Curious Idea For NHL 10
I was thinking about ways to improve what I feel is already a game with a solid foundation. I think their could be an option to change the pass and shoot mechanics in NHL to reflect something that Pro Evo does and recently Fifa has copied. They could keep the current mechanics, but add an option to have a passing and shooting meter along with improved puck physics (the physics now are solid, but with room to improve). Maybe this has been mentioned already, but this would improve dump variety, pass accuracy, deflections, goal variety, etc.
This could also seperate the superstars of the game with some kind of improved accuracy tuned to the "hot spot" on each individual players meter. What do you guys think?Tags: None -

Re: Curious Idea For NHL 10
I would just like the option for making hard passes. There are too many soft and slow passes in the game. The trigger should remain for passes, but maybe the speed of the pass should depend on how a hard you press the trigger or how long you hold it down.Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/GMBBrian

Re: Curious Idea For NHL 10
I'd prefer this option then a meter. More of a feel thing just like real life.
Tap the pass trigger for a slow/soft pass, hold it down for a hard/pass.
Might work?
I do kknow alot of the slow soft passes in the game are cause by really tring to make some weird back handed pass in the opposite direction sort of thing. I try to avoid those passes and move my player into a better passing position so he can fire it.Former Bison, Argonaut, TSN and Sportsnet employee.

Re: Curious Idea For NHL 10
This is what I want as well, maybe I'll dig up my post and C&P it here. If the passing system is changed, I would be willing to bet that it's more akin to what each of you describe than a meter system as seen in MVP/2K baseball...Comment

Re: Curious Idea For NHL 10
Here you go, slightly modified from the original:
Does that sound about right?Passing for me is the number one gameplay area I'd like to see rebuilt from the ground up. I really feel what happens on the ice is so very limited by the current model. I'd like to see the following 'open-passing model' implemented:
1. Manual control of pass direction -- This alone would create more of the sloppy play that many would like to see. If you've ever tried to slap-pass in 09, you know that it takes much more skill than a regular pass to find your target. Also, you can make some awesome banked breakout passes by using the manual slap-pass workaround, but you have to have the skills/vision to do it. Manual pass-aim would help to cut down on constant cross-creasing, open up gameplay (who hasn't turned the puck over in your own zone because the puck went to the middle of the ice when you just wanted to pass it up the boards into space?), reward teams who play positional defense and most importantly to me, add an element of skill to the offensive game. At the very least, the automatic assist that sends the puck to the teammate nearest to the direction pushed on the L-stick needs to be eliminated/loosened to the point that aiming your pass is necessary...
2. Manual control of pass power/speed -- I was a big fan of NHL 2004 (after a lot of slider tweaking) due in large part to the great amount of control in the passing game. Not only could you pass the puck where you aimed, but the user could determine the speed of the pass. Want to fire a 100 ft breakout pass? Better hold that button down for a second! Need a soft little touch pass to hit your open teammate across the crease? You'll need a delicate press of the button or the pass will be too hot to handle... If you've ever played a current soccer game, you're familiar with the use of power meters and I'd like to see a similar concept used here. It could be an option to have it appear below the player, but it wouldn't be necessary and I'd prefer that it wasn't visible but more of a 'feel' action. Again, this ups the ante in the skill required to be a dangerous passer...
3. Missed pass receptions -- This would tie in nicely with the first two changes. If a pass is off-target but still in the vicinity of the receiver or too hard, there need to be missed receptions (I'll call them 'fumbles' for the lack of a better term). Fumbled passes would have to be tied to an attribute for it to be implemented properly; I would suggest a new one for 'Hands', but I suppose puck control could be used if necessary. Highly-skilled players are often able to control difficult passes that an ordinary player could never bring in. I remember our coaches at my first ice hockey practice instructing us in the proper way to receive a pass. It is a skill, one that is highly dependent on the context of the play. Receiving a hard pass on your backhand is much more difficult than taking the same pass on the forehand and one of the main reasons why players tend to play on their strong side (ie, LH on LW). Once again, 'fumbled' passes based on location, speed & attributes would greatly increase the feeling of organic gameplay and decrease the at times run & gun feeling of the current model...Comment

Re: Curious Idea For NHL 10
Thats a great idea. And the harder the pass, the harder it is to go tape to tape and keep control, all based on the passing and puck control skills for the players involved.
I also like the option of complete manual passes, ie ProEvo where you can pass to a point on the ice and not directly to the skater.Return of the MackComment

Re: Curious Idea For NHL 10
improved passing would be unbelievable. it's one of the most important part of the game, if not the most important, but it's like an afterthought in the game. if the passing was improved and actually took some skill, the goalies could be tuned down to a more realistic level and the game would be so much more fun.Comment

Re: Curious Idea For NHL 10
with my slider set i've got some pretty good sloppy play...not as sloppy as the real thing obviously, but then again i dont want to play 20 minute periods to get decent goal/shot totals, so im pretty happy there. Manual passing is VERY high up on my list for improvements though.Comment

Re: Curious Idea For NHL 10
Yeah, I guess my original idea was for a meter that determines speed and manual analog left stick control for direction. So I'm in agreement. I would, however, like to see some sort of accuracy meter for shooting to make the difference between Zetterberg and McCarty, etc. even more pronounced. (Although McCarty has had some beautiful goals.)Comment

Re: Curious Idea For NHL 10
yes. in particular the passing power control sounds fantastic. imagine the possibilities. a new passing system would add tremendous re playability ! I also like the idea of it being "feel based" (ie: we don't need a little bar/meter showing the pass power. it will be something learned, over time!)
arent the 360 triggers pressure sensitive anyways? why not make it work with that? you push the trigger down all the way, it fires a laser beam of a pass, you gently push it down, and it does a very light pass.
players do need to fumble passes. if the pass is too hard, it should be hard to accept, obviously this would be affected by the recipients pass receiving ratings..Comment

Re: Curious Idea For NHL 10
true but why would u want a slow soft pass? if its more accurate than it would be good cause passing is way too accurate in all nhl games every once and a while ppl screw upI'd prefer this option then a meter. More of a feel thing just like real life.

Re: Curious Idea For NHL 10
im so happy with the patch. but not totally satisfied. why?
1. goalie cant cover the puck - when there is a loose puck, how come they dont cover it up? likewise that puck that seems "stuck" in his skate no reaction.
2. as you change your lines - it seems the AI (yours) so slow to react or they changed even you're not telling them to change.
3. the change line buttons - seems sluggish to me. i dont know about you guys.
(i have posted this @ impression 360 after patch). i hope this would be answered in 2010.Comment
