How embarassing - upgraded to a nice HDTV and now... I can't hit!
Yep - title says it all. I got a new 42" HDTV a couple of days ago and since then I'm having a really really hard time hitting in the game. I just seem to have wack timing all of the sudden. I always seem too late on the heat now. My old TV was a 480i 32" CRT. I sat a lot closer to the old TV obviously, but I think the problem is that I'm just not used to high def or something. It's as if I have to re-learn how to hit in the game, and it's already really hard. Heh. I just thought that was sort of a weird phenomenon and wanted to share. Does anyone else have timing issues in HD as opposed to SD?--

Yeah I always played on a big HD screen, when I had to use a small SD screen for a week I couldn't hit and had trouble locating while pitching.Yep - title says it all. I have two HD TV's...one is a 50" Hitachi RPLCD, and the other is a (newer) 40" Samsung Flat LCD.
I can't play MLB '09 on the Samsung because it suffers from what is called 'gaming lag'. This occurs because most of these newer fancy TV's apply some kind of image manipulation before showing the image on screen. This can cause a delay of anywhere from 8ms up to 60ms or more. It's generally accepted that anything over about 30ms will cause problems for video games that involve precise timing (like MLB '09 does).
There are a few things you can do to try to lessen the effect of this:
1) Many TV's these days have a "Gaming Mode", which you should be able to activate in one of the setup menus on the TV. It should be specific to the input that you are using (I'm assuming hdmi). It basically turns off much of that 'image processing' to speed things up. The picture might not be as 'pretty', but you should be able to game better.
2) You can try hooking up the HDMI to port 2 (assuming you have one) and then rename the port to "PC". This should be an option in the TV's 'setup menu' again. On some TV's this also disables image processing because it is assumed that if you are hooking a PC up to the TV (via HDMI) that the PC will do the image processing instead of the TV.
3) Google
There's tons of information out there, but it's quite 'hit and miss' as far as what people have found that works.
I still haven't found the right settings to make mine playable. I can watch movies and play games that don't require precise timing (button mashers), but I certainly can't play MLB '09 on it. My TV has "Game Mode" but for some reason it doesn't seem to make much difference. Fortunately, my Hitachi TV doesn't seem to suffer from any perceptible lag, and I'm happy to keep gaming on that TV.Last edited by spitoon; 03-25-2009, 01:17 AM.Comment

I have a 32 in samsung hdtv and I have no lag. I plan on upgrading to a 42 inch soon, possibly sony. Hopefully there will be no gaming lag.Comment

all lcd's have input lag...it might not affect you but is there....
the higher the size you go the worst the lag will get..because bigger screens means more processing power which causes lag..
that is why lcd's suck for gaming imo
get a plasma...colors and blacks are better and no motion blur and no input lag
lcd's only have higher brightness....but the new plasmas match that and burn in is a thing of the past with plasmasComment

the hd lcd's have input lag issues...if you have a 360 then get a vga cable and no lag happens at all and it looks great
the game mode is the only thing you can do for ps3 unless the game supports 1080p and then you can rename hdmi/avi #2 on your tv to pc and that eliminates the processing and acts just like a vga for the 360
but this is only when the ps3 is set to only run 1080p
if the game is on 720p then you cant get the pc mode from hdmi 2
it will still say pc if you rename it but the processing will be normal which gives off tons of input lag..
input lag sucks and that is why i went with plasma....Comment

I have a Samsung LCD 46" 650 model and game mode is fine for me. If anything, I wish it did lag a little when hitting since I'm still early most of the time! Rock Band 2 works great in game mode as well.Comment

This is true, my Samsung doesn't do 1080p so the 'renaming the port to PC' doesn't work for me.the game mode is the only thing you can do for ps3 unless the game supports 1080p and then you can rename hdmi/avi #2 on your tv to pc and that eliminates the processing and acts just like a vga for the 360

Re: How embarassing - upgraded to a nice HDTV and now... I can't hit!
I appreciate all the feedback but it's not a lag issue - I specifically went plasma to avoid the lag (console gaming was my #1 concern in buying the set - all else was secondary.) Really I don't see any lag at all - everything looks great. I just think it's a lot bigger and takes up my whole field of vision (I have a lazy eye and can only fully focus out of one eye at a time) and that might be distracting my brain the few ms it takes to make good contact on a fastball vs. the slow painful dribblers I've been hitting. I'm just not used to the picture. Perhaps I'm just busy drooling all over the floor over how fantastic everything looks. Also, yes - the PS3 is connected via HDMI and I'm running MLB 09 in the recommended 720p.
My poor RTTS schlub is really slumping after a strong rookie season. I just hope I don't have to send my PS3 down to the SDTV minors in order to have success. I'm confident my feeble brain will figure it out and adjust over time.--

Ohh I thought u had an lcd. But yeah if you have a plasma then you good to go. Give it time and you will get the hang of it. I was always more of an lcd fan but to me the input lag was a killer and I was not going to resort to game mode where I can't control picture settings when I am spending so much on a tv. Plasma has better colors and black levels and no input lag and I don't even use game mode on my pioneer elite plamaComment

Re: How embarassing - upgraded to a nice HDTV and now... I can't hit!
Yeah I was convinced I was going to get an LCD and then I did some research and because of the input lag I went plasma. I'm glad I did, I just need to practice. Just when I thought I was getting better, too - heh.--

Everything everyone said is why I went with a CRT TV...Its just for gaming so I prefer CRT over LCD or Plasma for gaming.Comment

Crt is not better then plasma...the grpahics alone on the plasma kills the crt. And is hard to believe that your hitting skills is the reason you prefer standard tv to high def
Plasmas are perfect for gaming.. better then lcd or crtComment
