I am back with MLB the Show after a couple of years off and I am very excited to play it again.
I decided to pick the Marlins. I had hesitation with Athletics and Blue Jays. I was close to go Toronto but finally i decided that I wanted a game based on draft and players development rather than just picking the best FAs years in and years out.
The Marlins have the smallest budget of the league, a fairly weak lineup but a pretty good pitching staff, at least when it comes to starters bullpen is another story.
Game setup
For the gameplay I am using All star base with few "homemade" adjusted sliders (i may make a post with them).
For the roster I have used FranchiseGuy roster. I wanted to start at game release and did not want to waste a month or 6 weeks at the moment i am the most excited to play the game. So it looked like a great compromise.
The most challenging part for any MLB the Show game is to balance two things which are very hard to balance:
- By default I am an "every pitch of every game" guy, but if i do as such i play 1 season in 1 year... so i never go to season 2 especially now that the game does not support save porting from one version to the next one.
- You need to develop players and improve the roster and that require multiple seasons...
Baseball is an attrition game, the season is 162 games long and the rotation has 5 spots. I used to loose immersion and interest when i was simulating games.
So this is my new approach which i am testing with this save.
First, I will play every pitches of every games for:
- Season and home openers
- Then, i play about 4-5 games a month, I balance starters, home vs road and i pick away game in parks i dont want to miss.
- (if one day) Comes PO i likely will turn to every pitches of every game.
- I would play as well games when i have a prospect getting his debut.
Then, for games that I am not playing I am using quick manage. And actually it has been fairly exciting so far. It allows me to manage specific innings and bullpen and eventually substitution. A bit like a game manager mode.
I never simulate games. I tested a few player lock but i dont like it. For me either i play it all or I manage nothing in between.

Roster wise this game will be based on very conservative management.
No crazy trades (i hate trades), no big FA (we dont have budget) so it will be all on players developments and acquisition of players that other team do not want.
This first season is all about assessing who are the players we are going to be part of the project from current roster.
I believe the roster has few interesting talents which could rise.
The main asset is our rotation led by former Cy young winner Sandy Alcantara who lacked consistency in past two seasons battling injuries.
But I feel our rotation fairly good.
The bullpen is just awful. Bender is probably the only reliable reliever in the roster right now. So we need to acquire arms.
For the lineup, first Edwards is the obvious offensive talent but his fielding is too weak to play short stop for me. He will be used as primary DH with playing time at 2B and eventually SS in absence of a better alternative.
Otto Lopez is very serviceable player solid in defense and offense and who can play multiple position.
Then, Griffin Conine for me is an obvious talent in this roster. I am more reserved for Conor Norby who is often described as a very promising player. Jonah Bride, Diane Myers and Jesus Sanchez are the other folks i foresee as interesting in this lineup.
Season opener lineup (projected everyday in bold):
- Xavier Edwards (S) (2B)
- Otto Lopez (R) (SS)
- Jonah Bride (R) (DH)
- Jesus Sanchez (L) (LF)
- Conor Norby (R) (3B)
- Griffin Conine (L) (RF)
- Deyvison De Los Santos (R) (1B)
- Liam Hicks (L) (C)
- Derek Hill (R) (CF)
Opening day rotation:
- (Ace) Sandy Alcantara (RHP)
- Eury Perez (RHP)
- Braxton Garrett (LHP)
- Edward Cabrera (LHP)
- Ryan Weathers (LHP)
Opening day bullpen:
- LRP: Cal Quantrill (RHP)
- MRP: Declan Cronin (RHP)
- MRP: Ronny Henriquez (RHP)
- MRP: Andrew Nardi (LHP)
- MRP: george Soriano (RHP)
- SU: Anthony Bender (RHP)
- SU: Jesus Tinoco (RHP)
- CP; Calvin Faucher (RHP)
