NBA Live 10 Demo - Controls

I think many people are struggling with certain things (direct passing, backing down, off ball controls) so I wanted to put all those controls in this thread instead of filling up the impressions thread with it.

For people like me who like the more visual ques here are the couple of videos that EA put up prior to the release of the demo:

What the videos don't show is things like how do back down. The developers explained early in the impression thread that you gently move in with the left stick and the player will automatically do a post up.

I, for one, am very confused to the play calling. Certain plays only get activated with certain players have the rock... I think. Also don't completely understand how the quick plays work either. I don't think I am alone in that - especially the people who are playing Live for the first in a long time.

Hopefully we can help each other out and learn the game for the way it was meant to be played.

Beluba on post play:

Post Play:
tap Shot = pumpfake
double tap Shot = up and under
tap Shot, move LS or RS left/right = fake and drive
turbo + RS left/right = drop step
RS left/right = post spin
Shot with neutral LS = hook or post turnaround
Shot with LS away = post fade
LS up prior to dribble = pivot to face up

on defense it's a rock paper scissor game. If you guess the right way with LS when offensive guy makes a move, you increase your chance of a strip or steal. Ratings are factored into the dice roll as well

time Steal or Block when ball handler makes his move or shot to strip or block

also if you're controlling an offball defender, double from the blind side and time your Steal button as you come in. Sometimes you can pop the ball out that way.

Beluba on quick plays.

the RB plays are designed to get your primary scorers to generate some offball motion and create scoring opportunities. They are pretty basic in that they usually involve just 1 or 2 guys, mostly looking for v-cuts, curls, slice cuts, offball screens, and flashes to the hoop or block. It's also a great way to create misdirection when playing other users. And if you couple it with the direct pass receiver control, you can get a lot of open looks.

Beluba on boxing out/rebounding

Don't think of holding Y as a typical boxout button. In fact, don't even use the Y button to box out. Move your player into proper position (ie. find a body and seal him off) and the boxout will kick in automatically. After the ball hits the rim, then hold down Y. If you press it too early (before your player can "find" a rebound), the button will time out and your player will jump and miss. Also, if you release Y at anytime, your player will jump.

So the best thing to do is to seal your guy, wait for the ball to get within a catchable range, and then start holding Y. As soon as your player finds an acceptable rebound animation that gets him to the ball, he'll jump and successfully grab it

As I mentioned in the Impressions thread, tap the block button to contest a shot without leaving your feet.

It's really, really finicky though. Doesn't work as well as I would like.

If this is in, I might just buy Live despite ALL my gripes.

What are the offensive post controls? It feels like post moves are random since we dont have a back down button/ modifier anymore

you slowly creep in with the left stick to initiate a post up and if you want to move to spin move out of it you use the right stick. To take a fadeaway in a certain direction (roll right/left) you use the left stick - i think.

Biggest suggestion I can offer is to make use of the whole range of motion with the LS. Especially in 1-on-1 (off & def) situations.

I'm having a hard time trying to figure out the right stick moves...

So if I understand correctly, when you flick up on the right stick, sometimes you'll get 2 dribbles (example, a cross then a behind the back) but you can chain into another move with the right or left stick before you get that second move correct?

Yes. Turbo+Up or Down on RS also sets you up for more moves...

It'd be nice if the controls were camera specific. That's also gonna take some getting used 2...

(for XBox 360) ... I am so used to having RB as my Direct Pass, and LT as my Back Down/ Post Up. I can't count how many times I have a guy in the post and hit the LT to back down, then X to shoot, but end up kicking it out to a covered Pietrus...so frustrating...I hope the controls are fully customizable because I dont think I cn get used to LT as my Direct Pass- it is just not intuitive to me.

Yeah, I don't care 4 it either but it isn't 2 often that they have fully customizable control schemes in a sports title so I wouldn't hold my breath on that one. Just gonna have 2 adapt.

has anyone been able to get a put back jam? I have boxed out bynum a few times to get a rebound with howard and dunk, but couldn't figure out the put back.
