Colt McCoy took over and led them to a week 2 victory before being injured, and although moving to Young was an option Coach Frank Reich is still taking the patient route but we'll see how long that lasts if Dalton struggles.

Look out for Kenneth Walker III today, he may be poised for a big game. He hasn't had a really explosive game yet although he's been steady and punched in two touchdowns. With heavy rain forecasted for tomorrow both teams may shy away from the air game a little and keep it on the ground more. Both teams have solid depth running the ball, Seattle has three backs in Walker, Charbonnet and Dallas that they trust and the Panthers are confident handing the rock to any of Miles Sanders, Chuba Hubbard or Raheem Blackshear.

The spread is at four and it should be a safe bet to take the Seahawks at that number. With Carolina banged up and Seattle rolling with Geno Smith carving up defenses to the tune of 667 yards and 8 touchdowns with no picks yet through two weeks it could be a blowout really quick unless Ejiro Evero and his defense can find a way to slow them down.

1st Quarter
Seahawks get first possession. First play from scrimmage is a 27 yard run by Kenneth Walker III. After his next two runs are stopped for a total of 2 yards Geno throws his first pass of the game on 3rd and 8 and completes it to Nick Bellore for the first down. On 3rd and 5 from the Panthers 33 Geno throws to Metcalf but the ball is slippery and the wind is gusty and the pass is incomplete. Jason Myers attempts a 50 yard field goal but with the wind it hits the left upright. The Panthers run three straight times to end up at 4th and 1 on their 49. Miles Sanders takes the handoff and tries to take it inside the RG but Cameron Young steps in and stuffs him for no gain, assisted by Mafe. Unfortunately Seattle DE Mario Edwards went down with what looks like a very serious injury on the play but the Panthers will turn it over on downs. Big stop by the Seattle defense. After runs by Walker and Charbonnet Geno throws on third and three but his pass to Will Dissly is batted away by Caroline defensive back Jeremy Chinn and Michael Dickson comes out to punt it. His punt gets away from him in the wind and ends up a touchback. Carolina picks up their first first down of the game when Andy Dalton hits Hayden Hurst on 3rd down for 16 yards. On 3rd and 2 from their 47 Carolina calls a playaction pass but Andy Dalton's throw to Chuba Hubbard goes awry due to the conditions and they are forced to punt. Johnny Hekker nails it, punting it fifty yards as the Panthers down it on the Seattle 3. Great special teams work. Seattle goes 3 and out and Dickson's punt is returned 17 yards by Laviska Shenault to the Seattle 35. Carolina will be calling their first offensive play in Seattle territory of the game. Chuba Hubbard would get them a first down with a 12 yard run on 2nd and 10. 3 more runs for a total 6 yards culminate in a 34 yard field goal attempt for Eddy Pineiro but he misses wide left. Seattle dodges a bullet there. The Seahawks offense again sputters with another three and out and Dickson booms a 59 yard punt that is run back only 6 yards by Shenault before Nick Bellore takes him down. Carolina starts their drive from their own 15. A 6 yard pass to Tommy Tremble and a 1 yard run from Sanders sets them up for 3rd and 3 to start the next quarter.

