Also how do I trade away high cap players? Or trade anyone for that matter. I put them on the trading block but never recieved offers. I couldnt even trade calvin johnson and hes a great player. Any way to manually perform offers? or does this game not offer it? if it doesnt why not?

Ran into a problem
I was in my third year with the lions went 19-13 first two years so doing pretty good. However I ran into some cap issues in the third year. I had 54 million in cap penalties. So had no cap room. And only had 19 players signed. So not enough to win games. So I simmed hoping to get to end of year and lose the cap penalties but got fired. I was wondering what should I do when I have huge cap problems and cant sign anyone. Any way to keep my job?

Re: Ran into a problem
calvin johnson's contract is probably too large for any team to offer a trade for him. 99% of players with big contracts can not be traded as no one will want them, so your better off cutting them(if the salary exceeds the penalty). and the lions happen to suck(like my raiders) so not a lot of people will be wanted in trads(I could only trade andrew walter in my first season, after putting everyone on the block)
just a hint, but dont do too much in FA, trading, or cutting players. If a player is slightly overpaid(unlike raiola for example) your better off keeping him than cutting him and taking the penalty. The draft is the best way to build a teamComment

Re: Ran into a problem
Wow, I don't know how you manage that big of penalties. You must have cut EVERYONE.
Always look at the penalty before cutting people. If you have a crappy guy costing 5 million against the cap, it doesn't help if he has a 6 million penalty, because it costs you more. Same goes with trades, if you trade a guy with a high penalty, you STILL have to pay him that penalty.
The key when signing players is to get as little signing bonuses as possible. That way you can make cap room if needed at a lower cost, and you have more trade options.
The key is to not have penalties. My rule of thumb is to have at least $15 million in cap room free heading into the draft, and you're usually safe to sign them.
A lot of the high penalty guys aren't tradeable because teams don't want the dead weight of others. Often times, you just have to hold onto dead weight for a while. My 49ers had Michael Lewis, who was my backup safety, making 5 million on the cap and a 10 million penalty. I had NO USE for him, but I had to keep him because cutting him makes things WORSE.
Next time, look at that before you cut people. If the penalty is larger than the cap salary, it hurts you. Even if the penalty and cap salary are about the same, often it's best to keep that guy if he has some use.Comment

Re: Ran into a problem
Sorry, but $54 million in cap penalties is crazy!! You should restart again and think about what your doing when you cutting players and resigning them.
Remember rule 1 of signing players. Try and sign them for as little bonus money as possible.Comment

Re: Ran into a problem
I'll admit it was my fault for about 28 million of penalties..but the other 26 million was not even my fault. I clicked b when the idiot gm kept telling me to cut dead weight and he ended up cutting the players. Like I tagged Roy williams for 7 million and the guy cut him after i hit b when it said cut dead weight roy williams. Any way I can stop the cpu from cutting my players? All I know is he cut 30 of my players all expensive guys too.Comment

Re: Ran into a problem
you cant press B there. Press A, and then go down and select "do not cut". whenever you press B you are delegating the action, which means your GM will do it for youComment

Re: Ran into a problem
Well just got forced to retire. They wouldnt even let me trade high cap players. I tried to not cut anymore players cause of cap issues and then find out I had no choice. So i cut the player and then see a screen pop up that says I have to retire. I mean it wasnt even my fault. Or maybe it was I dunno. Anyways what are some ways to avoid these huge cap penalties and getting forced to retire. I didnt even cut any players till the offseason when the ****in gm forced me to cut some players. This sucks building a good franchise then retiring cause they force you to make mistakes and put you in lose lose situations. Thing that sucks the most is i put so much work into the team and this happens. Another disappointing season but i still had some fun.Comment

Re: Ran into a problem
Do you get penalized for making trades? is that how it works in the real nfl? cause i never cut anyone but made serious trades and noticed my cap room was shrinking even though i was clearing cap space. Is it because we have to pay the bonus that we get penalized? I thought the bonus never went against the cap.Comment

Yes, you can get cap penalties for cutting or trading some players with bonuses, in the trade screen it tells you what their penalties are.Do you get penalized for making trades? is that how it works in the real nfl? cause i never cut anyone but made serious trades and noticed my cap room was shrinking even though i was clearing cap space. Bonus is against the cap. Player A: Cap salary 3.5 M, Bonus Penalty 1.5 M. Cut or trade him, you still have to pay 1.5 M against the cap.
Player B: Cap Salary 3.5 M, Bonus penalty 8.0 M. Cut or trade him, you pay 8.0 million against the cap.Comment
