    Dolphins Start 2024 Training Camp

Head coach Mike McDaniel and players reported for Day 1

The Miami Dolphins are back, with their 2024 training camp officially underway.

Third-year head coach Mike McDaniel, his staff, and players reported to Baptist Health Training Complex in Miami Gardens for the official start of Dolphins training camp ahead of the 2024 season. There was a lot of excitement on Day 1, as is customary, but the intensity is sure to ramp up with each passing day.

"You can tell by all the smiles, and fresh sneakers, that it's like the first day of school around here," said the always-quirky McDaniel. "But the hard work is just beginning, and we have a long way to go to get to where we want to get to."

Dolphins Bring Back Cornerback Xavien Howard

The veteran free agent returns on a one-year deal

Xavien Howard (83 OVR) will be a Miami Dolphin in 2024, after all.

The Dolphins announced that they have used part of their $18.1M in available cap to sign Howard, the free agent cornerback who was released back in March after eight seasons with the organization.

Howard, who was short on suitors this offseason, agreed to a one-year deal worth $2.55M.

"Xavien is just excited to be back, especially with training camp having just started," said the 31-year-old Howard in the third-person. "There is no doubt I will be ready for the start of the season."

Report: Linebacker Shaquil Barrett Unhappy With Dolphins

The offseason signing is reportedly displeased with his role

Shaquil Barrett's (81 OVR) honeymoon phase with the Miami Dolphins did not last very long.

Barrett is reportedly unhappy in training camp over how he is being used by the Dolphins. The 31-year-old offseason addition has been taking snaps with the second linebacker unit, leaving him frustrated to the point that he has demonstratively expressed his displeasure on more than one occasion at practice in recent days.

"Everything is fine. There are no issues," said head coach Mike McDaniel. "It is preseason and guys are fighting for spots. Naturally all the players will want to push for more. That is perfectly normal in the National Football League."

Dolphins' Kendall Lamm Ruled Out Of Preseason Opener

The veteran tackle sprained his wrist in practice

The Miami Dolphins will be without one of their veteran offensive linesman in the upcoming preseason opener.

Kendall Lamm (69 OVR) has been ruled out of the home exhibition vs. the Atlanta Falcons after spraining his right wrist in practice. The 32-year-old tackle's injury is not deemed to be severe, but the Dolphins are sitting him as a precaution.

"The official diagnosis is that Kendall is out for one week," said head coach Mike McDaniel. "He will miss the game against the Falcons, which he is bummed about, but he needs a few days to heal."

              Preseason Week 1:
              Atlanta Falcons 14-33 Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins' defense led the way in the preseason opener

The Miami Dolphins are off to a winning start in the 2024 preseason -- and they have their defense to thank in large part for that.

Led by a strong performance from linebacker Anthony Walker Jr (78 OVR), the Dolphins defeated the Atlanta Falcons 33-14 at home at Hard Rock Stadium in the teams' first exhibition of the year. The Miami starters played in just the opening quarter, but the defense as a whole stood tall by recording five sacks, forcing two turnovers, and making another key stop to prevent a score at the end of the first half.

Walker Jr had a big night with 12 total tackles and two fumble recoveries, the first of which he returned 80 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.

On offense, backup quarterback Mike White (66 OVR) had a nightmare game. White threw a Pick Six and two other interceptions, all three of which were to Falcons safety Dane Cruikshank (69 OVR), before being replaced by Skylar Thompson (65 OVR). Dolphins kicker Josh Sanders (76 OVR) made all four of his field goals.

"It was awesome for the guys to get back out there after so many weeks of hard work," said Miami head coach Mike McDaniel. "A lot of good stuff was on display for this being the first game of preseason, especially defensively, and now we keep ramping up for the start of the season."

                  Preseason Week 1 Takeaways:
                  Atlanta Falcons 14-33 Miami Dolphins

De'Von Achane was one of the highlights in the preseason win

The Miami Dolphins won their preseason opener at home vs. the Atlanta Falcons.

Here are three takeaways from the 33-14 victory:

Defense, LB Anthony Walker Jr stand tall

The defensive unit set the tone in the victory, limiting the Falcons to one offensive touchdown while recording five sacks and two turnovers off of fumbles. The defense also made three stops in the red zone, including one at the end of the first half to force the clock to expire before the Falcons could score to get within reach and another that led to an 80-yard fumble return for a touchdown.

Anthony Walker Jr (78 OVR) was the defensive player with that score and he finished the game with a game-high 12 total tackles and two fumble recoveries, demonstrating the type of focus and determination that might just allow him to take the next step in his career this year.