2nd Quarter
Devin Bush makes the stop in the backfield on 3rd down and Hekker punts it 36 yards to the Seahawks 43 yard line. After two plays Seattle faces a 3rd and 3 from midfield and Geno slings it 50 yards to D.K Metcalf in the endzone for the first score of the game. Seattle 7, Carolina 0. After a three and out the Panthers punt it back to Seattle and they start their next drive from their own 24. On third and three DeeJay Dallas runs outside for 13 yards to keep the drive going, with Noah Fant springing him with a key block. Their next set of downs Geno keeps it for the quarterback sneak on 3rd and 1 to move the chains. A 9 yard run by Walker on 1st down and an 8 yard run by DeeJay Dallas set up by a great block by pulling guard Phil Haynes gets them another first down at the Carolina 28. On second down Geno throws a short pass to Will Dissly who gains ten yards after the catch for a 16 yard completion and a first down. Seattle would be stymied their next three plays and forced to kick a 30 yard field which is good to go up 10-0. The Panthers next drive would get one first down before being stopped and forced to punt yet again. After a holding penalty Seattle would find themselves in 2nd and 18 from their own 13. They call a playaction and Geno throws to Metcalf but cornerback Troy Hill intercepts it at the 26 and runs it in for the pick six. Seattle 10, Carolina 7. Geno's first interception of the season. Seattle gets the ball with 2:35 to play in the half. Geno gets a first down with a 14 yard scramble. After the two minute warning he hits Lockett for 16 yards. On 2nd and 6 from the Carolina 39 Geno Smith hits Metcalf on the playaction pass for 32 yards. With 50 seconds left and at the 7 yard line Geno throws a short pass to Lockett who beats a defender after the catch to get into the end zone. On the extra point attempt a poor snap from long snapper Chris Stoll threw off the kick and Myers shanked it wide left. Seattle 16, Carolina 7.

3rd Quarter
Carolina's first possession fizzles after one first down. A sack by edge rusher Tyreke Smith set them back nine yards and they couldn't make it up and had to punt it. Johnny Hekker kicked a near perfect ball and his teammates made sure to down his 61 yard punt at the Seattle two. Two running plays got nowhere and on 3rd and 10 from his own two Geno Smith dropped back and threw his second pick six of the game, this time it was Jaycee Horn intercepting a pass intended for Cody Thompson. Seattle 16, Carolina 14. With the ball back Seattle's offense was looking for redemption and drove it methodically down the field to set up a first and goal from the seven. Geno would find receiver Cody Thompson in the end zone for a touchdown and Seattle goes up 23-14. Seattle's defense would force a punt from the Seattle 44 on the next drive and the Seahawks would start from their 7. The first play of the drive saw Kenneth Walker break through on a run up the middle behind a key block by Damien Lewis. Walker gained 32 yards on the play. Seattle's drive would be stopped after a holding penalty and a sack set up a 3rd and 26. Smith simply handed the ball to Dallas for a three yard inside run and they trotted out the punt team.

4th Quarter
Three straight incompletions from Dalton led to another Panthers punt and Seattle would start their next drive from their own 17. They marched it downfield to the Carolina 35 where they benefitted from a fourth down penalty by the Panthers to get a fresh set of downs in the red zone. Another 4th down penalty gave them another new start, this time from the 8 but three straight runs, one from each running back, failed to punch it in and Jason Myers hit the 22 yard chip shot. Seattle 26, Carolina 14. The Panthers could only muster a single first down on their next drive before turning it over on downs. Seattle would get the ball with 4:42 to play and successfully ran out the with a steady diet of run earning 3 first downs and getting another one by penalty.

Final Score: Seattle 26, Carolina 14.

With no passing attack Hubbard and Sanders combined for 68 yards on the ground in 20 carries between them. Seattle dominated on the ground, getting 109 yards from Walker and 88 from Dallas, and through the air, with Geno going 18-26 for 220 yards, 3 touchdowns, 2 interceptions and a 101.4 QB Rating. Metcalf caught 6 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown. Carolina S Vonn Bell had 13 tackles and 3 assists. Darrell Taylor had good game rushing the QB for Seattle, getting a sack, a blocked pass and hurry for three pressures on 17 rushes. Dre'Mont Jones and Mike Morris both had 2 hurries as well. Jamal Adams and Julian Love broke up three passes between them and allowed only one catch and Devon Witherspoon allowed zero receptions. Bobby Wagner also had a good game in coverage, knocking a pass down and allowing no receptions his way. Phil Haynes had an impressive game, with 8 key run blocks in 12 opportunities, a pancake and no pressures allowed in 27 pass plays.
