    Cap Screwed?

Did anybody else enter Cap HELL in their franchise? I did with the raiders in my 3rd off season. I only had one mistake, not realizing the effect of the cap penalty. I was screwed, so i had to restart, I've decided to take a more cautious approach when trading, and signing. I guess my franchise rust has not worn off.

Between Gerard Warren, Javon Walker, and Tommy Kelly your team gets annihilated by the Cap. Asomugha makes a lot of money but at least he's the best of the best. The other 3 are just terrible.

I'm slowly getting there. I have about 10 million in cap room in year 3 but I have five starters who will be free agents at the end of the season, including Matt Forte who is rated a 95 and Tommie Harris who is already making 10 million per year

I was in the same situation, it took me a long time to figure out that I should never sign a HB, WR, or CB past 33 years old, even if it means a smaller contract and a bigger cap hit other wise you could have a 70 ovr 34 year old taking 12 mil off of your cap and a 20 mil penalty if I cut him.

Does anybody else just re-sign people to 7 yr contracts every 2-3 yrs so that they are always making the smallest amount possible? I never let anybody good or at least worth keeping get below 3 yrs on their contract. I always do this and have plenty of cap room.

I was under the impression that if one performed the resign player option on a player that already had a contract that one has to eat the previous contract (as a cap penalty)... am I wrong on this?

If you resign a player who already has a contract the remaining bonus is supposed to stay in place. The rest of the original contract is void. Not sure if it works right in the game or not but that is how it is supposed to be.

the game needs to do a better job of informing us of our cap situation. as far as i know, there is no way to see how much cap space you have beyond the current season. if someone can correct me on this, id greatly appreciate it. i have no idea what my cap penalty is for next season, i can only see what it is for the current season, which does not reflect any of the moves ive made this year. and id like to see how much cap space is left 5 years down the road after i sign a guy to a big long term contract.

well, in past versions of the game the increase in salary cap from year to year was always way to much compared to what it was in real life. has that even gotten fixed yet?

I don't think it shows you that, and I'm curious if it even shows you what cap penalty you'd get if you release, trade a player before you make a move?

This makes sense, and I thought that this is how it works in Madden. I'll have to double-check though.

Interesting Article. On this topic, I have two questions.

                            1. Are all salaries backloaded or can you make them even or even front loaded? I can't figure out how to do anything but backload them and this adds to salary cap issue later.

                            2. When you trade a player, there is a penalty. However this raises two questions:

                            a. What exactly is the penalty? Is it just the bonus for that year or is it the sum of the bonuses for the life of the contract?

                            b. If it is for the life of the contract, does that mean the player will now be owed $0 in bonus by the new team?

                              1. All you can do is backloaded. The only scenario in which backloaded contracts do not exist is if the signing bonus is $0K. Then the amount of money is equal every year.

2a. I tested it out, and it looks to be the sum of the bonus for the life of the contract. I tested it by resigning Santana Moss to a new contract with the Redskins then trading him. I have a massive cap hit compared to when not resigning him because of all that extra bonus money over the life of his contract.

2b. Yea if you trade for a player and he comes to your team his bonus is automatically now at $0K, which means if you decide to then trade him the extra bonus money won't be a factor, and if you release him it won't cost you any money towards cap penalties.
