The Future of Sports Gaming on the PC

Operation Sports' Chris Sanner has written an article discussing the future of PC sports gaming.

Quote:

"Last week's announcement that Madden NFL 09 will not be coming to the PC is the first of a final set of steps to the death of PC sports gaming."

First Sierra (FPS 99) and now EA.... a true sadness. At least Maximum Football is trying. It lacks polish and graphics but it's customizing is great. Still play MVP 2005 with the help of major mods. Kudos to dedicated modders!

well, Sierra did release a product that forced their hand a bit. the last FPS Football was horrible and among the worst games ever released from a bugs and QA point of view.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out for the PC community. If you look at the MVP 05 folks, they are as strong today as they were when the game was released.

To be fair to Sierra they also had to release the game before December 31 or their contract with the NFL and NFLPA was going to expire. That game had so much potential.

Yeah, it looks like we're going to go into a bit of a dark ages for PC sports gaming. But somebody eventually will fill the void with a non-licensed product. There's still a market for PC sports games and somebody will fill this niche eventually. The PC will always have deep customization and mods on its side.

See I think the PC market is going to shift to something different from the console games. As Chris mentioned, we're more likely to see games like OOTP and World Soccer Manager being developed and not Madden.

Soccer and Golf are still very strong on the PC.

its interesting that those are likely going to be the last two EA PC games when all is said and done. and honestly it really has to do with both being more worldwide titles - while Madden, NBA Live and NHL are really just North American only.
