LSU looking for more in-state foes...

LSU's athletic department, which could be asked to pay more money to the university amid $34 million of proposed budget cuts in the coming year, also is trying to save money. The cost of guarantees that major football powers pay to mid-level and smaller FCS schools to come to their stadium are going up dramatically. "Some major schools are offering $1 million for some games against the upper division schools," Ausberry said. "We're not going to that level right now." LSU will pay Tulane $850,000 for the Green Wave's game in Tiger Stadium on Oct. 31. Ausberry hopes to pay McNeese and Northwestern State between $350,000 and $400,000, depending on when the games are played. The lower division schools cannot command as much money for a game as the higher division schools, Ausberry said, because the major programs try to play as few of the lower schools as possible. And all the lower division schools want to play the upper division schools. "It's harder to find the upper division schools to play," Ausberry said. LSU also does not mind helping its in-state athletic departments, which are much more vulnerable to the higher education cuts currently under consideration than is LSU's athletic department, which has a self sufficient athletic department that does not receive state funds. "If we're going to pay money to a school, we might as well pay it to an in-state school to help them," LSU athletic director Joe Alleva said.

LSU had been doing pretty well in playing more out of state/region schools lately...especially by SEC standards. Wonder who they go to after the FCS schools and Tulane?

I like that and I'm in favor of Memphis doing the same thing. If you are going to play a buy game (or in the SEC's case, 4 of them), do it with an in-state school.

For years there has been a proposed battle for baton rouge with LSU and Southern but honestly I dont think it would turn out well... The city has this unspoken divide between the two schools and the communities that support them because of some things in the past and while finicially benificial for southern it could cause other problems socially. I am not sure if its the same for schools like FSU and Famu etc but there is always a tension between the fans...

You'd think LSU could get away with paying Tulane a little less than 850 K. Thats a sweet deal for Tulane. They would spend almost none of the 850 K on travel expenses if they rented a couple of yellow dogs for the 90 minute trip to Baton Rouge.

sad but true, i wonder will we ever see the day the two sides of town come together, but holden has been doing a good job of bridging the gap.

While your right about that...im positive UNT will throw in at least 3 games in BR if they come to Denton. I was talking about the future.

well i just got back from the regionals (Geaux Tigers) and the crowds mixed well...ive seen a lot of southen folks talk about how hard it is schedule HOME games...they said they'd settle with a game at BR and making the 10 minute drive.

A program like LSU will not play a program like North Texas on the road.

It is very simuliar to Ohio State feasting on it's in-state rivals early. This way the money stays in state for schools. They still will play out of conference foes, but will get their guns ready in state first - not a bad concept considering that playing an SEC schedule is tougher than teams in any other conference play no matter who they add.

When is the last time LSU played a road game against a team like North Texas?

not in a long time because Burtman would never agree to that. But all Alleva Cares about is money. I hope it doesnt happen, but im not putting it past Alleva to agree to that.

If it's money he cares about, an away game at a place like Texas would bring in a lot more than an away game at UNT.

                              Agreed.

OU was trying to schedule a home and away with LSU. If it is about money, LSU should have agreed to the series, even if it was scheduled for 2018-2019.
