    Contracts

I've had this game since it's release, but haven't played it much until now since I haven't had time. I was hoping you guys could offer me some guidance.

How do incentives work on contracts? Are they counted in addition to the contracts total value, or are they included as part of it? For example, if a deal were worth 10 million with 1 million in incentives, is the total potential value 10 or 11 million? I assume the latter due to the players preference for incentive-laden contracts in the game, but real nfl contracts are usually described in terms of their highest possible value.

Is there a way to specify the length of a contract? I hate finding a sleeper of a late round pick or UDFA only to find that I will have to offer them a large contract in a year or two instead of a more typical 4 year rookie contract period. To this point, when is a player eligible for RFA? Is it after three years?

How many players do you guys actually resign? I'm a bit of a cheap-skate in the game. I've mostly been letting players leave in free agency or relishing my draft picks from restricted free agency. I'm on my third season and I've managed to win a super bowl and go to another with this strategy, but I feel guilty as though I'm abusing the game by having no long-term players other than the ones that began with large contracts. I have Ozzie Jones and may extend him eventually, as well as a few linemen (I have a 89 RT and a 91 potential C currently at an 86), but for the most part these guys are rentals. It doesn't help that my GM is very good and I'm able to find very good replacements in the draft.

Any insight is appreciated, thanks for reading!

    Re: Contracts

As far as incentives go. They can be added to the contract every year they are met. So if you have someone with 3 incentives worth 1 m a piece and they meet them every year for a 5 year contract...you are actually adding 15 m to the term of the contract so I would caution you about using them...at all...unless you are sure they wont be met. I use a blocking FB that may get 1 carry a game so I dont mind giving him an incentive to gain 1000 yards.

The contract length for drafted players is determined by the round they are drafted in. I dont remember all of them...but from Round 3-6 it is for 3 years and round 7 is usually for 2. You cannot change the term of the contract though. It is dictated by the player during re-signing or FA.

Correct about RFA...it is after their 3rd year in the league. You wont see those player coming to resign if it is the last year of their contract normally. They will want a Tender Offer for 1 year and then you can re-sign them the next year...or trade them away.

    Good luck
