Is LeBron Having One Of The Best Individual Seasons Of All Time?

Just was reading this article on ESPN:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/column...PERDiem-090324

...putting LeBron's current campaign at the pace of the 1987-88 season and pushing him back up to 40 minutes produces some extraordinary numbers -- on a per-possession basis, he's actually scoring nearly as much as Jordan did, with far superior ancillary numbers....

Unfortunately for James, it's another area where his numbers take a hit in historical comparisons. A season of 28.6, 7.6 and 7.3 sounds decent. A season of 30.3, 8.1 and 7.7 -- which is what his numbers extrapolate to if he played as many minutes as Jordan did in 1987-88 -- sounds downright amazing. And a season of 32.5, 8.7 and 8.3 -- which is what his numbers extrapolate to at the same pace and the same minutes -- is mind-blowing.
I think some good points are made in this article. LeBron is putting up some great numbers and Cleveland is looking like they could win it all this year. LeBron has improved his game as well, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

So what are your thoughts on LeBron's season?

Why are they always comparing these guys to different era's and being dishonest about it in the process?

Let LeBron establish his own legacy when his career is over, and stop trying to put him on the level of all time greats

As much as I like LeBron they need to stop the madness

I think it's definitely one of the tops of all time not a top 5 but maybe a top 10

Regardless of numbers, the man is having a great season. Who would have seen the Cleveland Cavaliers of all teams ever being this good. A few years ago when they made they finals people were shocked but that team was carried solely by LeBron, this team has an actual team mentality that is not often seen. This is going to be a very interesting post-season

The season becomes much greater when you factor in team success. I'm just not sure how much team success should count when ranking individual seasons.

Let the playoffs occur too and we'll see. Personally, until he wins the championship, then he's just another Barkley, Wilkins, ect.......

I wouldn't compare Barkley to Wilkins. Yeah, they both didn't win a championship, but Barkley led a team to the finals. Wilkins was more of a scoring/dunking machine and that's all.

Re: Is LeBron Having One Of The Best Individual Seasons Of All Time?

Michael Jordan's 1986-87 season all the way through to his 1992-93 were all arguably just as good. That's seven seasons alone right there.

Oscar Robertson's first six pro seasons were also better. He even averaged a triple double for the season in two of those years and came damn close in three more. That's thirteen seasons right there including Jordan's.

Kareem's 1976-77 season is also one of the all time best. He averaged 28 points, 17 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 blocks and 1.5 steals that year. Now we have fourteen seasons.

I'm not even going to mention the seven seasons that Wilt Chamberlain averaged 30+ points and 20+ rebounds either...

To give a simple answer to the question though, I'd have to say no.

The thing about those other player seasons, especially Robertson and Chamberlin, is that the pace was much faster then and teams had several more possessions to increase stats. If you give LeBron the number of possessions that Robertson had, his numbers are better.

What you're saying is true, of course, but it's hard to compare numbers from different eras in sports. Especially baseball.

Yes, especially when guys of a certain era had a little "help".

Looks as if ESPN is pushing Lebron for MVP, like they did for Kobe last year.
