BLANKS BIG DAY BOOSTS PADRES TO VICTORY

Kyle Blanks finally broke out of his July slump going 3-4 and belting out 2 HR's to lead the Padres to victory over divisional rivals Colorado Rockies. Picking up the win and ending the three game losing streak was rookie Mat Latos. The win was also Latos first career win. The Padres picked up another run late in the game with a pinch hit RBI single from Outfielder Drew Macias.

HAMELS, POWER TOO MUCH FOR PADRES
SAN DIEGO,CA - The Padres were no match for the San Diego native Cole Hamels. Hamels cruised through 8 innings of work allowing 0 Runs on 6 hits, 2 of which came in the 9th before being pulled for Closer Brad Lidge, who picked up his 15th save on the season. The Phillies offensive contribution came from a solo HR by Raul Ibanez and later a 3 Run shot off the bat of Lead off man Jimmy Rollins. Game 2 is scheduled for 7:05 With Chris Young (2-5, 2.67) taking on the struggling Joe Blanton (3-3, 7.04)

According to the MLB Rumor Mill, teams are scouting Padre players as they continue to downward spiral out of contention. According to sources, the Chicago White Sox, New York Mets and Washington Nationals are interested in ACE RHP Jake Peavy. Adrian Gonzalez is also drawing interest from the Mets, Rockies, and Angels. This isn't uncommon as teams are actively trying to get better and acquire top tier caliber players to enhance their chances of winning the coveted World Series. Other big names rumored are Josh Beckett who is being linked to the White Sox and Astros, Scott Kazmir linked to the same two teams and Carlos Marmol who is being scouted by the Red Sox, Yankees and White Sox. In terms of positional players Lance Berkman may be a Met or Angel soon and teammate Carlos Lee may end up a Cub, Rockie, or Giant.

PADRES SELECT 3 IN FIRST YEAR PLAYER DRAFT

The San Diego Padres Selected 3 Players in the First Annual Player Draft. They tagged 18 yr old 3B Rosario Castro with the 3rd overall pick in the draft. Castro is a 6'2 221 pound Switch Hitting 3B with "A" Potential. They used their second round pick on LHP Darnell Doumit. Doumit has great Strikeout potential according to scouts. Their final selection was used on 18 year old LF Joe Bravo. Mainly selected due to his name, Bravo is a Left handed hitting/throwing Outfielder who can play all OF positions and has "B" potential. Lets see how they pan out in the future.

PADRES FALL IN EXTRAS, LOSING STREAK CONTINUES

The Padres continue to struggle and once again lose. This time on a Mark Reynolds solo shot in extra innings. Chad Gaudin pitched a gem allowing 1 Run on 3 Hits in 7 IP while striking out 9 and walking 0. Mark Reynolds hit his 10th Home Run on the very first pitch in the 10th frame off incoming reliever Mike Adams. The loss was Adams first on the season. Picking up the win was big Right Hander Joe Rauch while Chad Qualls picked up his 5th save on the year. After the game the new Padres management was quoted as saying "This is an embarrassment. I don't even want to watch this product. I am in my first season with this club and big changes are needed and needed quick. No one is untouchable and i need to give this team a face lift." Is a fire sale imminent? Stay tuned as this story continues to develop.

Check back later to see where the newly acquired players have been placed. The Padres must now decide which 5 pitchers to throw out for their starting rotation between Jake Peavy, Chad Gaudin, Kevin Correia, Top Prospect Mat Latos, Sean Gallagher and newly acquired players Sean O'Sullivan and Clay Buccholz. Also for the time being, do they start the clock on newly acquired 1B Lars Anderson or move Kyle Blanks back to his natural position of 1B after he was converted to the OF to get his bat in the lineup as he was blocked by Adrian Gonzalez?
