PS2 vs. PS3 versions of NCAA Football
So I finally found a used PS3 copy of NCAA football and bought it. This is after buying the PS2 version retail on the day of release. After playing probably 10 games on each version, I have to say the PS2 version is head and shoulders better than the next gen version. The game play s 10x more engaging, you actually have control of your guys, you can switch men on defense and actually make a play on the ball, the passing is 10x better on PS2....I could go on and on. Graphics edge obviously goes to the PS3 version but that's literally about it. I heard a rumor that this is the last year for EA football on last gen, is that true?
I can't imagine where this title would be if they just ported over the last gen version and continued to build on it by adding animations, beefing up and smoothing out the graphics, adding sounds, adding better sideline interactions, tweak player interaction (things like this)...after this little experiment I've come to the conclusion that EA REALLY blew it buy rebuilding from the ground up on next gen. They may have a 5 year plan or something that we're not aware that would put them ahead of the curve in the long run but up to this date, they haven't came close to capturing the magic of last gen. |
Re: PS2 vs. PS3 versions of NCAA Football
I think most of us assumed and hoped that when NCAA made the switch to next gen that EA would take the existing engine and just keep improving on it. Unfortunatly EA announced early on that it would be a completely new game so what we are left with right now are the growing pains of what really is an entirely new game.
I think it is safe to say that most people will agree with you that the ps2 versions are far superior to any next gen version at least right now. Hopefully that will change next year and hopefully we won't have to go through this same growing pains process when the next next-gen consoles come out in a few years. |
Re: PS2 vs. PS3 versions of NCAA Football
I'm in a weird frame of mind about the current direction they're going...I see it almost like the 2K's baseball series...I want to like the game, it does some cool things, but the sum total is product that I don't really want to play (for a whole host of reasons). With 2K baseball, based on their engine, I currently could care less if they make another game or not because I have little confidence that it will actually be fun to play. I'm kind of getting that way with football games and the direction they are currently going on next gen. Fun for me is a game that is a realistic representation of the real thing and has intuitive, responsive controls. NCAA football on next gen doesn't really capture either of those things. Nor does the 2K baseball series...last gen football does do those things but from a technical standpoint it can't stand up to next gen graphics...we're in a strange period of video sports game evolution and I think it's evident based on the amount of complaining about EA football games these days.

Re: PS2 vs. PS3 versions of NCAA Football
Sorry but last gen is weak.
The only reason people still play it is because they have accepted all the faults that have been with it for years. The next gen version is far from perfect and still has a long ways to go, but last gen is no better, the flaws are just in different areas. |

If you like arcade type football, then yes last gen will be fun. If you are looking for anything more last gen comes up very short.