One question that remains, however, is the status of outside linebacker Shaquil Barrett (81 OVR), who did not suit up due to mysterious reasons that were not clarified postgame by head coach Mike McDaniel.

De'Von Achane impresses in RB2 role

De'Von Achane (82 OVR) ran well for 66 yards with the second offensive unit, averaging 7.3 yards a carry on his nine attempts in addition to making two catches for 21 yards. His speed caused Atlanta all sorts of problems, especially on runs to the outside, but he also showed he could run between the tackles on his short-yardage touchdown. If he keeps this up, he might really push incumbent halfback Raheem Mostert (86 OVR) for the starting role.

                  Mike White struggles as QB2

Mike White (66 OVR) somewhat surprisingly beat out Skylar Thompson (65 OVR) for the back-up quarterback spot during training camp, but questions about that position will abound after his poor performance.

White looked out of sorts during his time on the field, struggling to make his reads en route to throwing three interceptions to eagle-eyed Falcons free safety Dane Cruikshank (69 OVR). Those picks resulted in Thompson checking into the game earlier than planned and could have allowed Atlanta to get back into things if not for the resolute defense, leaving plenty of concern for McDaniel with the regular season fast approaching.

Dolphins Trade Disgruntled Shaquil Barrett To Buccaneers

Miami received a 2025 third-round pick in exchange

The Miami Dolphins' marriage with outside linebacker Shaquil Barrett (81 OVR) was a short one.

The Dolphins traded Barrett to the Buccaneers in exchange for a third-round draft pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. The 31-year-old Barrett, who did not dress in the preseason opener due to mysterious reasons, was unhappy with his role after joining the Dolphins for training camp following his spring arrival as a free agent.

"The reports about his feelings with us were ultimately true," said Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel. "He did not want to be here, and we do not want to keep anyone here who does not want to be here even if we would have liked him to maintain as part of our plans.

"We feel we got a good return for him, and we will have another move to announce soon."

Dolphins Reunite With Free Agent Linebacker Emmanuel Ogbah

The veteran returns for a fifth season in South Florida

The Miami Dolphins made it clear they had a move lined up in the aftermath of the Shaquil Barrett trade.

Well, that move has brought back a familiar face.

The Dolphins have signed free agent outside linebacker Emmanuel Ogbah (75 OVR) to a one-year deal worth $4.75 million. Ogbah had spent the last four seasons in Miami but was cut in the spring to create more cap space, some of which has now been used to sign him as a replacement for recently-traded pass rusher Shaquil Barrett.

"This has been home for so long so I am delighted that we could work something out for my return," said the 30-year-old Ogbah. "I have been staying ready, working out on my own and honestly I feel good. I cannot wait to get going."

Dolphins Add Free Agent Quarterback Ryan Tannehill

The veteran signs up for a second stint with the AFC East team

Concerns at backup quarterback after some shoddy preseason play has led the Miami Dolphins to a surprise reunion with a recognizable figure.

The Dolphins have agreed to a deal with free agent Ryan Tannehill (70 OVR), the 36-year-old quarterback who previously played with the organization from 2012-2018 after being selected by Miami as an early first-round pick. Tannehill signed a one-year deal worth $1.95 million, and is expected to fill the primary backup quarterback role behind starter Tua Tagovailoa.

"I am buzzing to be back here in Miami," said Tannehill. "It might be in a different role and I will have to pick a different number, but I look forward to helping this team in any way that I can."

                            Preseason Week 2:
                            Washington Commanders 26-17 Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins offense sputtered in a rainy home loss that included a Terron Armstead injury

The Miami Dolphins increased their starters' workloads, but that was not enough to prevent more offensive woes that included a concerning injury to a team leader.

The Dolphins (1-1) could not get much going offensively and fell for the first time in this preseason by way of a rainy 26-17 home loss to the Washington Commanders (1-1) at Hard Rock Stadium. Miami's offense sputtered throughout and despite playing the starters the entire first half, finishing the game with 227 yards in comparison to Washington's 338.

Making matters worse was the second-quarter exit of captain and veteran left tackle Terron Armstead (92 OVR), who suffered a dislocated elbow. There was no immediate timetable for his recovery.

The Dolphins defense recorded four sacks, including 1.5 from red-hot linebacker Anthony Walker Jr (78 OVR), but gave up a pair of touchdown passes to Commanders backup quarterback Marcus Mariota (67 OVR) after halftime. Mariota was surgical, completing 10 of his 11 passes, while kicker Lucas Havrisik (75 OVR) made all four of his field goals vs. a Miami team that struggled to match that offensive play.

"This was a good test for us," said Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel. "There is some stuff to clean up on both sides of the ball, but that is what preseason is all about. We will work on addressing those things, and continue to get better before the games that truly matter."
